Space LED outdoor bollard lights every two to three steps along a path, with the beam aimed at the ground, and aim for a protection rating of at least IP65 if rain falls directly on them. An LED outdoor bollard light illuminates the walkway rather than the facade: it traces a path, marks a step, and does not dazzle the person arriving.

LED outdoor bollard lights are chosen on four points: height, beam orientation, material and protection rating. The rest, light colour and finish, comes down to matching the whole with the building.

What is an LED outdoor bollard light for and what light does it give?

In the evening, an unlit path is crossed by groping; with a few bollard lights, it becomes a legible path leading to the door without a floodlight aimed at the facade. It is an outdoor ground fitting, set low, whose role is to signal and guide, not to flood.

A grazing light that traces the path

The beam is directed downwards and often closed by a frosted diffuser: the light grazes the ground, marks the edge of the path and leaves the facade in shadow. This is what distinguishes a bollard light from low outdoor lighting of the tall bollard type, which rises higher and lights more widely.

What sits behind the diffuser

Two families coexist: the integrated LED, which cannot be replaced but offers homogeneous light, and the socket, often GU10, which allows the source to be changed. Power is supplied at 230 V after a transformer, or at 12 V low voltage on some models. To place each family, browse all our light fittings.

Where to install LED outdoor bollard lights around the house?

They go where people walk: path edge, driveway, terrace perimeter, around beds and at the foot of a fence. The right reflex is to place them on the walkway side, away from the wall, so that the light falls on the ground and not on the facade.

The spots that change an evening

A marked entrance path avoids missteps and shows visitors the way. A terrace perimeter extends the room outdoors. A fence bollard light underlines the boundary of the property without turning it into a luminous wall. At the foot of a bed, the light lifts the foliage from below and gives the garden relief without washing it in white.

The installation rule: walkway side, away from the wall

A bollard light stuck against the wall projects an arc of light onto the render and leaves the ground dark, the opposite of the intended goal. Move it a few tens of centimetres away, on the path side, and keep a regular alignment. To complete with the other light fittings of the house, this orientation logic also applies to facade wall lights.

How to choose an LED outdoor bollard light according to ground and exposure?

The environment decides before aesthetics. Under a canopy, moderate protection is enough; with heavy watering, by a pool or by the sea, you need a high protection rating, a material that fears neither water nor salt, and fixings that do not rust.

Exposure decides before style

Ground that stays wet, automatic watering or splashes from a pool require reinforced protection and proper drainage at the foot of the fitting. By the sea, add salt resistance to the question.

Which protection rating (IP) according to exposure
Exposure IP to aim for Points to watch
Under a canopy or sheltered porch Moderate protection (IP44) Seals and cable glands properly closed
Exposed to direct rain Reinforced protection (IP65) Water drainage, no basin at the foot
Poolside, frequent watering High protection (IP65 to IP67) Resistance to chlorine and splashes
Seaside High protection (IP65) Salt-resistant material, stainless steel screws
No electrical network available Self-contained solar model Sun exposure of the panel, sensor maintenance

Material and colour temperature

Powder-coated aluminium remains understated and light; stainless steel holds up over time on a contemporary facade; treated wood matches terraces and fences of the same material; composite allows shapes that metal does not. On the light side, an LED outdoor bollard light in stainless steel or aluminium set at 2700 K to 3000 K remains warm and discreet, while 4000 K lights a technical path more sharply. You can browse the light fitting selection and the light fittings for outdoor and indoor use to match the two registers.

What height and spacing for a well-lit path?

A bollard light is placed low, so that the light grazes the ground instead of heading towards the eyes. Spacing follows the rhythm of the path: the lower the bollard lights, the closer together they go. Avoid aligning them facing the front door, where the reflection bothers visitors arriving.

Height references

Around 30 to 50 cm for a ground bollard light at the edge of a path, a little higher for a wall light that underlines a wall or pillar. The general rule fits in one sentence: the bottom of the beam must fall on the walking area, never in the line of sight.

The rhythm of spacing

Allow regular spacing, of the order of two to three steps between two low points, tightened on bends and changes of level. Always place a bollard light at the start of the path and one at the end: this is what makes the progression legible. For an overview of the families available, see the complete light fitting range.

Which bollard light for which outdoor use
Use Placement Height to aim for What to favour
Pedestrian path and driveway Path edge, walkway side Low, light grazing the ground Downward beam, regular spacing
Terrace and pool deck Perimeter, away from swimming areas Low to mid-height High protection rating, water-resistant material
Fence edge and wall Wall mounting or at the foot of the wall Mid-height Adjustable orientation, discreet fixings
Beds and garden Between plantings, path side Low Closed diffuser, easy cleaning
Entrance and door As a side wall light, never facing the threshold Mid-height Non-dazzling light for visitors

Wired or solar LED bollard light: which to choose?

A wired model works all year round without depending on the sky and can be controlled with the house lighting, but it requires a power supply to be planned. A solar model installs without a cable, with output that varies according to exposure and season. The choice therefore depends on the sunlight in the area and the works accepted.

Wired: light that does not depend on the sky

Connected to the mains, a wired outdoor bollard light switches on at a set time or on detection, with no surprises in winter. It accepts a programmable timer or a motion sensor and keeps the same intensity all year round. 12 V low-voltage models simplify wiring and reduce electrical risk at ground level.

Solar: no cable but dependent on exposure

A solar LED bollard light installs in an hour, without digging up a terrace or running a conduit. In return, a panel in the shade or a cloudy week means weaker light. It suits a bed far from any power supply; for a very busy entrance path, wired remains more consistent. Compare the two approaches in our light fitting catalogue, then choosing the light for each room follows the same method: use first, technique second.

How to install and maintain an LED outdoor bollard light?

Prepare a protected power supply, mount the bollard light on a stable support and close the cable gland to keep it watertight. Maintenance is limited to gentle cleaning of the diffuser and checking seals and screws before winter.

A clean installation in four steps

A stable, level support, neat cable routing, a tightened cable gland, seals in place: these four points decide the lifespan of the fitting. On a wooden terrace, fix to the structure and not at random in the boards, with a base that lets water drain away. As soon as a point connected to the mains must be created, the electrician remains the safe solution.

Maintenance before winter

A frosted diffuser is cleaned with warm soapy water; avoid abrasives on stainless steel and brush treated wood gently. Before the bad season, check the screws, the seals and the absence of standing water at the foot. The models in the collection and the light fittings for outdoor and indoor use are checked at the same time.

What is the most efficient outdoor lighting?

The most efficient outdoor lighting is the one that lights the useful area without excess: light directed at the ground, switched on only when needed, with a sensor or a timer. A low-power LED bollard light, well positioned, is often enough where a floodlight dazzles the facade and the neighbourhood. The difference lies less in the source than in the orientation and the duration of lighting. To see the available light fittings, first compare beams and mounting heights.

What budget should be planned for LED outdoor bollard lights?

The budget varies mainly with the material, the power mode and the finish: a solar composite bollard light remains affordable, a stainless steel or powder-coated aluminium bollard light with integrated LED sits higher. Better to equip a whole area consistently than to multiply mismatched models.

What makes the budget vary

Material weighs heavily, stainless steel more than powder-coated aluminium. The source also counts: integrated LED or replaceable socket, 230 V or low-voltage supply. A careful finish and a frosted glass diffuser add to the price without changing the function.

Equipping an area rather than collecting models

A whole path calls for an identical series, an entrance can take a more elaborate piece. This is the only trade-off that avoids breaks in style. Find the references in our light fitting catalogue, then continue with indoor light fittings if the same handwriting is to continue behind the bay window.

Frequently asked questions about LED outdoor bollard lights

What is the best powerful LED outdoor floodlight?

A powerful floodlight is used to light a wide area: facade, courtyard, site. It does not replace a bollard light, which signals a passage with low light. The right choice depends on the surface to be covered, the orientation to avoid glare and the protection rating linked to the actual exposure of the fitting.

How to choose an LED wall light for outdoor use?

An outdoor wall light is fixed near a door, under a porch or on a facade. Check the protection rating according to rain exposure, the downward orientation of the beam, the weather-resistant material and the colour temperature matched to the rest of the house lighting.

How many bollard lights to install along a path?

The logic is that of rhythm: a bollard light at the start of the path, then regular spacing up to the end, bringing the lowest models closer together. Avoid placing any facing the front door, where direct light bothers visitors arriving.

Does an LED outdoor bollard light consume a lot?

A bollard light runs on a low-power source, switched on for a few hours in the evening: its consumption remains modest compared with halogen lighting. Adding a sensor or a timer further limits unnecessary hours, without changing the light output.

Can an LED outdoor bollard light be installed on a wooden terrace?

Yes, provided it is fixed to a stable structure and not drilled at random into the boards. Favour a base that lets water drain away, neat cable routing under the terrace and a protection rating corresponding to the actual exposure of the fitting.

Do you need an electrician to install outdoor bollard lights?

As soon as a light point connected to the house mains must be created, the electrician is the safe solution: protected connection, earthing, watertight cable passages. Solar models, and 12 V low voltage depending on the case, are installed more simply without a 230 V network.

Our advice for choosing
