A motion sensor LED strip light switches on by itself when someone passes and off after a set time: choose it according to the room to be lit, the power supply available (mains, battery or cell) and the protection rating required by humidity or dust. The rest comes down to two practical settings, the sensor range and the light colour.

What light does a motion sensor LED strip light give?

Expect instant light, with no warm-up, as soon as a body enters the sensor field. The light is direct and even along the whole length of the diffuser, which suits circulation and work areas better than relaxation rooms. The collection has 212 models: compare them one by one on each reference page before choosing.

Motion sensor LED strip light: range and delay

The sensor sweeps a cone several metres in front of it and restarts the countdown with every movement. The delay sets the time before switch-off: short in a corridor where you only pass through, longer in a workshop where you stay still at the bench. These two settings change daily life more than the shape of the housing, and are found on most of the all LED strip lights in the shop.

Neutral white or cool white: which light for which room?

Around 4000 K, neutral white shows colours accurately: best above a worktop, a bench or a mirror. Above 6000 K, cool white leans towards blue and suits a garage, a cellar or a driveway. In a hallway, neutral white stays softer in the evening. To place these shades among the other lighting families, browse all Designix lights.

Where to install a motion sensor LED strip light?

In places where you walk in with your hands full: garage, workshop, cellar, corridor, cupboard, bathroom, hallway or terrace. The question to settle is the exposure of the room: in dry conditions, a simple model is enough; near water, dust or outdoors, you need a sealed strip light.

Motion sensor LED strip light for a garage: at what height should it go?

The sensor must see the driveway, not the opposite wall. Mounting it high near the passage, with the sensor facing the opening, triggers earlier than a strip light screwed to the back of the room. Avoid pointing it at a boiler, a radiator or a window: heat and sunlight cause switch-ons with no one passing. To refine the layout, see lighting a garage.

Bathroom, cellar, outdoors: the IP rating to check

A damp bathroom, a dusty cellar and an exposed terrace do not call for the same level of protection. The table below summarises the common cases and the point to watch in each.

Choosing your sensor strip light according to the room
Room or use Power supply to favour Protection rating to aim for Type of light Point to watch
Garage 220V mains Sealed, dust and splashes Cool white, direct light Sensor height and false triggers
Workshop, bench 220V mains or rechargeable Sealed if dust or humidity Neutral white to judge colours Shadows cast by hands
Bathroom 220V mains Sealed, damp zone Neutral white Sensor away from direct splashes
Outdoors, entrance, terrace 220V mains IP65 sealed Cool white Sensor range and temperature variations
Cupboard, corridor, cellar Rechargeable or cell Standard Cool white Remember recharging and fixing

Room-by-room details are also in bathroom lighting and in installing outdoors.

Motion sensor LED strip light 220V or rechargeable: which to choose?

220V is the obvious choice when an electrical supply exists: the strip stays powered and works without recharging. The rechargeable or cell model takes its place in a cupboard, a corridor or a cellar with no socket, with light for passing through. The choice depends on the connection possible, not on style. A third option exists, 12V low voltage with a transformer, to consider when no mains supply is available at the intended location.

Motion sensor LED strip light 220V: what mains wiring involves

Connection is made as for a standard light point, on a junction box or a connector block, with the power off. The strip stays on standby permanently: the sensor controls the switching, not the switch. Plan the cable entry before fixing the profile, otherwise you will have to take it down again. The range 220V sensor strip lights groups these fixed models.

Battery LED strip light with motion sensor: for places without a socket

It screws on or attaches magnetically with no work and is useful in a cupboard, under a shelf or on a cellar stair. Expect light for passing through, enough to find your way, not for working for long. The cell or battery imposes a recharging rhythm: the busier the place, the more you have to remember it. Compare with switching to rechargeable models or 220V powered strip lights.

220V, rechargeable or cell: which power supply for which use
Power supply Connection Where to use it Limit to know
220V mains On the network, junction box or connector block Garage, workshop, cellar, outdoors Requires an electrical supply nearby
Rechargeable None, recharges by cable Cupboard, corridor, under a shelf To recharge regularly
Cell None Cupboard, drawer, area without a socket Cells to replace, light for passing through

How does the motion sensor of an LED strip light work?

A passive infrared sensor detects the heat variation of a moving body in its field, switches on the strip and restarts the delay for as long as the movement lasts. Without movement, the light goes off by itself. Range, angle, sensitivity and brightness threshold are set on the housing to limit unnecessary triggers.

Detection range and angle: how to read the product page?

Range is given in metres and measured along the sensor axis; the angle, in degrees, describes the cone covered. A wide cone covers a corridor, a narrow cone targets a door. The brightness threshold prevents switching on in broad daylight: set it so the strip only triggers at dusk.

Avoiding unwanted switch-ons: the settings to adjust

A warm draught, an animal, a window exposed to the sun or a radiator in the field are enough to trigger the sensor. Lower the sensitivity, reduce the range, move the housing away from the heat source. Too short a delay gives a flickering effect with every movement. To compare lighting families and their uses, the full lighting catalogue gives the overview.

Do you need an IP65 sealed LED strip light for a garage or workshop?

IP65 protects against dust and water jets: this is the level to aim for outdoors, in a damp garage or a workshop that produces splashes. For a dry corridor or cupboard, an unsealed strip light is enough. The rating is given on the product page, to check before fixing.

IP44 or IP65: the difference that matters on a strip light

IP20 does not protect against water, IP44 withstands splashes, IP65 stops dust and jets. A garage where you bring in a wet car, a utility room or a terrace require the highest level. Sealing costs more: it is only justified if the air or water are genuinely loaded. See sealed strip lights and models protected to IP65.

Workshop and garage: why dust wears out open diffusers

On an unsealed model, wood or plaster dust gets into the housing and settles on the LEDs and the diffuser. The light drops, hot spots appear. A closed housing is cleaned with a wipe and keeps its output. In a workshop, also look at a strip light for the workshop and, for exposed outdoors, sealed outdoor versions.

Cuttable LED strip light: how does it work?

A cuttable strip has regular cut marks: cut only on these marks, then connect each portion to the intended power supply. Cutting between two marks damages the circuit. For a fixed length under a unit or on a ceiling, a rigid strip light avoids any connection.

Where to cut a cuttable LED strip and how to connect the two parts?

The cut marks are visible every few centimetres, often indicated by a pair of pads. Cut in the centre of the mark, then join with a connector or a cable, respecting polarity. Each portion must stay powered: a badly insulated connection causes cuts.

Rigid strip light or flexible strip: what difference on a ceiling?

The rigid strip light screws on, stays straight and supports a sensor housing without bending. The flexible strip follows a moulding or a corner, but needs a support and a suitable power supply. Under a kitchen unit or on a garage ceiling, the rigid version remains simpler to fix. Find both families in strips and battens for linear lighting.

How many strip lights do you need to light a garage or workshop?

Think in terms of areas to cover, not number of products: circulation path, worktop, storage. Two well-distributed strip lights light better than a single very long one at the back. The mounting height and the power of the model determine the spacing to respect.

Placing a strip light near the passage rather than at the back of the room

Place the first light point where you walk and where you stop: garage entrance, in front of the bench, above the storage. A model placed at the back lights the wall and leaves the path in shadow. Two short points are better than one long one badly aimed.

Avoiding glare when working standing up

A bare strip seen up close is dazzling. Place it slightly in front of the worktop, not just above your head, and prefer an opal diffuser that softens the source. A little light reflected by a pale wall completes the direct lighting without adding a light point. Room-by-room guidance is detailed in a strip light for the workshop.

How to install and maintain a motion sensor LED strip light?

Switch off the power, fix the strip on a solid support, aim the sensor towards the passage area, then set the delay and sensitivity. For maintenance, a dry cloth on the diffuser and on the sensor lens is enough to preserve the switching and the light quality.

Fixing and connection: the steps in order

Locate the electrical supply, switch off the breaker, screw the profile into a solid support (plugs in a hollow partition will not hold), connect, then switch the power back on to test. Finally set the brightness threshold and the delay, with the housing accessible. For mains work, a professional remains the right entry point.

Maintaining the sensor so it keeps triggering

A dirty lens or one covered in sanding dust loses sensitivity: dust it twice a year, without aggressive products. Check that nothing has been hung in front of the housing. A sensor that no longer triggers can be tested by waving a hand just in front of it.

Secure payment, tracked delivery, returns and Designix customer service: the order can be tracked, and a question about a model is answered by the team. To place the strip light among the other lighting solutions, choosing a light for each room helps decide between ceiling light, wall light and linear batten. One last point before ordering: check the length available on your support, it is what decides the model.

Frequently asked questions about motion sensor LED strip lights

Battery LED strip light with motion sensor: is it bright enough?

It is enough to light a passage, a cupboard or a stair step, not to work for long in the same place. The cell avoids any wiring and suits premises without a socket. Compare the stated power and the diffuser length before choosing.

Can a motion sensor LED strip light be connected to the mains?

Yes, 220V models connect to the network like a standard light point, on a junction box or a connector block, and remain controlled by the sensor. Connection is made with the power off. In a damp room or outdoors, the chosen model must be sealed.

At what height should a sensor strip light be placed to detect movement?

The sensor must see the area where people move, with no obstacle or glass in front of it. Mounting it high near the passage works better than at the back of a corner. Aim the sensor towards the opening and avoid pointing it at a heat source or a window.

Sealed LED strip light with sensor: is IP65 necessary?

IP65 protects against dust and water jets. It is useful outdoors, in a damp garage, a workshop or a bathroom. For a cupboard or a dry corridor, an unsealed strip light is enough. Check the rating on the product page.

Rechargeable motion sensor LED strip light: for what use?

It is used where no electrical supply is available: cupboard, corridor, cellar, under a shelf or a stair. It is fixed by magnet or screw, recharged, and works without work. Reserve it for light for passing through rather than for prolonged work lighting.

Our advice for choosing
