A wall light, also known as a wall sconce, mounts on the wall and illuminates without taking up floor space: consider an adjustable model above the sofa, two small ones on either side of a bed, or a single one repeated at each level of a staircase. Before ordering, check three things: the bulb base accepted by the fixture, the material if the wall is damp, and the IP rating if the model stays outdoors.

What is a wall light and how does it differ from a wall sconce?

A wall light, or wall sconce, is a fixture attached to the wall that illuminates without taking up floor space. It differs from a floor lamp by its high placement and from a ceiling light by its directed beam. Some models are hardwired, others can be placed without wiring.

Wall lamp or wall light: what are we talking about?

Both terms refer to the same object. Wall lamp, wall fixture, wall sconce: the vocabulary changes with habit, the function remains identical, lighting from a wall. What matters in the room is what the fixture frees up: the floor stays clear, the eye meets a point of light rather than a base, and the light arrives at working height. An adjustable wall light directs light downward onto a work surface, a fixed sconce diffuses it upward or downward.

Hardwired model or wireless wall lamp?

The hardwired model connects to the mains and provides continuous light. The rechargeable wireless wall lamp can be placed without an electrician, removed for charging, and suits a rental or a finished wall. Technically, check above all the mounting, the bulb base and the material. The rest of our Designix lighting catalogue follows the same logic, from floor to wall.

Indoor or outdoor wall light: how to choose?

Indoors, you choose a model based on the mood and the room; outdoors, the IP rating decides everything. A waterproof outdoor wall sconce resists water splashes, while an indoor model is fine in a dry room. If in doubt, rely on the rating stated on the product page.

Indoor wall light: which rooms?

An indoor wall lamp works as accent lighting: above a sofa, on either side of a bed, above a desk. The material is open: metal, glass, wood or fibres. The colour temperature of the bulb does the rest. For a bedroom, look at the floor lamps designed to light a bedroom if you prefer lower light.

Outdoor wall light and waterproof outdoor wall lamp

On a terrace, a facade or near an entrance, the question is no longer style but resistance. A waterproof outdoor wall sconce remains protected from water splashes, provided the stated IP rating is respected. Choose a material that withstands moisture and avoid fragile finishes on a facade exposed to rain.

Where to install a wall light in the home?

The living room, bedroom, staircase, toilet and office are the rooms where the wall fixture advantageously replaces a floor lamp. On a staircase, it lights the steps without cluttering the flight; in the toilet, it frees the floor and stays within reach. Everywhere, the rule is the same: light where you need it, not in the centre of the ceiling.

Living room wall sconce: above the sofa or at the end of the sofa?

Above the sofa, a wide living room wall sconce or two small symmetrical models replace a bulky reading lamp. At the end of the sofa, an adjustable model lights the book and leaves the rest of the room in soft light. To go further, a living room floor lamp completes the ensemble without overloading the wall.

Bedroom wall lamp: mood or reading?

In a bedroom, two uses coexist: soft light for mood and a directed beam for reading in bed. A bedroom wall light is therefore placed preferably on each side of the bed, at shoulder height when seated. The colour temperature of the bulb decides the effect, warmer for the evening.

Staircase wall sconce and original toilet wall sconce

On a staircase, light the step rather than the wall: a fixed model repeated at each level, directed towards the flight, avoids shadow zones. In the toilet, an original toilet wall sconce is enough to transform a small space, placed above the sink. The toilet wall light should be small, soft and non-dazzling. For a narrow toilet, a fine-socket toilet wall sconce remains discreet.

Which wall light for which room
Room What we look for Type of model To check before buying
Living room Accent light that takes no floor space Adjustable fixed wall light or wide sconce Bulb base and compatible bulb
Bedroom Soft light, readable in bed Diffused-light sconce or dimmable model Bulb colour temperature
Staircase Light the steps without cluttering Fixed wall light repeated at each level IP rating and installation height
Toilet and WC Free the floor in a small space Small decorative model Socket and bulb included or not
Office Directed lighting on the work surface Adjustable wall light Arm length and orientation
Outdoor and terrace Withstand the weather Waterproof outdoor wall light IP rating and resistant material

What light for a wall light: power, LED and halogen?

Colour temperature decides the mood: a warm white around 2700 K relaxes, a neutral white around 4000 K remains readable. The useful power depends on the base and the bulb chosen, LED or halogen. Above all, check the socket accepted by the model before buying the bulb.

Halogen or LED wall light: what really changes

For equivalent use, a halogen bulb requires more energy than an LED for comparable perceived brightness, and it heats up more. If the fixture accepts an LED bulb in the same base, you keep the design and only change the source. The LED source models simplify this choice when the source is integrated.

E27, E14, GU10 or integrated LED: how not to get it wrong

The base is the only information that blocks a purchase: a large screw bulb does not fit a small socket. For light that can be adjusted through the evening, a dimmable model paired with a compatible bulb avoids buying twice. Also check the maximum power indicated on the fixture. The dimmable models in the house show the benefit of adjustable intensity.

Bases and bulb compatibility
Base Bulb type Typical use To check
E27 Large screw bulb, LED or halogen Wide sconce, wall fixture Maximum power indicated on the fixture
E14 Small screw bulb Small toilet or hallway model Socket included with the fixture
GU10 Pin bulb Adjustable wall light Bulb mounting direction
Integrated LED Non-replaceable source Slim fixture, no bulb to buy Stated colour temperature
Rechargeable wireless Integrated battery Wall light without wiring, bedroom and rental Battery life and charging method

What style of wall light to choose: bohemian, design, industrial or modern?

Style is read first in the shape then in the material: a design wall sconce plays with clean lines, a bohemian wall sconce focuses on fibres, industrial on exposed metal. Gold, matte black, wood and glass completely change the perception of the same volume. Choose the silhouette before the colour.

Bohemian wall sconce and original wall sconce

A bohemian wall sconce often combines wood, rattan or rope, for a bedroom wall or a reading corner. An original wall sconce depends less on the model than on the installation: two walls at different heights, an offset arm, coloured glass. For this register, the wood materials and glass pieces set the tone.

Modern living room wall sconce and designer wall light

A modern-style living room calls for simple lines and a crisp finish: matte black, white, golden brass. A metal wall sconce works well above a low sideboard, while a design wall sconce takes on a more elaborate shape. The modern lines and design pieces help set the register before buying.

What are the trends for wall sconces in 2026?

Wall sconces follow the trend of simple volumes, gold or black finishes and discreet LED sources. We also see the return of rechargeable wireless models, which avoid running an electrical line, and round or ball shapes that soften a wall. These directions are visible in the current collection, without prediction.

The ball shape is placed in a hallway or bedroom, at low height, for enveloping light. Golden brass and matte black remain the two finishes easiest to match. An adjustable model suits an office better than a fixed sphere.

How to install and maintain a wall light?

Installation comes down to three steps: mark the position, drill the mounting, connect or place the module. A rechargeable wireless model is removed for charging without an electrician. For maintenance, a soft cloth is enough; avoid water on electrical parts and unplug before cleaning.

How to install a wall sconce without wiring?

A wireless wall lamp or a rechargeable wireless wall lamp is fixed like a shelf: two anchor points suited to the surface, then the module clips or screws onto the backplate. No chasing, no connection. For this type of installation, the models designed for the adult bedroom often avoid an extra socket. The surface matters: plasterboard, concrete and brick do not require the same plug.

How to clean a wall fixture without damaging it?

Dust first with a dry cloth, then wipe non-electrical parts with a soft slightly damp cloth. On metal finishes, an abrasive product leaves marks; metal finishes are fine with a microfibre cloth. Avoid water on the socket, the LED block and the connections.

How to match a wall light with the rest of your lighting?

Pair the wall light with a floor lamp to light high and low, or with a pendant to bring light down. The simplest is to keep the same finish family and distribute the sources rather than multiplying them in the same place. Three well-placed sources are better than six in the same spot.

Pairing a wall fixture with a floor lamp

The wall lights high, the floor lights the reading corner: floor lamps complete a wall without replacing it. If you are redoing an entire living area, also look at the floor lamp section, whose finishes can echo those of the wall fixture. Keep a single colour temperature from one fixture to another, otherwise the difference shows.

Choosing and ordering your wall sconce

The right site is the one that displays the full technical sheet: dimensions, material, base, IP rating and compatible bulb. An industrial spirit or a contemporary style is chosen from a photo, but validated on the sheet. At Designix, payment is secure, delivery is tracked, returns are possible and customer service responds before and after purchase. For a controlled budget, first compare bulb compatibility, that is what avoids buying twice.

Frequently asked questions about the wall light

Which wall sconce to choose for a living room?

In a living room, we look for accent light that does not take the place of a floor lamp: an adjustable model above the sofa, or two small wall lights on either side. Material and finish matter as much as size, since the fixture remains visible at all times.

How to get a powerful LED wall sconce?

Power comes from the bulb and the base accepted by the fixture, not from the model name. Choose a socket compatible with an LED bulb, keep a neutral white for a work room, and check the maximum power indicated on the sheet before buying.

How to make a wall sconce original?

Originality comes from shape and light play: a sphere, an offset arm, coloured glass or textured metal are enough. You can also offset the installation, for example two walls at different heights, rather than looking for a spectacular model that will overpower the room.

Can you install a waterproof outdoor wall sconce?

Yes, provided you check the IP rating stated on the sheet and the material of the fixture. A waterproof outdoor model is placed on a facade, under an awning or near an entrance, and remains protected from water splashes; an indoor model is not suitable in a damp area.

Which wall sconce for a staircase?

On a staircase, light the step rather than the wall: a fixed model, repeated at each level and directed towards the flight, avoids shadow zones. Check the installation height so it does not catch the passage and the IP rating if the staircase leads outside.

How to light a toilet with a wall sconce?

In a toilet, free the floor with a small decorative model, often with a fine socket, placed above the sink or opposite the bowl. An original toilet wall sconce is chosen for the mood it gives in a small space, with soft, non-dazzling light.

Does a halogen wall light consume more than an LED model?

For equivalent use, a halogen bulb requires more energy than an LED for the same perceived brightness, and it heats up more. If the wall fixture accepts an LED bulb in the same base, you can keep the original design and only change the source.

Our advice for choosing
