Think of a linear light fixed to the ceiling, spread across several points rather than a single central fixture: that is what makes a garage readable on the floor and on the workbench. Then choose the length, colour temperature and ingress protection rating according to the actual humidity of the room.

Which LED garage strip light should you choose?

The collection includes 6 LED garage strip light references. To choose, compare the length of the tube or batten, the colour temperature and the ingress protection rating if the room is damp on each product page. Opt for a ceiling-mounted model with even light.

Powerful LED garage strip light: look at diffusion before watts

A very powerful fixture with poor diffusion dazzles and leaves shadow areas behind the car. Look at the beam shape: a wide, even tube lights better than a concentrated source. To compare two models, start from the luminous flux in lumens and the length, not just the wattage figure. The shop's indoor lighting solutions are read the same way, page by page.

LED fluorescent for garage: what are we really talking about?

LED fluorescent refers to a tube with a classic shape, designed to replace a fluorescent tube in an existing fitting. The LED strip light can be this tube, or a complete batten ready to install. The difference matters at the time of purchase: a tube slides into the old socket, a batten replaces the whole unit. Check this point before looking at our lighting catalogue.

How do you replace a strip light with LEDs?

Remove the old fluorescent tube, check the type of socket and existing wiring, then install a compatible LED tube. Depending on the model, the ballast or starter is kept, replaced or bypassed: follow the tube's instructions, and switch off the power at the circuit breaker before any handling.

Check the socket and wiring before dismantling

Switch off the circuit breaker, then remove the tube. Note the length and diameter of the housing, as well as the type of socket. A tube of a different length will not fit, and wiring modified for the old setup requires a check before restoring power. If the fitting is damaged, a new batten is often simpler to install than a repair.

Ballast and starter: what needs to be disconnected

Old fluorescent setups use a ballast, sometimes a starter. A LED tube compatible with a ballast installs directly; a so-called direct-wiring tube requires disconnecting the ballast according to the diagram in the instructions. Do not guess: the tube's datasheet indicates which of the two cases applies. If in doubt, have the connection checked before closing up.

What is the lighting standard for a garage?

There is no single imposed value for a private garage. For professional premises, workplace lighting standards set recommended levels according to the task and require avoiding glare. In both cases, aim for even light, with no shadow areas on the floor and no direct glare.

Private garage and professional garage: two requirements

At home, the criterion is use: seeing under the bonnet, reading a label, not searching for a tool. A premises that receives the public or employees follows a different, regulated logic. If your garage is part of a professional activity, have the applicable requirements verified by a lighting or prevention professional, rather than copying a value found online.

Avoid glare and shadow areas

A successful garage is not the brightest: it is the one where you do not squint. Direct the light downwards and towards the back of the room, keep fixtures away from the line of sight when working standing up, and cross two sources rather than one. Ceiling-mounted light fittings are chosen with this question in mind.

Which LED garage strip light for a damp or unheated garage?

In a damp, cold or dusty garage, the IP rating of the fixture matters more than its power. A high IP rating protects against water splashes and dust. Also check the operating temperature range indicated on the datasheet: some unheated premises drop below zero in winter.

Read the IP rating without making mistakes

The two digits of the IP rating are read in order: the first concerns solid bodies and dust, the second water. A fixture protected against splashes is not necessarily protected against immersion, and the reverse makes no sense in a garage. Above all, remember the second digit if your premises gets damp, and keep in mind that a bare model in a damp area is not a good calculation.

Unheated garage: check the temperature range

A premises separate from the house drops lower than a heated room. The product datasheet gives an operating range, and that is what decides: outside this range, starting may become unreliable or the lifespan may be reduced. Look at this point before comparing two models, and turn to light fittings for technical rooms when the premises is harsh.

How many LED strip lights to light a garage?

There is no standard number: start from the surface area, the ceiling height and what you need to see. A garage where you tinker requires more light than a storage room. Better to have several distributed light points than a single very powerful fixture in the centre.

Start from the surface area and ceiling height

Draw the floor plan, place the car, the workbench, the shelf and the passage to the door. A high ceiling requires either lowering the fixture or accepting more diffuse light. A room of about twenty square metres is generally covered with two or three well-placed points, but the height and colour of the walls change the equation: a dark wall absorbs a lot.

Distribute light points rather than concentrating them

Two fixtures on either side of the car light the sides, which a central fixture never does. Cross the lines: one row above the workbench, another along the passage. For a work premises, complete with light fittings for technical rooms if a corner remains dark.

Which linear lighting according to the premises
Premises Light sought Point to check Mistake to avoid
Closed and dry garage Even white on the ceiling Length of the fixture and mounting A single light point in the centre
Damp or unheated garage White, without reflection IP rating and temperature range Neglecting protection against humidity
DIY workshop Even light on the workbench Diffusion and positioning Glare when working under the fixture
Cellar and utility room Neutral white, immediate start Moisture resistance Choosing a bare model without protection
Garage with high ceiling Light that comes down without glare Suspension or mounting method Suspending too low in the passage
Kitchen Task light or decorative light Actual use of the room Confusing technical lighting and decoration

LED strip light, batten or floodlight: which light for which use?

All three give white light, but not in the same way: the LED strip light and the batten light wide and even, the floodlight concentrates and carries far. For a garage, a workshop or a cellar, linear ceiling light remains the most comfortable; the floodlight complements outdoors.

When a floodlight replaces the strip light

The floodlight takes over when the light must go outside: facade, driveway, in front of the gate, or a very large volume where a tube would seem weak. Indoors, it lights strongly on a narrow area and leaves the rest in the dark, which is tiring in the long run. Direct it towards the ground and not towards the neighbour's door.

Batten and LED strip light: what differences?

The batten is a complete unit, with its support and diffuser, ready to screw to the ceiling. The LED tube is for a fitting already in place. For a new installation, the batten avoids compatibility questions; for a replacement, the tube is often enough. Compare the two in the complete lighting range.

LED strip light, LED batten or LED floodlight
Solution Light shape Where it suits Point of vigilance
LED strip light tube Linear, wide and even Garage ceiling, workshop, cellar Compatibility with the existing socket
LED batten Linear, ready to install Garage, cupboard, utility room Length and mounting location
LED floodlight Concentrated, long reach Outdoors, facade, large volume Glare if poorly oriented
LED strip Low-profile, decorative Under-cabinet, niche, ambiance Limited reach for a large room

Can you install an LED strip light in a kitchen or a workshop?

Linear light suits work rooms: workshop, cellar, utility room, garage. In a kitchen, you look rather for a light fitting that contributes to the decoration: a bare batten on the ceiling lights but does not dress the room. The choice is therefore made on the actual use of the room as much as on power.

Workshop, cellar, utility room: the rooms that require linear light

These rooms have three things in common: you work standing up, you look for objects, and nobody comes for the decoration. A wide tube on the ceiling, complemented above the workbench, handles the essentials. For this type of premises, browse lighting a workshop or cellar and check the IP rating first of all.

Kitchen: prefer a light fitting that decorates

In a kitchen, task light and ambiance are treated separately. A strip light above the worktop is useful, but a modern kitchen decor goes through a pendant, a wall light or a ceiling light chosen for its line. Kitchen decoration is played out on these visible light fittings, not on a bare tube. To find the balance, see choosing a light fitting suited to each room.

How do you install and maintain an LED strip light on the ceiling?

An LED strip light is fixed to the ceiling with two brackets or clips, on a stable surface, within reach of a power supply. Switch off the power at the circuit breaker, respect the live and neutral markings, and check that the fixture is compatible with the humidity of the room. A dry cloth is then enough for maintenance.

Ceiling mounting and connection

First locate the position: above the passage, away from the line of sight when you work. Drill, plug according to the nature of the ceiling, then screw the brackets. The connection is made with the power off, with the wires identified one by one. If the existing circuit is old, have the line checked: this is the point that decides durability over time.

Cleaning and routine maintenance

A dry or slightly damp cloth on the diffuser, with the fixture switched off, is enough to keep the light output. Avoid abrasive products on polycarbonate and aluminium. A dust deposit on a tube is quickly visible: it is often what makes you think the power has dropped. To replace a tired fixture, consider switching to more recent LED lighting.

Frequently asked questions about LED strip lights for garage

Powerful LED garage strip light: which power to choose?

Wattage does not say everything: look at the light actually emitted and the way the fixture diffuses it. A well-diffused tube lights more comfortably than a more powerful but dazzling model. Length and number of light points count as much as the displayed power.

LED fluorescent for garage: is it the same as an LED strip light?

An LED fluorescent often refers to an LED tube designed to replace a classic fluorescent tube, with the same shape and length. The LED strip light, on the other hand, can be a complete tube or a batten ready to install. In both cases, check compatibility with the existing fitting.

Are there cheap LED garage strip lights?

Entry-level models suit a dry garage where little time is spent. If the premises is damp, unheated or used as a workshop, the price difference is justified by the ingress protection rating, the mounting and the quality of diffusion. Compare at equal use, not just on the display.

How many LED strip lights should be installed in a garage?

There is no standard number. Count the surface area, the ceiling height and the areas to be lit: worktop, workbench, passage to the door. Two distributed fixtures light better than a single very powerful one placed in the centre, which leaves dark corners and tires the eyes.

Can you put an LED strip light in a kitchen?

An LED strip light is installed in a kitchen if you mainly want to see clearly, for example above a worktop. But for a successful modern kitchen decor, you rather choose a light fitting that contributes to the decoration: pendant, wall light or ceiling light. A kitchen often requires both.
