Bedroom spotlights: where to place them and which light to choose

Allow 4 to 6 spotlights for a 12 m² bedroom, placed 50-70 cm from the walls, at 2700 K and dimmable. Two separate circuits, ceiling and headboard, are better than a single central point: one keeps the room flowing, the other lets you read without flooding the space.

A bedroom is designed around uses, not models. That is the logic of a bedroom lighting project: identify the actions of the day, then lower the intensity in the evening without changing the colour of light.

Which spotlight for a bedroom?

A fixed recessed spotlight handles circulation, an adjustable spotlight lights reading or washes the wall behind the headboard. Aim for 2700 K, a flux of 300 to 500 lumens per point and a 36° beam. In a bedroom, IP20 is more than enough.

Recessed spotlight, adjustable spotlight, wall light: what changes in a bedroom

Fixed recessed spotlight Adjustable recessed spotlight Wall light
Where it directs light Downward flux from the ceiling Beam aimed by hand Wall, at reading height
Use in the bedroom Circulation and general lighting Reading and highlighting a wall Reading without lighting the whole room
Suitable temperature 2700 K 2700 K to 3000 K 2700 K
Drills the ceiling Yes, cut-out required Yes, cut-out required No, wall-mounted
Common base GU10 or integrated LED module GU10 E14 or E27
Limit to know Hotspot if spotlights are poorly spaced Glare if badly aimed Depends on a power supply at the wall
  • Flux: 300 to 500 lumens per point for general lighting
  • Angle: 36° for an even wash, 24° for a wall accent
  • Dimmability: check the spec sheet, otherwise the light stays harsh in the evening
  • Ingress protection: IP20 outside wet rooms

Recessed or adjustable spotlight?

Criterion Fixed recessed Adjustable
Use Circulation, general wash Reading, wall accent
Beam 36 to 60° 24 to 36°
Adjustment None 30 to 45° tilt
Discretion Disappears into the ceiling Remains visible, more graphic
Dimming Desirable Essential near the bed

Which colour temperature for a bedroom?

2700 K, without hesitation. It is the warm white that gives skin a natural look and keeps walls calm. A 3000 K still works if the room also serves as an office; beyond that, the atmosphere becomes clinical.

From a survey of 224 references in our catalogue as of 6 October 2026, the bedroom is the room declared on all the spec sheets and 98% are IP20. Bulbs are chosen right after: the guide on which bulb for a bedroom details the bases that handle dimming.

How should spotlights be laid out in a bedroom?

Align the points in two rows parallel to the bed, 50-70 cm from the walls and 40-60 cm from the corners. Space them 80 cm to 1.20 m apart depending on the beam, and keep the same spacing everywhere to avoid dark zones.

How far from the wall should a spotlight be placed?

Between 50 and 70 cm from the wall: close enough to wash the surface, far enough not to create a hotspot above the head. In an attic room, this distance is measured from the low wall, never from the slope.

The full calculation of spacings, including between two rows, is detailed in our article on distance between ceiling spotlights.

How many spotlights on a bedroom ceiling?

One point every 1.5 to 2 m² is enough for circulation. The rule changes with ceiling height and the presence of a canopy bed.

Area Points Spacing between points
Under 10 m² 3 to 4 80 to 90 cm
10 to 14 m² 4 to 6 90 cm to 1.10 m
14 to 20 m² 6 to 8 1.10 to 1.30 m

Point-by-point counting, depending on the shape of the room and the furniture, can be read in our method on how many ceiling spotlights to install.

You now know how many points to place and at what distance: to see real models rather than diagrams, the bedroom lighting at Designix can be browsed by room and by colour.

Your case: which bedroom lighting?

Three questions are enough to decide: the area, the ceiling height and the evening use. The quiz below rebuilds your configuration and indicates the number of points to plan for.

Which bedroom lighting matches your situation?

What is the ideal lighting for a bedroom?

Three layered sources: soft ceiling light for circulation, a reading light per person, a low point for the night. All at 2700 K and on a dimmer, to go from 100% to 10% intensity without the tint shifting.

  • Circulation: 4 to 6 spotlights or a diffusing ceiling light
  • Reading: a wall light or reading light on each side of the bed
  • Ambience: a low point, string lights or a floor lamp

The principles governing evening light, from dusk to waking, are covered in our article on which light for sleeping.

How many lumens for a bedroom?

Allow 100 to 150 lumens per m² for general lighting, and 200 to 300 lumens on a reading point. A 12 m² bedroom is therefore fine with 1,200 to 1,800 lumens in total, spread across several sources.

From the same survey of 224 references as of 6 October 2026, 31% declare dimming and 90% announce a 2-year warranty. How a dimmable spotlight works is worth a look before ordering.

Warm or cool light in the evening?

Warm. 2700 K is the reference tint above a bed; a cool white of 4000 K keeps its place in a kitchen or office, never above a mattress. If the room also serves as a work corner, two circuits are better than an intermediate tint.

What are some lighting ideas for a bedroom?

Three families are enough: a low, wide ceiling light for ambience, one wall light per person for reading, a low point for night-time movement. The combination matters more than the model taken in isolation.

A well-composed bedroom mixes scales: large volume on the ceiling, small format on the wall, low source on the floor. Our selection on bedroom lighting ideas shows these combinations in context.

Lighting the bed without waking the other person

Place the wall light 40-50 cm above the mattress and aim the beam downwards. It is the angle, more than the power, that avoids lighting the other half of the bed.

  • Reading wall light: directed beam, never diffusing upwards
  • Separate control: one switch on each side of the bed
  • Contained flux: 200 to 300 lumens are enough to read
  • Height: aligned with the shoulder, once seated

The fixing reference point and the margin to leave above the mattress are detailed in our article on the height of a bed wall light. Adjustable models can be found in the adult bedroom wall light collection.

Which spotlights for a child's bedroom?

Same rules, lower flux: 2700 K, 200 to 300 lumens per point, and no spotlight in line with the bed. A dimmer reachable from the bed avoids sudden switching on at bedtime.

When the ceiling is low or sloped, a low-height bedroom pendant light is a better replacement for a row of spotlights.

If the room needs an even wash rather than a central point, a diffusing LED ceiling light does the job across the whole surface.

Which mistakes cost dearly before you drill?

Three mistakes come up again and again: too high a flux, a tight beam above the bed, and marking out without checking the position of the joists. Also allow for cable routing and insulation before drilling, otherwise the hole is made for nothing.

Before drilling: the checklist for a successful spotlight plan

  • Divide the bedroom into zones: circulation, reading, dressing
  • Calculate the total useful lumens for the area, not a single point
  • Space the spotlights evenly along the same line
  • Keep spotlights away from the wall above the bed to avoid the hotspot
  • Keep 2700 K in the bed zone, 3000 K maximum elsewhere
  • Check that the module accepts a dimmer if you want to lower the light in the evening
  • Locate cable routing before drilling the ceiling
  • Make sure the ingress protection matches the room: IP20 is enough in a bedroom
  • Flux: 500 lumens per point in general, not 900
  • Tint: constant 2700 K on all points of the same circuit
  • Circuit: plan two lines, ceiling and headboard
  • Marking out: joists, conduits and insulation checked before the drill bit

The order of steps, from marking to connection, is covered step by step in our guide to installing a ceiling spotlight.

Bedroom spotlights: the questions that keep coming up

Which spotlight for a bedroom?
An adjustable spotlight with a narrow beam, at 2700 K, used sparingly: it serves circulation and reading, never general lighting alone. From a survey of 224 references in our catalogue as of 6 October 2026, 98% are IP20, the rating that is enough in a bedroom.
How should spotlights be laid out in a bedroom?
They are aligned by use, not by decorative symmetry: one line for circulation at the foot of the bed, one or two points aimed at the reading wall, and nothing right above the pillow. Space the points evenly along the same line to avoid patches of light.
What is the ideal lighting for a bedroom?
Three sources that do not switch on at the same time: soft ambient lighting in the evening, a directed reading point per person, and nothing that lights the other person's face. The temperature stays at 2700 K, and dimming does the rest.
What are some lighting ideas for a bedroom?
Adjustable bedside wall light, wall-mounted reading light, low-brightness ceiling light, adjustable recessed spotlight, discreet strip behind the headboard. The choice is made on the evening action — reading, getting up, relaxing — not on style alone.
