A LED panel is a flat light fixture, recessed or surface-mounted on the ceiling, that spreads uniform light across its entire surface with no hot spots or harsh shadows. To choose one, start with the use: the area to cover, ceiling height, the desired light tone, then settle on the format and mounting type.
How does a ceiling LED panel work?
The 11 LED panels hide diodes spread behind a diffuser, powered by a driver. Light comes out of the whole surface instead of from a single point, which reduces harsh contrasts and glare when you look up at the ceiling.
Ceiling LED panels: recessed or surface-mounted?
A recessed panel sits inside a slab or a false ceiling: the fixture is flush and you only see the light. A surface-mounted one screws onto the existing support, with a few visible centimetres of thickness. The light output is similar; what changes is access to the driver, and therefore future maintenance. To see the available families, browse all our light fixtures.
Modular LED panels: for which rooms?
Modular models join edge to edge to cover a large surface, where a single panel would leave dark areas on the sides. They suit large living rooms as well as utility spaces, with robust versions to light a garage or workshop.
Which LED panel to choose for each room?
The choice depends first on the use: a living room calls for broad, low-glare light, a bedroom a warm, dimmable tone, an office a neutral and even light, a garage a robust surface-mounted model. Then look at the area to cover and the available ceiling height.
Living room LED ceiling light: what light for a living space?
In a living room, you want light that does not flatten faces and does not reflect on a television screen. A large diffuser, paired with a dimmer, lets you move from bright light during the day to a low mood in the evening. It is also the room where several sources are often combined: find a light fixture for the living room in our selection.
Bedroom LED: why soft light?
In a bedroom, the light just before bedtime influences falling asleep: prefer a warm, low-glare tone and a model that dims down. A slim panel, with no visible flicker, avoids eye strain. For the other rooms in the home, see home lighting.
| Room | Recommended panel | Light type | Point to watch |
|---|---|---|---|
| Living room | Rectangular panel or LED ceiling light | Warm to neutral, low glare | Dimmer and ceiling height |
| Bedroom | Slim panel with soft diffusion | Warm and dimmable | No flicker |
| Kitchen | Recessed panel | Neutral, faithful colour rendering | Cleaning the diffuser |
| Office | Square or modular panel | Neutral and even | Reflections on screen |
| Garage or workshop | Surface-mounted panel | Broad diffusion | Dust, moisture, impacts |
| Hallway or corridor | Round or compact panel | Warm | Instant start |
60x60 LED panels, modular or wall-mounted: which format for which ceiling?
The square fits into a technical ceiling, the rectangular one lengthens a room, the round one stays discreet under a low ceiling. Modular panels join together to cover a large surface, while a wall panel lights a wall or a corridor to complement the ceiling.
60x60 LED panels: the format for technical ceilings
The 60x60 LED panel follows the standard module of suspended tile ceilings: it fits into the existing grid, with no cutting, and replaces a solid tile. The pattern can be repeated identically across a whole surface, giving an even ceiling. It is chosen mainly for an office, a utility room or a large living room with a false ceiling. For spaces where dust and impacts matter, look at the robust models for utility rooms.
Wall-mounted LED panels: a complement, not a replacement
A wall panel lights a vertical surface, a headboard or a long corridor. It does not replace general light: it complements it and avoids turning on the whole ceiling just to cross a passage. It is the same principle as general lighting completed by accent sources.
| Format | Mounting type | Suitable ceiling | Effect |
|---|---|---|---|
| Square 60x60 | Recessed | Suspended ceiling tiles | Even, integrated look |
| Rectangular | Recessed or surface-mounted | Concrete or plasterboard | Lengthens the room |
| Round | Surface-mounted | Low ceiling | Discreet, centred lighting |
| Modular | Surface-mounted assembly | Large surfaces | Combines to cover the room |
| Wall (sconce) | Wall fixing | Corridor, headboard | Accent light |
Recessed or surface-mounted LED panel: which mounting to choose?
A recessed panel sits inside a false ceiling or slab and is flush with the surface. A surface-mounted one screws directly onto the existing ceiling, with no cutting work, which suits concrete slabs. In both cases, provide access to the driver for maintenance.
How to fix an LED panel without a false ceiling?
Without a false ceiling, choose a surface-mounted model: a frame screws into the support, and the panel clips or screws into it. The weight stays moderate; the fixing simply needs to suit the ceiling material (plasterboard, concrete, wood). A flat LED ceiling light follows the same logic, with a more elaborate shape. Compare the finishes in our light fixture catalogue.
Where to house the driver and cables?
The driver is the panel's power supply. When recessed, it sits above the slab, in the false ceiling void: you therefore need a hatch or a removable tile nearby. When surface-mounted, it is often housed in the body of the fixture or in a visible box. Plan the connection before drilling.
How to adjust the light of an LED panel?
Colour temperature sets the mood: a warm tone relaxes, a neutral tone stays faithful for reading or cooking. A dimmer-compatible panel lets you lower the intensity in the evening. Connected models add control via remote or app.
Connected LED panels: how do they work?
A connected panel includes a radio or wifi receiver: you control switching, intensity and sometimes the tone from a remote or a phone. Everything depends on the compatibility of the home and the wish to depend on an app. Conversely, a panel connected to a simple switch remains usable without a network. Both approaches coexist in the Designix light fixture collection.
Which colour temperature for an LED panel?
In general, warm white sits around 2700 to 3000 K, neutral white around 4000 K, and cool tones beyond 5000 K. A living room or bedroom works well in warm; a kitchen or office benefits from neutral, which is more faithful for judging a colour or reading a document. Also check that the dimmer is compatible with the driver, otherwise the light may flicker.
LED panel, ceiling light or chandelier: what to choose for the living room?
An LED panel lights the whole room broadly without being seen, an LED ceiling light brings a shape to the centre of the ceiling, an LED chandelier becomes a hanging decorative feature. The LED wall sconce adds extra light on a free wall or near a sofa.
Modern LED wall sconce: where to place it?
Place it at usage height, on a free wall, on either side of a sofa or along a corridor. Its role is to light without turning on the ceiling: reading corner, passage, headboard. A sconce alone mainly lights the wall and the nearby space; for a whole room, better to complete it with a panel. Other configurations are shown in choosing your light fixture well.
Living room LED chandelier: what volume to hang it in?
An LED chandelier lights a room like a ceiling light, with downward light and a stronger decorative effect. It needs enough clear height above a table or the floor, and is chosen mainly where it stays visible. Under a low ceiling, a hanging model gets in the way; a panel or a flat ceiling light works better.
| Fixture | Where it goes | What it brings | When to prefer it |
|---|---|---|---|
| LED panel | Ceiling, recessed or surface-mounted | Even light across the whole room | General lighting, low ceiling |
| LED ceiling light | Ceiling, surface-mounted | Central lighting with a marked shape | Living room, hallway |
| LED chandelier | Ceiling, hanging | Decorative effect and downward light | Dining room, high volume |
| LED wall sconce | Wall, at usage height | Extra light | Corridor, reading corner |
| LED strip | Under furniture or in a groove | Indirect line of light | Highlighting a worktop |
How to maintain and make an LED panel last?
Dust the diffuser with a soft, dry cloth, without abrasive products, because dust dims the light. Flickering most often comes from an incompatible dimmer or a tired driver, not the panel: that is the pair to check before replacing the fixture.
How to clean an LED panel?
Cut the power before any work. Run a dry microfibre cloth over the diffuser; for a greasy mark in the kitchen, a slightly damp cloth is enough, followed by drying. Avoid sprays and solvents, which dull the surface and can crack the diffuser. Dusting every few months is enough to keep an even light.
Why does an LED panel flicker?
Three causes stand out: a dimmer not compatible with the driver, a driver at the end of its life, or a poor connection. Test by wiring the panel to a simple switch; if the flicker disappears, the dimmer is the cause. The fixture itself is rarely at fault.
LED panels: which mistakes to avoid before buying?
The most common mistakes: ordering a recessed format without a false ceiling, forgetting the protection rating for a damp room, or confusing a ceiling panel with a photo or grow panel, which do not light a living space. Better to define the use before the shape.
How many light points to plan in a room?
In general, a living room is satisfied with one general source on the ceiling plus two extra sources (sconce, lamp, strip). A large surface benefits from being covered by several panels rather than a single very concentrated model, which leaves shadow areas. Ceiling height and wall colour change the feel: a dark wall absorbs more.
Photo or grow LED panels: is it the same fixture?
No. A ceiling panel lights a room for the human eye; a grow panel targets plant growth, with a different spectrum, and a photo panel lights a subject for a shot. The format and the name look alike, the use has nothing to do with it. Always specify the purpose: living space, lighting for a large surface, or growing.
Frequently asked questions about LED panels
How does a cuttable LED strip work?
An LED strip is cut only at the marks indicated by the manufacturer: between two marks the circuit stays whole, elsewhere you make it unusable. After cutting, you restart from the connection pads of the kept section, with a suitable connector or a cleanly soldered wire.
Which powerful LED ceiling light to choose for a large room?
For a large room, first look at the area to light and the ceiling height, then prefer a large diffuser over a concentrated spotlight. An LED ceiling light or a large-format panel limits shadow areas and is easier to control with a dimmer.
What is the difference between an LED ceiling light and an LED panel?
The LED panel looks like a flat tile, often square or rectangular, recessed or surface-mounted, designed for even general lighting. The LED ceiling light is a fixture fixed directly to the ceiling, also chosen for its shape and style. Both families are gathered in see the whole range.
Where to install an LED wall sconce in a living room?
An LED wall sconce goes at usage height, on a free wall or on either side of a sofa, to add extra light without turning on the ceiling. It lights a reading corner or highlights a wall, in keeping with the tone of the ceiling light.
How to light a ceiling with LEDs?
You light a ceiling by spreading the light rather than concentrating it: recessed panel, surface-mounted panel or several aligned points. Light bounced back to the ceiling by a sconce or a groove strip visually enlarges the room and reduces glare. For technical use, see the LED panels for workshops.
