Plan on one lantern per living zone: a wall lantern above the front door, a floor lantern near the table, a portable one in the flowerbed. The format is chosen according to the possible fixing and exposure to rain, the light according to evening use.

Which LED outdoor lantern for which space?
A wall lantern lights a facade, a front door or a narrow passage. A floor lantern lights a terrace without drilling into the facade, and moves when the furniture changes. A portable or hanging lantern accompanies a garden corner, a porch, a low table outside. The choice depends on the surface to cover, the possible fixing and exposure to rain. You will find plenty to compare in the complete lantern collection.
| Area | Recommended format | Light sought | Point of vigilance |
|---|---|---|---|
| Entrance and door | Wall lantern, beam facing down | Warm white, low glare | Mounting height and access to the connection |
| Facade and gable | Two symmetrical wall lanterns | Even warm white | Same model and same shade on both sides |
| Covered terrace | Wall or floor lanterns | Neutral white for moving around | No source in the guests' eyes |
| Garden and flowerbed | Portable or floor lantern | Diffuse warm white | Keep away from sprinklers and flooded areas |
| Path and gate | Floor lantern or with sensor | Neutral white, switching on when passing | Setting the sensitivity and the delay |
Wall, floor or hanging: which format of LED outdoor lantern to choose?
A wall lantern is fixed to the facade, about 1.80 m from the ground above a door. A floor lantern stands on the ground and moves, without drilling. A hanging or portable version suits a porch or a garden table. They do not all offer the same wiring or the same mobility: the wall version requires an electrical supply at height, the floor version is content with a socket or a battery.
Wall LED outdoor lanterns: what size above a door?
In general, a lantern width between a quarter and a third of the door width is chosen, to stay proportionate. A narrow door takes a small model; a double door accepts wider. Above all check the door swing and the space for the handle before drilling, then compare the dimensions in the floor-standing outdoor lanterns if the facade cannot be drilled.
LED outdoor light or lantern: what really changes
An LED outdoor light means any light point intended for outside: bollard, spotlight, wall light, lantern. The lantern refers to a closed silhouette, often in metal with glass, which diffuses in several directions. The choice is made on the format, the fixing and the protection rating. To situate the families, browse all our lights.
What light does an LED outdoor lantern give?
An LED in warm white, around 2,700 to 3,000 K, gives a light close to the bulb and brings out the stone. A neutral white, towards 4,000 K, makes outlines sharper for moving around. The diffuser and the orientation count as much as the power: a light directed towards the ground dazzles less. Find the corresponding models in the LED lanterns.
Warm white or neutral white outside?
Warm white warms a stone wall, a wooden facade or a dining corner, and tires the eye less in the evening. Neutral white is used for movement areas: path, stairs, gate, where you want to distinguish an outline quickly. Avoid mixing the two shades on the same facade, the difference is immediately visible once night falls.
LED outdoor lanterns: integrated LED or E27 socket?
The integrated LED is sealed in the housing: nothing to choose, nothing to get wrong, but nothing to replace. The E27 socket accepts a standard LED bulb, which you change or whose colour temperature you modify. The second option offers more flexibility over time, the first simplifies installation and waterproofing.
Which IP protection rating is needed for an LED outdoor lantern?
An IP rating gives two pieces of information: protection against dust and against water. Under a canopy, an IP44 is often enough. Exposed to driving rain, a lantern must display at least IP54, and IP65 if it receives water jets. Also check the seal and the material. The models intended to stay outside are grouped in the lanterns designed to stay outside.
| Rating | Stated protection | Suitable location |
|---|---|---|
| IP44 | Protected against water splashes | Under a canopy, a porch, a covered terrace |
| IP54 | Limited dust and water splashes | Facade exposed to rain, without direct jet |
| IP65 | Dust-tight and water-jet proof | Highly exposed wall, moderate jet cleaning |
| IP67 | Temporary immersion | Occasionally floodable area, pool edge |
By the sea, salty air attacks ordinary metals: prefer treated aluminium or stainless steel, and look at the screws. Metal lanterns are rarely equal from one finish to another, weight and paint are good indicators. A closed housing without ventilation makes the LED heat up and shortens its life.
LED outdoor lantern with sensor, solar or rechargeable: which to choose?
The motion sensor switches the lantern on when passing, useful for an entrance or a quiet path. Solar avoids all wiring but depends on the facade's sunshine. The rechargeable version is stored and recharged indoors: handy for a garden table, less so for continuous lighting.
Motion sensor: where to place it?
Aim the cell towards the arrival area, not towards the street or a tree that moves in the wind. Set the delay long enough not to plunge back into darkness mid-journey, and the sensitivity low enough to avoid pointless switching on. The wall above a door and along a path are the two most effective locations; see the models with motion sensor.
Solar or rechargeable: what real use?
Solar suits an isolated point, a gate, a flowerbed, a fence, where running a cable would cost a lot. It depends on the panel and its orientation, and gives less in winter. The rechargeable version is brought back into the house to charge: perfect on a table, as a complement, not for keeping an entrance lit all night. Compare the solar lanterns without wiring and the rechargeable lanterns.
How to match your outdoor lanterns with the facade?
A black or anthracite colour stands out on a light render and stays discreet. On stone, brick or wood, a patinated metal and a vintage silhouette blend in better. Repeat the same model on either side of the door, with the same light colour, to avoid a heterogeneous result.
Black outdoor lanterns: why it works
Black visually disappears on a light wall: you see the light, not the housing. It also stands the test of time without showing fingerprints or drips. On a dark wooden facade, it blends in to the point of becoming invisible, which may or may not be sought after. See the black finishes for light facades.
Vintage lanterns and old lanterns: matching with stone
A cage silhouette, slightly frosted glass and patinated metal recapture the logic of an old facade. The classic mistake is to mix a very slim contemporary model and a cage lantern on the same wall: the eye compares. Choose a single vocabulary, then extend it from the gate to the porch. Browse the vintage lanterns and the old lanterns.
How to install and maintain an LED outdoor lantern?
Place a wall lantern at about 1.80 m, on the door handle side, with the beam towards the ground. Connection to the existing 230 V is done with the power off. Twice a year, wipe the diffuser and check that the seal lets water drain.
At what height to mount a wall lantern?
Around 1.80 m for a front door, higher if the door is large. To light a terrace, go down towards 2 m aiming downwards, or distribute several points rather than a single very strong one. A sensor is placed lower, around 1.50 m, to catch a passage without aiming at the clouds. For a table, the portable lanterns to light a terrace avoid any drilling.
The maintenance that avoids humidity failures
An outdoor light rarely dies of the LED: it dies of the water left inside. Clean the glass with soapy water, dry, then check the seal and the drainage hole under the housing. Tighten the screws once a year, they loosen with temperature variations. In a garden, keep the garden lanterns away from automatic sprinklers.
What are the drawbacks of LED lamps?
An LED heats little on a facade but tolerates a closed housing without ventilation poorly, which shortens its life. On entry-level models, the light may lean towards cold or flicker. And when the LED is integrated, it cannot be replaced: the whole module has to be changed.
Does an LED fear cold and humidity?
Cold does not switch it off, it slightly reduces its brightness in severe frost. Humidity is more dangerous: condensation in the housing, oxidation of contacts, glass that fogs up. A correct seal, a drainage hole and a suitable IP rating settle the essentials. Leave the light ventilated at the back rather than stuck against a damp wall.
Integrated LED: what to do when it no longer lights up?
The module is sealed, it is not sold separately. Before concluding, switch off the power and check the tightness of the wires and the absence of water in the housing: that is often where the failure lies. If the module is dead, the light is replaced. This is the point to weigh against a socket model, more flexible over time. For a first installation, start from the terrace lanterns or from our lighting catalogue.

Frequently asked questions about LED outdoor lanterns
What is the most effective outdoor lighting?
Outdoors, effectiveness is as much about direction as about the source: an LED aimed towards the ground, with a reflector or a diffuser, lights without dazzling. A motion sensor avoids lighting an empty area all night. Solar suits isolated points, without wiring, provided the facade receives the sun.
Can a powerful LED wall light replace an outdoor lantern?
A wall light is first of all an indoor light: its housing and seals are not designed for rain. Outdoors, you need a protection rating suited to the exposure, a housing that drains water and a material that does not rust. Power never compensates for poor waterproofing.
Do you need an electrician to install an outdoor lantern?
If a light point already exists on the facade with a cable outlet, replacement is done with the power off, circuit breaker switched off. Creating a new point, running a line or going under a wall requires a professional. In all cases, switching off at the panel is the first step, even before removing the old light.
How to recognise a quality outdoor lantern?
Look at the weight and finish of the metal, the quality of the glass, the presence of seals and a drainage hole under the housing, a clearly stated IP rating and stainless steel screws. A supplied installation guide and a standard socket are good indicators of durability, as is an accessible or replaceable LED module.
Does an LED outdoor lantern light enough for a terrace?
A wall lantern mainly lights the area close to the wall. For a terrace, a floor model or several distributed points give a more even light. Better two low-power sources aimed towards the ground than a single very strong one, which dazzles the guests and leaves dark areas.
