To choose led string lights, start with the room and the socket: plug-in string lights with exposed bulbs for a bedroom or living room, a waterproof string for a balcony or garden. Cable length, spacing between light points and light colour matter more than style.
Which led string lights should you choose for a bedroom, a living room or a terrace?
Measure the length to cover, note the number of light points you want, then check where the socket is. These three reference points help you choose without getting it wrong.
Indoor led string: bedroom, living room, mezzanine
Indoors, the string goes where the eye lingers: a headboard, a shelf, a bookcase, a mantelpiece. A wall string for the bedroom gives a low, warm light without lighting the whole room. For a large surface, a string with round bulbs over several metres fills the wall better than a short model. Allow a fixing point every 40 to 50 cm so the cable does not sag.
Outdoor led string: terrace, balcony, garden
Outside, a string is chosen for water resistance, not for looks. An outdoor string meant for an awning or a terrace railing withstands damp and wind. For a garden, a tree or a hedge, prefer a model that switches on at dusk: a solar string saves running a cable twenty metres. The length in one piece matters more than the number of connectors.
| Room or use | Type of string | Recommended power | Protection rating | Where to place it |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bedroom | String with exposed led bulbs | Mains, low voltage or batteries | Indoor use | Headboard, shelf, wall |
| Living room | String with round bulbs or wall string | Mains or 24V low voltage | Indoor use | Fireplace, bookcase, wall |
| Terrace, sheltered balcony | Outdoor led string | Mains or solar | IP44 | Railing, awning, guard rail |
| Garden, hedge, tree | Outdoor solar string | Solar or rechargeable battery | IP65 | Branch, pergola, fence |
| Staircase | Staircase string | Mains or battery | Indoor use | Handrail, guard rail |
| Site, temporary event | Site led string | 220V mains | IP44 minimum | Structure, tent, scaffolding |
Outdoor string lights: which protection rating should you choose?
Outdoors, the protection rating indicates resistance to water and dust: an IP44 led string suits an awning or a covered terrace, an IP65 led string withstands rain and spray. Below that, the string stays indoors. Connections and plugs need protecting too, not just the bulbs.
IP44 or IP65 led string: what difference in daily use?
An IP44 model lives under shelter: awning, covered balcony, conservatory. It takes splashes but not driving rain. An IP65 model stays outside unprotected, exposed to rain and watering. The Designix catalogue separates IP44 LED strings from IP65 LED strings: one look at the connection box is enough to decide between the two.
Outdoor string: protecting connections and plugs
The weak point of a string outside is not the bulb, it is the connector. Fix the plug above ground, clear of puddles, and use a closed connection box. A waterproof connector replaces the extension lead lying in the grass. If you combine several lengths, place each junction somewhere accessible, so you can step in without taking everything down.
Solar, battery or mains led string: which power supply for which use?
The power supply decides the location. A solar or battery led string installs without a socket or cable, handy in a garden, a hedge or on a balcony far from the home. A mains or 24V low voltage string stays lit longer and suits long lengths.
Outdoor solar led string and battery led string: when they are enough
Solar suits places without a socket: hedge, tree, fence post. The panel must see the sun during the day, otherwise the string lights up little. Rechargeable LED strings play the same role without a panel: you bring them in to charge. A small battery string lasts a few evenings, to be kept for occasional decoration. Battery life drops faster in flashing mode than in steady mode, whatever the model.
220V or 24V led strings: transformer and connection
A 220V string plugs straight into a socket, which simplifies a long outdoor string. A 24V low voltage string goes through a transformer to be sheltered from rain: safer to touch, it suits models with many bulbs and walkways. In both cases, check that the socket can stay powered continuously.
| Power supply | Ideal for | What to plan for | Lighting |
|---|---|---|---|
| 220V mains | Long lengths, daily use | A nearby socket, waterproof protection outside | Continuous while the string is plugged in |
| 24V low voltage | Long strings with many bulbs | A suitable transformer, sheltered from rain | Continuous, transformer switched on |
| Rechargeable | No socket, string moved often | Regular battery recharging | Depending on mode, steady or flashing |
| Batteries | Small strings, occasional decoration | Spare batteries | Depending on mode, steady or flashing |
| Solar | Garden, hedge, balcony without a socket | A panel exposed to sun during the day | Switches on at dusk |
How do you fix string lights without drilling holes?
You can fix string lights without drilling using clear adhesive hooks, curtain clips or repositionable fasteners, placed on a clean, dry surface. The adhesive holds a light led string, not a heavy cable or a damp outdoor surface.
Bedroom wall string: hanging without damaging the wall
Clean the wall, let it dry, then place the hooks at even intervals. A wall string light can also be fixed with small flat-head pins if the surface is wood. Spread the supports about every 40 cm so the cable does not pull on a single point, and keep a soft loop between two fixings.
Staircase string: fixing and keeping the way clear
On a staircase, the string runs along the handrail without ever overhanging the step or blocking the hand. Fix it on the wall side, not the open side. A staircase string is placed following the rail, with a fixing at each post. Avoid pulling the cable taut like a wire: let it follow the slope.
How do you choose the power and consumption of an led string?
The stated power corresponds to the total of the led bulbs in the string, and the gap between two models comes mainly from the number of light points and their intensity. A string for decorative use lights up, it does not replace room lighting: you choose it for the mood.
Led bulb and E27 or E14 socket: what changes from one model to another
Strings with interchangeable bulbs use E27 (large socket) or E14 (small socket) fittings: that is what lets you replace a burnt-out bulb without changing the string. A model with fixed bulbs is harder to repair. The solar string and models with built-in leds have no socket: you choose them for the use, not for the bulb.
Led string light: the effect matters more than the power
A string of the same length can show very different powers depending on the number of bulbs. To compare, look at the spacing between light points and the colour of the light, not just the label. Too cool a light hardens a living room; a warm white sets a softer mood, suited to a string light for a bedroom or living room.
Led string, led strip or wall string: which solution for which wall?
An led string is placed and moved, it gives a chain of visible light points. An led strip lines up and sticks along a shelf, a piece of furniture or a skirting board, for continuous, grazing light. The two complement each other in the same room, without replacing one another.
Cuttable led strip: how does it work?
A cuttable led strip has regular cutting marks. You cut only on these marks, with scissors, so as not to sever the circuit. You then connect the strip to a connector or a segment provided by the manufacturer, always with the power off. A strip cut anywhere other than the marks will not light up again.
Wall string light: decorating a wall, a headboard, a mirror
The wall string draws a frame, a string around a mirror or a curtain of light behind a headboard. It goes up before the strip, which then highlights a shelf. For a whole wall, a longer wall string light fills the space better than a short model completed with extensions.
How do you match several string lights in the same room?
You match several strings by keeping the same light colour, preferably a warm white for a bedroom or living room, and varying only the formats and lengths. Two different whites show immediately and break the whole effect, while a single white unifies the room.
Coloured or white led string light: which effect?
A white string lights and structures; a coloured string becomes the focal point and tires the eye less if it stays in the background. In a bedroom, better to keep colour to a single wall and leave the rest white. A multicoloured led string is kept for parties or a playroom.
Warm white or neutral white: matching the rooms of a house
In general, a bedroom and a living room call for warm white (around 2700 K), a kitchen or an office for neutral white (around 4000 K). Mixing the two in the same room creates a visible patch. The power point matters too: if two strings must run from the same socket, plan an accessible power strip rather than three extension leads.
How do you care for and store an led string so it lasts?
Dust the bulbs with the power off using a soft, dry cloth, check the connections and seals of outdoor models, then wind the cable loosely around a support before storing the string somewhere dry, away from cold and knocks.
Cleaning an indoor and outdoor string light
Unplug before any handling. A dry cloth is enough on the bulbs; water is only useful on a closed outdoor model, and never on the power box. Inspect the connector seals before plugging back in: a cracked seal lets damp in. For an IP65 string, a check at the start of the season is enough.
Storing an led string after the holidays
Wind the cable around a piece of cardboard or a soft reel, never tight around the bulbs. Store the string somewhere dry, in a closed box, away from frost. An untangled led Christmas string is put back up in a few minutes the following year, and the connections suffer less from storage.
Led lighting: string, led wall light or led ceiling light, which should you choose?
An led string brings decorative, diffuse light, not task lighting: to read or move around, you need a fixed point, an led ceiling light or an led wall light. The right setup combines main lighting on the ceiling and a string as a mood extra.
Led wall light and led ceiling light: fixed lighting on wall and ceiling
A wall light illuminates a corridor, a landing, a headboard without taking up floor space. A ceiling light illuminates the whole room. To find these families, browse all our light fittings: the string comes after, as a second layer. In a bedroom, a wall light and a string above the bed complement each other without doubling up.
Led chandelier and pendant: the rooms where a string is not enough
Above a dining table, only a pendant hangs low enough to light the plates. A chandelier fills the volume of a living room with a high ceiling. The string, for its part, remains an accessory: it highlights a railing or a wall. The Designix light fitting catalogue gathers these fixed points, from the entrance to the living room.
Frequently asked questions about the led string
What is the power of a string light?
The power is read on the label: it adds up the led bulbs in the string, and therefore depends on the number of light points and their intensity. Two strings of the same length can show different powers. To compare, better to look at the number of bulbs and the light effect.
How do you fix a wall string without drilling holes?
On a clean, dry wall, clear adhesive hooks or repositionable fasteners are enough for a light string. Spread them evenly to stop the cable sagging, and avoid adhesive on a damp, dusty or recently painted wall.
Can an outdoor string light stay outside all year?
Only a string rated for outdoor use can stay outside, with a suitable protection rating: IP44 under an awning or a covered terrace, IP65 for direct exposure to rain. Plugs and connections need protecting too, and a solar model is placed facing the sun. For a permanent outdoor connection, look at 220V strings.
Cuttable led strip: how does it work?
A cuttable led strip has regular cutting marks: you cut only on these marks, with scissors, so as not to sever the circuit. You then connect the strip to a connector or a segment provided by the manufacturer, always with the power off. A strip pairs well with a string light in the same room.
Can an led string be used as ceiling lighting?
An led string on the ceiling gives mood lighting, made of spaced light points: it does not replace an led ceiling light, which illuminates the whole room. For a living room, you keep fixed lighting and add the string as decoration.
Choosing, ordering and installing with peace of mind
Once the room, the protection rating and the power supply are defined, all that is left is to check the length and the number of fixings before ordering. If you hesitate between two lengths, start from the wall to cover, not from the longest model. For a large surface, a well-sized led string light avoids multiplying extension leads and connectors.
