Plan one post light every two to three metres along a path, with downward light to mark the way and a halo to illuminate around the post. Outdoor LED post lights brighten the ground without glare and are chosen first by post height, then by material and IP rating according to exposure to water.
What is an outdoor LED post light?
An outdoor LED post light is a low fixture, set on the ground or on a low wall, that shines downwards or spreads a sideways halo. It marks a path, highlights a border or lights a step without glare, with lower consumption than a halogen source.
Outdoor LED post light: low light, not a floodlight
In the evening, the line of light on the ground changes everything: the path reads clearly, steps stand out, plants detach from the wall. The LED source stays discreet, the post is low and the beam works close to the ground. To find this luminous writing in other formats, browse the LED post lights, then the post lights with refined design when the fixture also has to count during the day.
Garden electrical post or lighting post: do not confuse them
A garden electrical post distributes power: sockets, connections, sometimes a cable reel. A lighting post only lights. The two are often close together in a garden, but one is chosen on amperage and the other on light. Confusing them wastes time, both in the shop and at installation.
Where to install outdoor LED post lights in the garden?
Post lights are placed along a path, every two to three metres, and around a terrace to mark the boundaries. The more the area is exposed to rain, watering jets or sea spray, the higher the IP rating must be.
Garden LED post lights: marking a path without glare
On a path, regularity matters more than quantity. Consistent spacing gives a clear reading of the route and avoids dark zones. In a bend or in front of a step, tighten the spacing. Garden post lights cover these marking needs; for a long plot, also look at what can light a water-resistant garden along its whole length.
Post light for terrace, entrance and poolside
On a terrace, the post light marks the corners and extends the use of the space after sunset. Near the door, a taller post light signals the arrival. At the edge of a pool or under automatic watering, models designed for the terrace can be installed without fear of splashes. For a complete facade, complete the scheme with the Designix lighting range.
Which height and which light distribution should you choose for an outdoor post light?
Height is chosen according to the effect: a low post light illuminates the ground, a tall post light marks an entrance or a pillar. Light distribution matters just as much: downward to mark the way, as a halo to light around the post, or double to combine both depending on the moment.
Which height for a garden post light?
Around 30 to 40 cm, the light stays on the ground and does not disturb the eye. Between 40 and 60 cm, the post light illuminates more widely and suits a terrace. Around 60 to 80 cm, it becomes a vertical landmark that signals an entrance. On the same path, keeping the same height gives a readable rhythm.
Downward light, halo or double emission: which effect?
Downward, the beam draws a clean pool of light: ideal for walkways. As a halo, the light comes out of the sides of the post and bathes nearby plants. Double emission combines both and adapts to evenings when you want more presence. Compare the effects in all post lights.
How do you read the specifications of an outdoor LED post light?
A post light is read first by its socket or integrated source, its wattage, its IP rating and the material of its post. The socket determines how the lamp is replaced: integrated LED module on slim models, replaceable socket on others.
| Area to light | Installation height | Suitable distribution | Target IP rating | What it brings |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Garden path | Low, 30 to 40 cm | Downward | IP44 to IP65 | Marking without glare |
| Long or winding path | Low to medium, 40 to 60 cm | Downward | IP44 to IP65 | Regular markers every 2 to 3 m |
| Terrace | Medium, 40 to 60 cm | Halo or double | IP44 to IP65 | Atmosphere and zone boundaries |
| Entrance, gate, pillar | High, 60 to 80 cm | Downward or double | IP65 | Marks the arrival and lights the passage |
| Poolside, watered area | Low | Downward | IP65 or higher | Resists water splashes |
| Bed and border | Low | Halo | IP65 | Accent lighting on plants |
Socket, integrated LED module and replaceable source
A GU10 or E27 socket lets you change the lamp later and adjust the colour temperature. An integrated LED module offers a slimmer post and even light, with no visible bulb. Both solutions are valid: the first can be repaired, the second is less noticeable. See the post lights with LED source.
Watts, colour temperature: trust consistent values
Wattage remains the most reliable figure on a product sheet. If a stated lumen output seems inconsistent with the wattage, go by the watts and ignore the rest. For atmosphere, a warm light around 2700 to 3000 K warms a facade, while a more neutral white around 4000 K suits walkways.
What is the best outdoor lighting for a garden?
For a garden, the best outdoor lighting combines several families: post lights for marking and walkways, a wall light near the door, a floodlight or recessed spotlight for facades and trees. A sensor adds light on demand on the passages.
Outdoor LED post lights, wall lights, floodlights: which use for what?
The post light illuminates the ground and gives rhythm to a path. The wall light illuminates a door or a volume, at height. The floodlight covers a wide, adjustable area, the tree or the gable. The recessed spotlight grazes a step or a wall. These families do not compete, they share the ground, as shown in the collection of outdoor post lights.
Outdoor post light with motion sensor: useful or unnecessary?
On a rarely used passage, one side of a house or a service entrance, the sensor avoids lighting continuously. On a path or terrace used every evening, a standard switch is enough. Post lights with motion sensor complete an existing installation without replacing it.
Outdoor LED post light: which IP rating should you choose?
The IP rating indicates resistance to dust and water. The first digit concerns solids, the second water. Outdoors, a post light exposed to rain and watering should be chosen with a high rating; under a canopy, a more modest rating may be enough.
| Rating | Protection against dust | Protection against water | Where it is suitable |
|---|---|---|---|
| IP44 | Solids over 1 mm | Water splashes | Under a canopy, covered terrace |
| IP54 | Limited amount of dust | Water splashes | Sheltered but damp location |
| IP65 | Dust-tight | Water jets | Garden, path, open terrace |
| IP66 | Dust-tight | Heavy rain, powerful jets | Highly exposed area, seaside |
| IP67 | Dust-tight | Temporary immersion | Low point, often waterlogged ground |
IP44, IP65, IP67: what each digit means
The first digit rates protection against solid bodies, the second against water. IP44 resists splashes, IP65 jets, IP67 brief immersion. Between two levels, the difference is not cosmetic: it decides the lifespan of the fixture in waterlogged ground.
Seaside, automatic watering, waterlogged ground: go one step higher
On a coastal facade, a bed watered every night or a low point in the plot, take the rating above what standard use dictates. Waterproof post lights and the selection of IP65 post lights cover these situations; for a very exposed plot, aim even higher.
How do you install and maintain an outdoor LED post light?
A post light is fixed to the ground or to a base plate, on a power supply designed for outdoor use and protected. The cable runs in a conduit, connections stay in a waterproof box, and maintenance is limited to regular cleaning of the post and diffuser to keep the same light.
Wiring, power supply and ground installation
Mark the locations before digging, then bring the power supply in a conduit. The connection is made in a waterproof box, never in the open air. The post light is then screwed onto its base plate or onto a low wall, perfectly upright: a leaning post light deflects the beam and is noticeable from far away.
Cleaning and maintenance of an outdoor post light
A dirty diffuser loses light long before the source dims. A soft cloth and a non-abrasive product are enough a few times a year. Check the fixings and the condition of the connections at the same time. Lighting for the home and garden can thus be kept for several years.
What should you match your LED post lights with in the garden and on the terrace?
Post lights are matched by using the same colour temperature and the same family of material as the other garden lights: a facade that mixes two whites is immediately visible. The colour of the post, white, anthracite or black, is chosen according to the wall and the ground.
The same light family across the whole facade
A 2700 K post light next to a 4000 K wall light creates a visible break as soon as they are switched on. Set one temperature for the whole garden, then vary the formats. LED solutions and the lighting range let you stay in the same family from one fixture to another.
Design post lights, white or anthracite: playing with colour
White blends into a light render and a recent wall. Anthracite and black disappear on a dark facade, a hedge or earthy ground. Post lights with refined design also play with the shape of the post, cubic or cylindrical, and with the material, aluminium, steel, stainless steel or resin.
Frequently asked questions about outdoor LED post lights
What are the 3 types of lighting?
There is general lighting, which lights an area as a whole, functional lighting, which secures walkways and entrances, and accent lighting, which highlights a plant, a wall or a facade. In a garden, post lights are used for marking and accent.
Which LED post lights should you choose for the garden?
You choose first according to the location, then according to the look. A path calls for downward distribution, a bed for halo distribution, an entrance for a taller post light. The post and the IP rating are decided afterwards, depending on the ground and exposure to water.
Does an outdoor post light have to be waterproof?
Every post light placed outside receives water, if only from rain and cleaning. The IP rating must follow the real exposure: high for a watered area, seaside or windy spot, more modest under a canopy or a covered terrace.
Do you need a motion sensor on an outdoor post light?
The sensor is not essential everywhere. It becomes useful on a rarely used passage, a service entrance or one side of a house that is not lit continuously. On a path or terrace used in the evening, a post light with a standard switch is often enough.
White or anthracite post light: which colour should you choose for the garden?
The colour of the post is chosen in relation to the support: white blends into a light wall and a recent render, anthracite or black is less noticeable on a dark facade, a hedge or earthy ground. The light effect remains the same in both cases.
