Black pendant light for the living room: choosing it, hanging it, lighting it
This article is also available in French: Suspension noire salon

Set the hanging height first, choose the shape second. Above a low sideboard, allow 55 to 65 cm between the shade and the top; in a walkway, leave 2.10 m clear from the floor. Then pick the diameter: roughly one third of the width of the furniture it hangs over. The black finish comes last, never first.
Which black pendant light for a living room?
A black pendant light works in a living room if its diameter is roughly one third of the width of the furniture it hangs over and if its socket matches the bulb you want to fit. Across a survey of 212 pendant lights in our catalogue as of 12 October 2026, 48% are black and 58% are made of metal.
Three things decide the result: the hanging height, the shade diameter and the bulb temperature. We go through them one by one in a living room lighting project, from measuring the height to hanging the fixture.
Black brings the line, not the light. In a bright living room it draws the eye to the centre and lets the rest breathe; you still need to light your living room in three layers so the contrast does not become a dark hole in the ceiling.
Black metal pendant light: what the finish changes in the light
Matte black absorbs light and lets the bulb do the work; glossy black bounces it back and lightens the silhouette. At the same diameter, the room does not look the same.
- Metal: 58% of the survey of 212 pendant lights in our catalogue as of 12 October 2026.
- Aluminium: 35% of the same survey, lighter to hang.
- Iron: 24%, heavier, industrial look.
- Glass: 34%, often paired with black metal to diffuse light without glare.
A living room rarely relies on a single point. A black ceiling light for the living room in the background, a floor lamp near the sofa, and the pendant light returns to its role as the focal point.
Black and gold living room pendant light: when two-tone warms the room
Gold placed inside the shade reflects a warmer light than black alone. From the outside, the line stays black: that is what avoids a heavy look.
- Gold inside: extra warmth without changing the bulb.
- Gold outside: keep it to a single point in the living room.
- Black and gold: 48% of the survey are black, 35% are gold.
This pairing keeps coming back in the trending living room pendant lights of recent seasons, often on Tube or Dome shapes.
On a multi-arm model, the black structure carries the volume and the gold dresses the sockets, as on multi-arm black chandeliers.
The choice narrows once you read the product pages by diameter, socket and finish, as in our selection of pendant lights.
How do you set the height of a pendant light?
First measure the most restrictive point: the edge of the table, the back of the sofa or the centre line of a walkway. Then hang the shade 70 or 80 cm above a table top, and leave 2.10 m clear from the floor if people walk underneath.
- Above a table: 70 to 80 cm between the shade and the top.
- Walkway: 2.10 m minimum from the floor to the lowest point.
- Reading corner: 55 to 65 cm above a low sideboard.
- Cord: shorten it before fixing the hook.
Which pendant light above a rectangular table?
A rectangular table calls for a model that is wider than it is tall, or several small ones in a row. A single model sits at one third of the table width; as soon as the table gets longer, two or three pendant lights take over and spread the light.
- Short table: one pendant light, centred.
- Long table: two or three points aligned along the axis.
- Spacing: even, to avoid dark patches.
A dining area open to the living room follows the same logic: two or three aligned points work better than one oversized model. Spacing is detailed in our guide to the dining room pendant light.
How do you shorten a pendant light cord?
Cut with the power off and keep some slack. The electrical cable shortens badly: it is the suspension cable you adjust, while the electrical one stays coiled in the ceiling cup.
- Circuit breaker: switched off, not just the switch.
- Slack: keep 10 cm for repositioning.
- Connection: redone inside the ceiling cup, never in mid-air.
If the assembly looks too tight, better to rethink the fixing point than to pull on the cable: installing a hanging light on the ceiling sets out the steps in order.
What size pendant light should you choose for your living room?
Size is a matter of proportion, not absolute value. Above a piece of furniture, take one third of its width; in an open space, a pendant light 40 to 60 cm in diameter suits a 20 m² living room under a 2.50 m ceiling. The higher the ceiling, the larger the diameter can be.
- Furniture below: diameter equal to one third of its width.
- Central open space: 40 to 60 cm in diameter for 20 m².
- High ceiling: larger diameter, longer cord.
Large black living room pendant light: proportion with the furniture
A large room needs volume, not just a large diameter. A large pendant light is judged by the distance it leaves between itself and the furniture: too low and it weighs the room down; too high and it disappears.
- 180 cm sideboard: a 60 cm diameter model stays in proportion.
- Clear height: never less than 2.10 m below the lowest point.
- Silhouette: slim for a large volume, wider for a small one.
Black living room pendant light: diameter according to volume
The diameter follows the surface seen from the sofa, not the floor area. In an L-shaped living room, two smaller pendant lights work better than one wide one.
- Rectangular living room: one point on the axis.
- L-shaped living room: two points, one per zone.
- Shapes: Tube 32%, Round 26%, Ball 16% and Oval 13% of the survey.
You can browse the shapes by family in our lighting range, from Tube to Dome.
The same rule of proportion applies elsewhere in the home: a bedroom pendant light sits lower and smaller.

Which bulb should you put in a black pendant light?
Aim for 2700 K for warm light and 3000 K if you read or work in the room. Black absorbs part of the output: allow a little more lumens than with a light-coloured shade, and check that the socket accepts a dimmer.
- 2700 K: warm light, evenings, sofa corner.
- 3000 K: more neutral, reading or working.
- Dimmer: useful if both bulb and fixture state they are dimmable.
- Output: increase it slightly under a black shade.
Colour temperature in the living room
A living room can take two temperatures, provided you do not mix them at the same point. A living room used in the evening works very well at 2700 K; a room that doubles as an office needs something a little more neutral.
The number of lumens is calculated from the surface area, not from the style of the pendant light. Our guide to calculating the light needed for a room gives benchmarks by surface area.
LED or E27 socket: read the product page before buying
Black changes nothing about the socket, but it changes what you see of the bulb. An E27 socket leaves the filament visible; an integrated LED source closes the shade.
| Socket | Share of the survey | What it changes |
|---|---|---|
| LED | 44% | Integrated source, no replacement to plan for |
| E27 | 14% | You choose the bulb, visible filament |
| G9 | 13% | Compact socket, small shades |
These shares come from the survey of 212 pendant lights in our catalogue as of 12 October 2026. In the same survey, 55% state a two-year warranty, 41% three years, and 100% carry the CE marking.
A 2700 K bulb with an E27 socket covers the most common need in a living room fitted with a black shade.
