A solar security light with motion sensor installs without wiring: the photovoltaic panel recharges the battery during the day, the passive infrared sensor switches on the LEDs when someone passes at night. Allow for a wall mounting near a door or a stake at the edge of a path, with the panel facing an open patch of sky.

How does a solar security light with motion sensor work?

The photovoltaic panel recharges the battery during the day. At nightfall, the passive infrared sensor monitors the area: as soon as a movement crosses its field, it switches on the LEDs for a few minutes, then turns them off. No cable, no mains supply, no work on the electrical panel.

Outdoor solar security light with motion sensor: what is hidden inside the housing

The housing brings together four parts: the photovoltaic panel, a rechargeable battery, the board that manages charging and the timer, then the LEDs behind their diffuser. The casing is often ABS for stake models, aluminium or stainless steel for wall floodlights, with a seal that protects against rain. The passive infrared sensor, the small domed lens visible under the LEDs, is the only component that triggers the light.

Why the sensor does not react like a simple twilight cell

A twilight cell switches on from evening to morning, regardless of presence. The infrared sensor, on the other hand, waits for movement: the lamp stays off as long as nobody passes, which saves the battery and avoids lighting an empty facade all night. This difference is what makes solar viable on a rarely used entrance. To compare with wired lighting, browse the full lighting collection and outdoor solar spotlights.

What kind of light does a solar security light with motion sensor give in the evening?

The light depends on the LED power, the colour temperature and the selected mode. A warm white tone lights without glare near a door, a cooler white gives a sharper light on a facade. Many models combine a low continuous night light and a switch to full power on detection.

Colour temperature is read in kelvins. Around 2700 to 3000 K, you get a warm white, close to the filament bulb, restful near a terrace. Around 4000 K, the white is neutral. Beyond 5000 K, the rendering leans towards cool white, sharper, appreciated on a gate or a shed that you want to see clearly. On a stone house or wood cladding, warm white blends better; on a white facade and a metal gate, neutral works without harsh contrast.

The night-light mode changes the use: the lamp stays dimly lit and ramps up in power on passage. It is comfortable for a path, more demanding for the battery. A range of black colour finishes disappears on a dark wall, while the white colour models blend into a light render.

Where to install an outdoor solar security light with motion sensor?

A solar security light with motion sensor is placed where someone passes without looking for the switch: facade wall near a door, gable above a path, stake at the edge of a bed, under a pergola. The panel must see the sky for several hours a day and stay out of the shade of a tree or an awning.

Choosing your solar security light according to the area to light
Location Suitable light type Mounting What to check
Facade and front door Floodlight or wall light Wall-mounted, on the supplied bracket Protection rating and panel orientation
Path and garden Stake spotlight to plant Stake in the ground Housing height and detection range
Terrace and pergola Wall light or adjustable floodlight Wall or under beam Beam angle and light tone
Gate and garage Wall floodlight Wall-mounted, high up Detection range and battery capacity

At what height should a solar floodlight be placed on a facade?

Generally, a wall floodlight is placed between two and three metres, high enough to cover the path without blinding the person arriving, and low enough to remain accessible for adjustment. A stake spotlight is planted lower, around 40 to 60 cm, to mark a path. The useful rule: the beam should fall on the passage area, not in the eyes of the person ringing the bell.

How to orient the panel so it recharges enough?

The panel faces south when possible, with a tilt that lets rain and dust slide off. It must stay clear for several hours a day: the shade of a tree, a roof overhang or a neighbouring wall is enough to halve the recharge. If the wall is poorly exposed, prefer a model with a panel separated by a cable, or a stake spotlight that can be moved. See the outdoor LED solar spotlights and the metal spotlights for an exposed facade.

How to choose a powerful solar security light with motion sensor?

A powerful solar security light is recognised by its LEDs, the range of its sensor and the capacity of its battery, not by the word displayed on the sheet. Look for the outdoor protection rating, the detection angle, the adjustable timer and the panel orientation. A model with too little battery power lights strongly then fades very quickly.

The criteria that really change the lighting

The IP protection rating counts above all: an IP44 withstands light rain, an IP65 resists jets and dust, which suits an exposed facade. Then come the detection angle, often between 90 and 180 degrees, and the range, which goes from a few metres to about ten depending on the model. The adjustable timer avoids lighting a path for five minutes for a cat. The battery capacity decides how it holds up over several grey days.

Pitfalls to avoid before ordering

A tiny panel on a housing advertised as very bright is a bad sign: it will not be able to recharge what it consumes. Also beware of a sensor facing a nearby wall, which will never see the area to cover. Finally, a housing glued without screws or plugs will not hold in the first gust of wind. For a beam that can be adjusted, look at the adjustable LED spotlights and the modern spotlights, and for indoors, the dimmable spotlights.

What is the difference between a motion sensor and a presence sensor?

The infrared motion sensor reacts to the heat of a moving body. The presence sensor, often wave-based, perceives finer variations, including when you barely move. Outdoors, on a facade or a path, motion is enough; presence is mainly used in rooms where you stay seated or still.

Motion sensor and presence sensor: what are the differences?
Criterion Infrared motion sensor Presence sensor
What it perceives The heat of a moving body Finer variations, even without marked movement
Adjustment Sensitivity and timer Finer range and timer
Typical use Facade, path, entrance Room where you stay seated, covered passage
Weak point Does not see a still person Sometimes triggers without real passage

On an outdoor passage, a poorly set wave sensor switches on through a window or at the movement of a curtain, and drains the battery for no reason. Infrared remains the common choice for outdoor solar spotlights. Indoors, a presence sensor is justified in a corridor crossed with arms full, as offered by the corridor spotlights.

Why does my motion sensor switch on in broad daylight or stay on?

Three causes come up repeatedly: a timer set too long, a sensitivity too high that catches a tree or a car, a dirty lens or a panel left in the shade. Also check the day and night setting of the sensor and the battery charge level before concluding there is a fault.

Why does my motion sensor switch on in broad daylight?

The mode selector is often in the day and night position, which switches on at the slightest variation even in sunshine. Otherwise, the twilight cell is masked by a roof overhang or by dirt, and the housing thinks night has fallen. Clean the panel, set the mode back to night only, then observe a full cycle at dusk.

Why does my lamp with sensor stay on permanently?

The timer pushed to maximum keeps the lamp on long after the passage. A sensitivity too high continuously catches a branch, a shutter or a passing car. A test or forced manual mode produces the same effect. Reduce the range and the timer, clean the sensor lens, then test again. A model with refined design is not exempt from these settings: they are on the housing, not in the shape.

Standalone solar spotlight or wired recessed spotlight: which solution for which room?

A solar spotlight suits outdoors, on a facade without a power supply. In a kitchen, a living room or a corridor, the light comes from a recessed spotlight connected to the mains, therefore more stable and set in the ceiling. The two complement each other: solar for outdoor circulation, recessed for living rooms.

How to arrange spotlights in the ceiling?

The points are distributed regularly in relation to the surface and the usage areas, avoiding lighting a wall instead of the worktop. Better to have few well-placed points than many that cross each other. The spacing is calculated according to the ceiling height and the beam angle. For a connection, the spotlights are wired in parallel on the same circuit, so that switching off one does not cut the others; series wiring concerns strips, not this type of light point.

How many spotlights in a kitchen?

The number depends on the surface, the ceiling height and the position of the worktop, not on a single rule. One point is placed above the work areas, then completed for ambience. An adjustable recessed spotlight allows the beam to be adjusted onto the worktop. Also allow a point above the sink and another near the hob, based on the recessed spotlights for kitchen and the LED spotlights for kitchen.

In the living room, the same logic applies with more spaced points and a softer light: see the LED spotlights for living room and the recessed spotlights for living room. A dimmer makes the evening more flexible, as on the dimmable LED spotlights.

How to maintain a solar spotlight and keep autonomy all year round?

A damp cloth on the panel and on the sensor lens is enough several times a year: dust, dead leaves and droppings cause most of the recharge to be lost. In winter, keep the panel clear of snow and check that the bracket has not moved.

Also check the screws after a gust of wind and the panel orientation when the season changes, when a tree fills with leaves. If the lighting weakens while the panel is clean, the battery is reaching the end of its cycle: this is common after several winters spent outdoors. The rest of the catalogue can be consulted in all our light fittings, and the standalone models in outdoor LED solar spotlights.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my solar lamp switch on during the day and not at night?

Most often, the day and night setting has been activated, or the twilight cell is masked. Dirt on the panel or a battery that no longer recharges produces the same effect. Check the mode, clean the panel, then observe the behaviour at dusk before blaming the device.

Why does my motion sensor not switch off?

The timer is probably set to maximum, or the sensitivity continuously catches an element of the surroundings: branches, a moving shutter, a passing car. A dirty lens or a forced manual mode also switch on continuously. Reduce the timer and the range, clean the lens, then try again.

How to set a motion sensor so it switches on day and night?

Look for the mode selector on the housing: it generally offers a night-only mode, a day and night mode, sometimes a test mode. The day and night mode also switches on in broad daylight, which drains the battery. For everyday outdoor use, keep the night-only mode.

What is the disadvantage of solar lamps?

Autonomy depends on the sun: in winter or after several grey days, the battery recharges less and the lighting weakens. The power remains more modest than on a floodlight connected to the mains, and the light is directional. Cleaning the panel and its orientation therefore count a great deal.

Can a solar spotlight be placed under a pergola or an awning?

Yes for the housing, provided the panel is moved to where it sees the sky: under a solid roof, the recharge will be too low. Then choose a model with a panel separated by a cable, or orient the floodlight towards the opening. Without direct sunlight for several hours a day, the autonomy will not keep up.

Our advice for choosing
