Light the area you use in the evening first: a path is handled with low light, a terrace with light close to that of the living room, a facade with wall washing. The choice then comes down to three levers: the protection rating according to water exposure, the colour temperature, and the power supply, mains or solar panel.
Which LED garden light should you choose to illuminate a garden?
Allow three to five light points for a town garden, one per use: one for the path, one for the table, one for the facade. Spreading them out is better than a single floodlight that flattens everything and dazzles from the terrace. The lighting catalogue as a whole reads like a toolbox: each shape corresponds to a place.
LED garden lights: start with the area to be lit
A path calls for low, even pools of light, a terrace for light placed at the height of a seated person's face, a tree for lighting from below. The area decides the type of light before any consideration of style.
Garden LED bulb or outdoor LED light: what changes
The bulb is the source, the lamp and its holder; the light is the complete unit, fixed and connected. For a durable outdoor installation, it is the light that carries the protection rating, not the bulb alone. The LED references bring both families together.
The criterion you regret forgetting: cable routing
A light with no power supply within a few metres becomes a building site. Locate the cable route before paving or planting, and look at the post-mounted garden lights and bollards when no route is possible.
| Area | Type of light | What the light brings | Point to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Path and walkway | Bollard, stake or ground-recessed spotlight | A string of low pools of light that guides without dazzling | Beam directed towards the ground, not the eyes |
| Terrace and outdoor lounge | Wall light, ceiling light under an awning or post lamp | Light close to that of the living room, to stay outside after the meal | Mounting height and no glare on the table |
| Facade and wall | Wall light or spotlight aimed at the wall | A wall wash that gives relief to stone and render | Beam kept away from neighbours' windows |
| Porch and entrance | Ceiling light or wall light with sensor | Clear light on arrival, off the rest of the time | IP rating and sensor range |
| Border, tree, pond | Stake spotlight or pond light | Volumes revealed from below, without frontal lighting | Distance to foliage and IP rating of the submerged part |
Outdoor LED light: warm white or neutral white?
Warm white, around 3000 K, gives a golden light that rests the eyes and brings out stone and plants; neutral white, around 4000 K, makes colours truer and secures a passage. For a garden, you usually stay below 3000 K, except in a work area.
Warm white for the terrace, neutral white for moving around
On a table where you dine, 2700 to 3000 K make skin and wood more flattering. On a staircase or a garage path, 4000 K signals steps better. A single temperature per area avoids the patchwork visible from the living room.
Avoiding cold white that turns vegetation blue
Above 5000 K, green foliage turns grey-blue and red flowers lose their depth. This very cold white, useful in a workshop, also hardens contrasts and tires the eyes faster in night vision. A selection of models rated IP65 shows in passing that protection and soft light go together.
Which IP rating should you choose for an LED garden light?
The IP rating indicates resistance to water and dust. In a garden, IP44 is enough under a sheltered awning, IP65 withstands water jets and driving rain, IP67 withstands temporary immersion. Near a pool or under automatic watering, go for IP65 minimum.
IP44, IP65, IP67: what the number really allows
The first digit concerns solids, the second liquids. An IP44 withstands fine rain and splashes, not a pressure washer jet. An IP65 withstands the jet, an IP67 brief immersion. To compare, the IP44-protected references and IP65 models share the same classification logic.
The weak link is not the light but the connection
An IP65 unit connected through an open junction box loses its protection. Place the connection above ground level, not at the lowest point, and close every box. A pond light also requires suitable protection on the circuit side, to be validated by a professional.
| IP rating | Withstands | Typical garden location | What not to do |
|---|---|---|---|
| IP44 | Splashes and fine rain | Under an awning or covered pergola | Expose it to a pressure washer jet |
| IP65 | Water jets and driving rain | Facade, terrace, poolside, watered area | Leave the connection exposed |
| IP67 | Temporary immersion | Pond light, flood-prone low point | Immerse a model that is only IP65 |
| IP20 or no IP | Nothing, dry indoor use | Keep for indoor use | Take the light outside, even under an awning |
Is LED light good for plants?
Yes: LED emits wavelengths used by photosynthesis and heats very little, so it does not burn foliage on contact like a halogen source. For a garden, it is mainly used for staging; the effect on growth depends on lighting duration and distance.
Choosing a suitable spectrum without turning the garden into a greenhouse
Warm white is enough for the atmosphere and remains usable by the plant. A dedicated horticultural spectrum, often pinkish, is only justified for container growing or a greenhouse, where growth is sought rather than looks. Recessed ground spots aimed at a trunk avoid bathing foliage in light.
Leaving some darkness for plants and insects
A light point left on all night disrupts nocturnal pollinators and blurs wildlife landmarks. A timer or sensor limits the duration, and a beam directed towards the ground rather than low branches preserves the rest of the borders.
Solar lamp or mains light: which to choose for the garden?
A solar lamp installs without cable and suits isolated points, provided the panel is exposed due south and you accept variable intensity depending on the season. A mains light gives constant light all year round and is controlled by switch or sensor, but requires a power supply nearby.
Solar: the three conditions for it to last
An unobstructed panel, at least six hours of direct sunlight, and regular cleaning of the glass. In winter, expect a clear drop in autonomy: a solar model complements lighting, it does not replace it all year. For a pond, nothing beats a connection; see the pond lights.
Mains: plan the power supply before terrace work
A conduit laid before paving costs less than a trench afterwards. 230 V requires circuit protection and a waterproof box at the head of the line. Around a pond, the terrace lighting around the pond should be planned with this supply, not after.
Where to install a powerful LED wall light or an outdoor LED ceiling light?
A wall light is fixed to a facade, at shoulder height or higher, to wash the wall and light a passage; an outdoor LED ceiling light is placed under an awning, a porch or a pergola, above the circulation area. In both cases, avoid directing the beam towards eyes or the street.
Fitting a powerful LED wall light on a facade
Allow 1.60 to 1.80 m from the ground for the usual installation, a little higher for a two-storey wall. Two lights spread out are better than a single one in the centre. A whole facade is handled with several points or a grazing spotlight, never with a beam aimed at the road.
Outdoor LED ceiling light: the right height under the awning
Under an awning, aim for 2.20 to 2.50 m above the ground: high enough not to dazzle, accessible enough for cleaning. A sensor model suits a rarely used entrance, continuous lighting a terrace used in the evening. For a utility room, compare with the garage panels and batten lights.
How to install and maintain an LED garden light?
First locate cable routes before planting, protect every outdoor connection in a waterproof box and aim the light before fixing it. Maintenance is limited to a soft cloth and a little soapy water, never abrasive products on aluminium or glass.
Routing the cable and protecting the connection
Locating, conduit, connection, aiming, fixing: in that order. The connection box is placed above ground, sheltered from rising water, and the residual current device is checked before the first power-up. Utility room or garage lighting follows the same logic, with a lower IP rating.
Cleaning without scratching aluminium or tempered glass
Soft cloth, warm soapy water, rinse and dry. Forget white vinegar and bicarbonate of soda, effective on raw wood but aggressive on painted finishes, aluminium and treated glass. Frosted glass is cleaned without rubbing, or it will leave marks.
How to match garden lighting with that of the house?
Keep the same family of whites, warm inside, a little softer outside, and avoid mixing several temperatures in the same view. The light visible from the bay window should stay discreet by day and consistent at night, like one more piece of furniture in the landscape.
Living room LED chandelier and large chandelier for high ceilings: the same white colour
A living room at 2700 K and a terrace at 3000 K respond to each other without a break. A large chandelier for high ceilings is also chosen for its volume seen from outside: too low, it blocks the view. Living room LED lighting serves as a reference, pendants and chandeliers provide the shapes.
Toilet light and original lights: use before looks
A toilet light first answers a short gesture and easy cleaning. A room with a unique design is chosen once the light is already set. The toilet light and the unique design pieces are compared on use, not on the photo.
Kitchen open to the terrace: extending kitchen decoration
When the bay window stays open in the evening, the kitchen light becomes the garden light. Whites and materials are then harmonised, without multiplying visible sources. See the kitchen decoration and the modern kitchen decor to avoid the contrast of a very white island facing a golden terrace.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best solar lamp for a garden?
There is no single model: the best solar lamp is the one whose panel stays exposed due south all day and whose intensity covers the intended use. For a path, low, diffuse light is enough; for a terrace, better to plan supplementary lighting.
How to choose a powerful LED ceiling light for outdoors?
First look at the IP rating, at least IP65 under an exposed awning, then the light colour, around 3000 K to stay warm. Power is chosen according to the area to be lit and the mounting height, not according to the highest figure on the data sheet.
Do you need an outdoor LED bulb or a garden LED bulb?
It is the same requirement: a bulb intended for outdoors must display an IP rating suited to its location, and the light receiving it must be closed if the bulb is not protected. The cap, E27 or GU10, must match the light's socket.
Can you install an indoor garden LED light?
Yes: a conservatory, a glass roof or a covered patio is treated like an indoor garden, with decorative lights that tolerate humidity. Keep a moderate IP rating and a warm light, close to that of the neighbouring room.
Where to find a lighting shop in Lyon?
The Designix selection is available online: each model shows its protection rating, colour temperature, mounting type and power supply, all points to compare before choosing. References remain available all year and can be compared with each other.
