Fixing a ceiling light without drilling: the method
This article is also available in French: Fixer luminaire plafond sans percer

Reuse the existing anchor point. A threaded rod or a hook already sealed into the slab carries the load without any new drilling: switch off the power, remove the old socket, adapt the base's thread, connect the wires. Beyond a few kilos, or without an anchor point in place, no drill-free fixing is reliable.
How do you fix a ceiling light without drilling?
The fixing relies on what is already on the ceiling. A threaded rod, a sealed hook or a DCL box carries the weight of the light, and the base is screwed or clipped onto it. You add no holes: you use the anchor point left by the previous light.
The model matters as much as the technique. A ceiling lamp with a wide base covers the mark left by the old socket and screws directly onto the rod in place, whereas a small base leaves the drilled hole visible. Measure the diameter of your base before ordering.
- Switch off the power at the circuit breaker before any work
- Check the thread of the existing rod, often M8 or M10
- Weigh the light: a multi-arm model requires a structural anchor
- Degrease the support if you go for an adhesive solution
Reusing the anchor point already in place
A hook sealed into the slab easily carries a light of several kilos, and it costs nothing to reuse. Check the thread, add an adapter if needed, then hang. For a chain-hung light, the full method is detailed in our guide to fixing a chandelier with a hook.
The DCL box already in place
The DCL box is the white square that surrounds the cable outlet. It has a plug and a central rod: the ceiling light plugs into it, then screws onto it, without a drill or a wall plug. Removing the old temporary socket follows a precise procedure, described step by step in our article on the DCL box.
Canopy and cover plate
When the old hole is wider than the new base, a cover plate hides the gap and spreads the load over the surface. It is also the answer to an uneven ceiling. Our article on the ceiling canopy explains which diameters cover which marks.
What is the best fixing without drilling holes?
No solution is the best in absolute terms: everything depends on the weight of the light and the flatness of the support. A structural adhesive holds a light model on a smooth, dry ceiling. A threaded rod or a sealed hook carries the load of a heavy light. Glue alone, never.
Structural adhesive: for a light fitting
High-performance strips adhere to paint, tiles and smooth concrete, provided the surface is clean, dry and degreased
