Start by choosing the length available above the workbench, then the power matched to the surface to be lit, the protection rating according to the humidity and dust in the room, and finally the power supply. A linear strip light placed in front of the worktop removes the shadow of your hands: that is what decides, before the spec sheet.

Which LED workshop strip light should you choose?

Length and power are chosen according to the surface to be lit, the protection rating according to the humidity and dust in the room, the light colour according to the work being done. A strip light is fixed to the ceiling or under a shelf, wired at 220 V or runs on battery.

LED workshop strip light: the four criteria before buying

  • Length and surface: a strip light covers the area it hangs over. A narrow workbench is fine with a short module, a wall of shelves calls for a continuous line.
  • Power and output: what counts is the light received on the worktop, not the highest number. Two moderate sources are better than one oversized one.
  • Protection rating: it decides the real service life in a dusty or washed-down room.
  • Power supply: mains at 220 V when a line exists, battery when no socket is available.

What separates a workshop strip light from a decorative one

The diffuser first: opal and flat on a working model, it softens the source and removes the dazzling point. The fixings next, metal clips or through screws, designed to stay in place above a surface that gets knocked and cleaned. The connection finally, with a side cable entry that accepts terminal blocks and quick connectors. To compare formats, browse all the LED strip lights and spot the linear modules, then widen your view to our full lighting range if the workshop also needs spot lights.

Which light to work by in a workshop without being dazzled?

To work, aim for a neutral light, around 4000 K, which renders shades accurately and tires the eye less than a very cool white. An opal diffuser spreads the light and removes direct glare. In a workshop, several moderate strip lights are better than a single very powerful point.

Light colour for living room or workshop: how to decide

The question comes up often, because the two rooms coexist in the same house. In a workshop, you have to judge a paint shade, read a plan, spot a finishing defect: neutral white, between 3500 and 4500 K, gives that rendering. A cooler white, above 5000 K, exaggerates reflections on glossy surfaces and turns materials blue. Warm white, around 2700 to 3000 K, stays reserved for relaxation corners and the dining side when the workshop adjoins the living room.

Diffuser, reflections and glare: what changes comfort

A bare strip light throws a bright line into your field of vision, and the eye compensates constantly. An opal diffuser caps the source, spreads the flux and turns an aggressive ribbon into an even wash. Placement matters just as much: set in the line of sight, the strip light dazzles; shifted in front of the worktop, it lights your hands without hitting your eyes. To complete a narrow room or a garage workshop, the models designed for the garage follow the same logic of indirect light.

Where to install an LED workshop strip light?

Above the workbench, the strip light goes on the ceiling or under the first shelf, slightly in front of the worktop so it does not cast the shadow of your hands. Passages and storage just need a supplement, often with a sensor for automatic switching.

Above the workbench: the right placement

A work station needs light that falls straight onto the hands and the work, without a shadow cone in the middle. The simplest solution: a strip light fixed under the first shelf, a few tens of centimetres from the surface, moved forward to light the useful area. When the shelf is too high, the ceiling takes over, provided the strip light is aligned with the worktop and not with the wall. A workbench against a window needs a supplement in the evening: natural light changes colour and level all day long.

Under shelves and in passages: supplementary lighting

Storage benefits from short strips, one per bay, to find a box at the back of the shelf. Passages and the workshop corridor cope with automatic switching, which saves looking for the switch with your hands full: see lighting that comes on as you pass. In a small space, WC or utility room, a short strip light is enough and does not clutter the circulation; in a damp room, take care with the protection rating, as for the bathroom, another damp room.

Do you need a waterproof IP65 LED strip light for a workshop?

A waterproof strip light becomes useful as soon as there is fine dust, water splashes or jet washing. The IP65 rating indicates protection against dust and water jets; in a dry, clean room, a simple strip light is more than enough.

Which protection rating to choose for an LED workshop strip light
Environment Main risk Rating to aim for Collection to look at
Dry workshop, light dust Surface dust IP20 wired to the mains at 220 V
Wood, plaster or flour workshop Abundant fine dust IP65 the IP65 strip lights
Area washed with a jet Water splashes IP65 the waterproof models
Under an outdoor canopy Rain and humidity IP65 the waterproof outdoor versions

Damp or dusty workshop: which protection rating

The IP rating is read in two digits. The first covers solids, the second water: an IP65 stops dust and withstands jets, without allowing immersion. A joinery workshop where sawdust flies, a room jet-washed, a damp utility room therefore call for a waterproof model. IP44, more modest, protects against light splashes and suits a dry, ventilated room.

Can you install an IP65 strip light outdoors?

Under a canopy or a roof overhang, yes, provided the wiring is done carefully and the strip light stays sheltered from direct run-off. For real outdoor use, lighting a workshop open to the outside calls for models designed for lasting humidity, seals included. The word "waterproof" remains a commercial one: the IP rating is what counts.

How to fix and wire an LED strip light to the workshop ceiling?

The strip light is screwed to the ceiling or under a shelf with the supplied fixings, then wired to the mains at 220 V, often via a terminal block or a connector. Switch off the power before working, check the cable cross-section and prefer a model with a sensor where there is no switch.

Ceiling or under-shelf fixing: what the length changes

A long strip light is fixed on at least two points, never just one, otherwise it warps. On a plasterboard ceiling, a suitable expansion plug takes the weight; on a chipboard shelf, a through screw with a washer prevents pull-out. Length also decides the result: a module running the full width of the workbench gives a clean line, a shorter module leaves dark areas at the ends.

220 V wiring and sensor: the points to check

Locate the supply line, switch off the circuit breaker, check there is no voltage, then connect live and neutral in the terminal block. The cable stays taut, never pinched under the profile. On a model with a sensor, the cell faces the passage area and not the workbench, to avoid unwanted switching. For a room used intermittently, compare motion sensor powered at 220 V and a simple version according to how often it is used.

Motion sensor or rechargeable strip light: which use in a workshop?

The motion sensor switches the strip light on as you pass then off by itself: handy in a workshop corridor or a storage area, less useful above a workbench in continuous use. The rechargeable version, on the other hand, goes where no socket exists and recharges like a tool.

LED workshop strip light with sensor: passage and storage

The sensor serves areas you cross more than areas you work in: corridor between two benches, side unit, equipment store, technical cupboard. Its limit is clear: above a station occupied for hours, the timer cuts the light at the wrong moment and forces you to move to switch it back on. So keep it for circulation, or keep a switch wired in parallel.

Workshop with no socket: the rechargeable strip light

With no electrical line, the battery settles the question in a few minutes of installation. It suits a workbench that gets moved, a rented room, a makeshift workshop or a storage cupboard. Its constraint is the recharge cycle: you have to remember to put it back on its charger, and the light dims at the end of its runtime. Battery strip lights can be placed freely on a support or lightly fixed, with no building work.

How to light a workshop open to the kitchen?

A workshop open to the kitchen benefits from sharing the same family of light as the living room: neutral white on the worktop side, warmer white on the dining side. Discreet linear strip lights are fixed under the wall units and keep the kitchen line readable.

Consistency of shades between workshop and open kitchen

In a single room, two very distant colour temperatures create a visible boundary. The trick lies in the difference in intensity rather than in style: same family of lights, same diffuser, same shade, and you play on the number of sources. An interior looking for a modern kitchen decor finds a sober line there, with no break between the DIY surface and the cooking surface.

Kitchen decoration: where to place a lighting supplement

The supplement slips under the wall units, above the worktop, or as a discreet wall light along a wall. All kitchen decoration relies on continuous lines: a strip light cut in the right place highlights the splashback, badly placed it cuts the room up. The range of linear strip lights offers the lengths that follow these alignments, and our lighting catalogue lets you match pendant and strip in the same room.

Which mistakes to avoid when lighting a workshop with LED strip lights?

The common mistakes: a single strip light for a whole workshop, an insufficient protection rating in a damp room, a cool light on glossy surfaces, and a fixing that puts the source in your field of vision. Several moderate points are better than one dazzling source.

Too few light points, wrong rating, badly directed light

A single strip light in the centre of a large room leaves dark corners and tires the eye that adapts constantly. An IP20 in a washed-down workshop ends up letting humidity and dust reach the components. A very cool shade on a varnished workbench reflects glare that hides defects. Finally, a source aligned with your gaze dazzles: move it back, move it forward, or add a diffuser.

Maintenance and service life: what matters day to day

A dusty diffuser loses light without warning: a soft, dry cloth twice a year is enough to restore the original level. Avoid abrasive products on polycarbonate and switch off the power before cleaning. Closed aluminium models dissipate heat better and keep their brightness longer. If the workshop connects to other technical rooms, also look at how to fit out the garage too with the same family of strip lights.

Need a single point rather than a line? the lighting range as a whole gathers the supplements that match a workshop strip light. Secure payment, tracked delivery, returns and Designix customer service: you order, you test the light on your workbench, and you adjust if the result does not match.

Frequently asked questions

LED workshop strip light: which power should you choose?

Power is determined by the surface and by the task, not by the highest number. A precision workbench is fine with a moderate strip light placed near the worktop; a large room benefits from multiplying sources rather than oversizing a single one. The available length often guides the final choice.

Light colour for living room: how to choose it without getting it wrong?

You choose the light colour according to what you need to see: neutral white for reading, cooking or DIY, warmer white for relaxing moments. In a workshop, a neutral shade renders colours accurately; in a living room, a warmer shade softens materials and faces.

Can you install a waterproof LED strip light in a damp workshop?

Yes, that is the intended use: an IP65 rating protects against dust and water jets, which suits a workshop jet-washed or exposed to splashes. Be careful, IP65 does not mean immersion. In a dry room, a simple strip light remains sufficient and lighter to install.

How to fix an LED strip light to a workshop ceiling?

First locate the supply line, switch off the power, then screw the fixings into a solid support, ceiling or shelf base. The strip light clips or screws onto them, the connection is made to the mains. A hollow or crumbly support needs a suitable plug.

Do you need a motion sensor LED strip light in a workshop?

It is useful where your hands are busy and the lighting is frequent but short: workshop corridor, store, storage. Above a workbench occupied for hours, the sensor switches off at the wrong moment. In that case, a conventional switch or a model without a sensor remains more comfortable.
