A PIR LED strip light switches on by itself as soon as movement is detected, then switches off after a set delay. In a garage, cellar or hallway, it saves you hunting for the switch with your hands full and only lights for as long as needed.

What kind of light does a PIR LED strip light give?

The light is linear, spread along the whole length of the tube, and lights a walking strip rather than a single point. It comes on as you pass, without any gesture, then switches off after the delay. The result stays functional and readable, with no shadow along the wall, which matters on a staircase or in a utility room.

PIR LED strip light: what comes on, and when

It triggers on movement, not by hand. You walk in, the light is already there; you walk out, it switches off by itself after the delay. This automation changes how a service room is used: no more back and forth to the switch with a box in your arms. For colour, a neutral white around 4000 K suits a garage well, while a cooler white around 6000 K gives a more contrasted look in a workshop. These are general guidelines, to be checked against the chosen model.

PIR LED tube light or batten: the same function

The tube is the light source, the batten is the support that powers and holds it. A PIR LED batten brings both together in a ready-to-fix unit with an integrated sensor: fitting is simpler, replacement is different. The light output stays the same from one format to the other. To compare the families, browse all the light fittings.

Where should a PIR LED strip light be installed?

Install it in a garage, a cellar, a hallway, a laundry room or a workshop, never in a living room that is occupied continuously. The room should be a transit area: an entrance, a staircase, a utility room. Automatic switching is useful when your hands are full, not when you are sitting in the room.

PIR LED garage light: the right reflexes

Place the unit along the line of movement, on the ceiling, and aim the sensor towards the access door. A sensor turned towards the outside or the street triggers for passers-by and wears out the function. A PIR LED garage light is especially justified when you come in with your arms full of shopping or tools.

Cellar, hallway, laundry room: the rooms where your hands are full

In a cellar, the goal is to make the stairs and storage visible without leaving the light on behind you. Same logic in a hallway or stairwell: your foot lands on a step that is already lit. In a laundry room and workshop, the light falls on the worktop, basket or drill in hand. Find what you need to light a hallway or a garage.

Room What the light should do Suitable strip type Point to watch
Garage Light the line of movement as you pass Tube or batten with sensor, fixed to the ceiling Aim the sensor towards the door, not towards the outside
Cellar and basement Make the stairs and storage visible PIR strip light, ceiling mounted Check the clear height above the shelves
Hallway and stairwell Switch on before your foot lands Long format along the hallway axis Avoid a sensor swept by nearby traffic
Laundry room and workshop Light for busy hands Batten with sensor above the worktop Keep the sensor field clear of hanging objects
Sheltered outdoor area Light an entrance without leaving it on PIR strip light under a canopy Choose a protection rating suited to humidity

120 cm PIR LED strip light: which format and fixing should you choose?

Choose the length according to the actual space between the two fixing points and the direction of movement: a 120 cm model suits long, narrow rooms, where the light runs along the wall or ceiling. Surface-mounted or suspended installation depends on the clear height and access to the sensor.

PIR LED batten: the surface-mounted version

A batten is screwed onto a load-bearing surface, ceiling or wall, after connection to the power supply. Before buying, check that the power supply unit is integrated and that the sensor remains accessible once the unit is in place: a sensor pressed against a beam loses part of its field.

Length, footprint and mounting height

Measure the available length and the clear space around the unit before ordering. A 120 cm PIR LED strip light lights an elongated walking area, not a very wide room on its own. Allow room for the sensor, with no hanging object in front of it. For a wide room, two short units are better than one long one badly aimed. Once this size choice is made, compare the options in our range of light fittings.

How does the motion sensor of a PIR LED strip light work?

The sensor, usually passive infrared, detects the movement of a heat source within its field. It switches the strip on, then a delay keeps the light on before it goes out. Range, angle and hold time are set on the unit or fixed at the factory: check this before installation.

PIR strip light: range, angle and settings

A passive infrared sensor works on moving heat: it does not pass through a partition, a window or a cardboard box. Hence the importance of aiming. Some models offer sensitivity and range settings, others do not. Also worth noting: motion detection switches on as you pass, presence detection keeps the light on as long as a person stays in the area, even motionless. These are not the same function.

Delay: how long does the light stay on?

The delay should cover the time actually spent in the room: the time to climb a staircase, put down a basket, put away a tool. Too short, the light goes out mid-gesture and comes back on at the next movement, producing an unpleasant flicker. Too long, it lights an empty room. Adjust after installation, in real conditions, not from the instructions alone. Other models are presented in the full light fitting collection.

PIR LED strip light or LED ceiling light: which fitting for which room?

A PIR strip light lights a transit area, lengthwise and automatically. An LED ceiling light lights a room from its centre, continuously, by switch. Living rooms and kitchens call for a ceiling light or a chandelier; garages, cellars and hallways call for a PIR strip light.

Powerful LED ceiling light, living room LED ceiling light: the light of a living space

In a living room, you want a central light that stays on while you read or entertain, controlled by a switch. A powerful LED ceiling light meets this better than a linear strip, whose grazing light does not structure the room. The decisive criterion remains the shape of the room and the position of the central ceiling point.

LED ceiling lighting for a hallway or a modern kitchen: the format criterion

In a modern kitchen, the light should fall on the worktops: a modern kitchen LED ceiling light, or a batten under the upper cabinet, is more appropriate than a transit strip on the ceiling. In a hallway, the opposite: a long format along the axis guides the eye and lights the whole length. To place each family, see choosing a light fitting suited to each room.

Light fitting Type of light Common use Integrated detection
PIR LED strip light Linear, spread along the length Garage, cellar, hallway, laundry room Yes, automatic switching
LED batten Linear, under a cabinet or canopy Kitchen, workshop, sheltered outdoor area Depending on the model
LED ceiling light Diffuses from the centre of the room Living room, kitchen, bedroom, entrance Rarely
LED chandelier Central and decorative Living room, dining room No
LED wall light Aimed upwards or downwards Hallway, entrance, accent wall Depending on the model
Cuttable LED strip Continuous outlining Niche, cabinet, skirting board No

How do you install and maintain a PIR LED strip light?

Cut the power, fix the support onto a load-bearing surface, connect the unit, aim the sensor towards the transit area, then adjust the delay after installation. Maintenance is limited to the diffuser and the sensor lens, dusted with a soft cloth.

Fixing, power supply and sensor adjustment

Fixing should be into solid material, never into hollow plasterboard alone. Once the unit is in place, aim the sensor towards the door or the walking line, then test by walking normally: if the light comes on from the neighbouring hallway, reduce the range or turn the sensor. A unit intended for sheltered outdoor use requires a protection rating suited to humidity, around IP44 for a canopy, IP65 for a very damp room.

Cleaning the diffuser and checking the sensor

A soft cloth is enough on the diffuser, without abrasive products. The sensor lens should also be dusted: a film of dust or a spider web in front of the detector is enough to create phantom switch-ons or delay triggering. Check this once a year, along with tightening the screws. Other models to compare are shown in Designix light fittings.

Living room LED chandelier, powerful LED wall light, cuttable LED strip: when should you move away from a PIR strip light?

A PIR strip light lights for action, not for decoration. In a living room, an LED chandelier or a wall light brings a chosen, directed light; a cuttable LED strip is cut at the marked points to outline a niche or a cabinet. Each family meets a distinct intention.

Living room LED wall light: lighting a wall without a ceiling light

Fixed high up, the wall light throws light upwards or downwards and lights a passage or an accent wall without occupying the ceiling. In an entrance or a hallway, a powerful LED wall light replaces a strip when the surface is short and the wall wide. The mounting height is set by eye level, not at random.

Cuttable LED strip: how does it work

The strip has regular cutting marks. Cut only at these marks, otherwise a segment stops working, then connect the end to a connector or a suitable power supply. Cuttable does not mean cuttable anywhere. See the complements in the Designix light fitting catalogue.

Living room LED chandelier: chosen light rather than imposed light

A living room LED chandelier brings a central light that is part of the layout and stays on while the room is in use. It does not replace a service strip light and does not have to. Two logics coexist in a home: ambient lighting, chosen, and transit lighting, automatic. To combine both, the home light fitting universe gives the overall view.

Secure payment, tracked delivery, returns and Designix customer service: you order with peace of mind, and the team answers before and after purchase. Take the time to measure the available length and the sensor orientation, these are the two points that decide the final comfort. To go further, see the available light fittings.

Frequently asked questions about the PIR LED strip light

What is the difference between a PIR strip light and a PIR LED batten?

The strip refers to the light tube itself; the batten is the support that holds and powers it. A PIR LED batten brings both together in a ready-to-fix unit with an integrated sensor. The light result is the same, installation and replacement differ.

How does a PIR LED tube light work?

The sensor detects movement in its field, switches the tube on, then keeps it on for a set time before switching off. Without new movement, the light goes out. The tube then lights like a standard LED strip, with a linear light spread along its whole length.

Is a 120 cm PIR LED strip light enough for a garage?

It depends on the surface and mounting height. A 120 cm format lights an elongated walking area, not a very wide whole garage. Measure the available length between fixings and check the sensor range before choosing the strip length.

Cuttable LED strip: how does it work?

The strip has regular cutting marks: cut only at these marks, otherwise a segment stops working. Then connect the end to a connector or a suitable power supply. Cuttable does not mean cuttable anywhere, the marks must be respected. To choose between families, see the home lighting solutions.

Powerful LED wall light: what is it for?

The LED wall light is fixed high on a wall and throws light downwards or upwards. It lights a passage, an entrance or a wall without occupying the ceiling. Its output is chosen according to the surface to be lit, not according to the size of the wall light.

Our advice for choosing
