There are three families of outdoor lighting on a terrace: a wall light or ceiling light fixed to the structure for the table and the walkway, a floor lamp or bollard placed on the ground where drilling is not possible, and recessed spots to mark steps and the pool edge. You choose first by use, then by protection rating and colour temperature.

What are the outdoor lighting options?

LED terrace lighting: the families to know

A wall light or ceiling light fixed to the structure plays the main role: it lights the table, the entrance or the covered walkway. A floor lamp or bollard takes over where there is no wall, at the corner of the terrace, and moves when the furniture changes. Recessed spots in the slab or the pool edge outline the steps and the boundaries of the ground without throwing light upwards. These families work very well together on the same terrace, and the LED lighting range shows their shape variants.

Outdoor LED lighting: what sets it apart from an indoor model

Three differences matter. Watertightness first: seals, cable glands and a closed diffuser keep water and insects out. Material next: aluminium, stainless steel, tempered glass or polycarbonate, chosen so it does not swell or discolour in damp conditions. UV treatment last, which stops white plastic turning yellow after two summers. An indoor model placed outside can tide you over for a season under a dry awning, but its seals wear out quickly. To get a sense of the styles, compare with all the home lighting.

Which IP rating should you choose for terrace lighting?

For a terrace, aim for at least IP44, which protects against water splashes and insects. IP65 also resists water jets, useful near a pool or under frequent watering. The rating says nothing about impact resistance: that is the IK number, often missing from product sheets.

IP44 or IP65: which for a covered terrace?

Under an awning or pergola, IP44 is enough in most cases: the light gets spray and condensation, not torrents of water. As soon as rain can reach it from the side, or if a watering jet regularly passes nearby, move up to IP65. The detail of these two levels is explained in IP44 watertightness explained and in what an IP65 protects against, valid for any outdoor light.

What the IP rating really protects

The first digit concerns solids, the second liquids. An IP65 accepts jets, never immersion: at the edge of a pool, take splashes and impacts into account. For diving or a very wet pool edge, only models designed for it will do, such as those gathered in pool lighting.

IP rating and terrace exposure
Exposure Recommended IP rating What this means
Covered terrace, under an awning IP44 Water splashes and insects
Semi-sheltered terrace, sideways rain IP44 to IP65 Splashes, then jets depending on the model
Open air, frequent watering IP65 Jets tolerated, not immersion
Pool edge, splashes IP65 minimum Also check impact resistance (IK)
Ground, step, very wet area IP67 Temporary immersion, dedicated models

Where should you install LED lights on a terrace?

Place the light above the areas in use, never in the line of sight: a ceiling light under the awning for the table, a wall light at around 1.80 m for the walkway, a floor lamp in the corner rather than in the centre. Ground spots mark the steps. One point every two to three metres is enough to read a terrace.

LED ceiling light for an outdoor terrace: under which awning?

The ceiling light is fixed at the highest point of the sheltered area, flat under the structure, so the light falls down onto the table. Check the clear height under the beam and the weight the support accepts: a wooden pergola or a light awning does not have the same load capacity as a slab. A pendant light for a conservatory works on the same principle, in a hanging version.

LED floor lamp for a terrace: how far from the table?

A floor lamp is placed a metre or two behind the seats, so it lights shoulders and ground without hitting faces. In a corner, it opens the terrace towards the garden. Compare heights and shapes in LED floor lamp for terrace. For a path or a gate, spots recessed into the slab and low bollards remain more discreet than a post.

What LED light for a terrace in the evening?

On a terrace, warm white light, around 2700 to 3000 K, keeps the evening mood without the bluish look of site lighting. Reserve neutral white, around 4000 K, for stairs, work areas and paths you want very easy to read. Better a few well-aimed sources than many points.

LED bulb for outdoor use: warm white or neutral white?

The rule is simple and can be checked on the packaging:

  • 2700 to 3000 K for a meal, relaxing, entertaining.
  • 4000 K for a staircase, a path, a gate.
  • Around 3000 K to highlight a flower bed or a tree trunk.

One temperature per area avoids patches of different colours on the same facade. The same logic applies indoors if you are looking to extend the light towards the living room.

Avoiding glare without losing visibility

A bare light point in the field of vision tires the eye more than it lights. Aim sources towards the ground or the wall, prefer a diffuser or frosted glass, and keep the lowest sources for paths. A benchmark: the light should be visible on the table and the ground, not on the bulb.

Wall light, ceiling light or floor lamp: which light for which use?

A wall light suits facade walls and small spaces, a ceiling light covers the table and sheltered areas, a floor lamp moves and stands where no fixing is possible. For a large area to light at once, choose a model with several light points rather than a single very powerful source.

Which LED light for which use on the terrace
Type of light Where to place it What it lights What to check
Wall light Facade wall, gable, low wall The walkway and entrance, in grazing light Mounting height and IP rating
Ceiling light Under the awning or pergola The table and the centre of the terrace Clear height and weight
Floor lamp Corner, near an armchair A relaxation area, with no fixing Stability in wind and cable length
Recessed spot Slab, pool edge, step Paths and relief Drainage and watertightness
Bollard or marker light Path edge, foot of a wall The ground, without glare Height and orientation
Pendant light Pergola, conservatory The table, in downward light Fixing and swaying

Powerful LED wall light: on which wall should it go?

The right wall is the one bordering the route, not the one facing the guests: a facade wall, a gable, a dividing low wall. Mounted at around 1.80 m, a wall light lights the walkway and entrance in grazing light. A single powerful wall light on a large white wall creates a harsh halo: better two more discreet wall lights. For the table itself, look instead at dining table lighting.

LED bulb for a terrace: what to check before buying

The base first (GU10 for spots, E27 for screw fittings), then compatibility with the light, then real use: under an awning, an ordinary LED bulb is enough; in the open air, better a model designed for damp and temperature swings. Watertightness comes from the light, not the bulb. Find the available references in the LED lighting catalogue.

How do you install an outdoor LED light?

Installation starts with the support: check the nature of the wall or ceiling and the position of the cable before drilling. The light is fixed to a connection box, seals in place, screws tightened without forcing. Switch off the power at the consumer unit, connect, then refit the diffuser and check watertightness.

LED ceiling light for outdoor use: step-by-step installation

Locate the cable entry, hold up the template, drill with plugs suited to the support, then screw on the base plate. The cable gland must stay at the bottom so water drains away. Connect the wires, refit the cover without pinching the seal, and test before switching the breaker back on.

230 V or 12 V connection: what changes

At 230 V, the light connects directly to the lighting circuit, protected like the rest of the installation. At 12 V, a transformer is needed: it must remain accessible and sheltered, in a dry room or box. 12 V simplifies ground spots and borders, but requires checking the transformer's total power. To light far from the terrace, the path to the garage follows the same rules.

How do you maintain outdoor LED lighting?

An outdoor light is cleaned twice a year, with warm soapy water and a soft cloth: never a pressure washer or abrasive product, which damage seals and surface treatment. On that occasion, check that the screws are tight and the diffuser seal is not cracked.

Cleaning an outdoor light without damaging the finish

Switch off the power, dust dry, then wipe with a damp cloth. On aluminium and stainless steel, dry immediately to avoid marks. Rust comes more often from standing water and fixings than from the material: choose screws of the same metal as the support and a model where water drains away.

What should you do if water gets into the light?

Switch off the power, remove the diffuser, empty and let it dry completely before refitting. Check the seal, the cable gland and the orientation of the housing. If the water returns, the cause is often a missing screw or a crushed seal. Under a dry awning, a bathroom light can tide you over for a season, but it will not last outdoors.

How do you coordinate several lights on a terrace?

Distribute the sources by use rather than lining them up: one for the table, one for moving around, one for plants or the wall. Keep the same finish family and the same colour temperature throughout, then vary the formats. This consistency shows more than the shape of each light taken separately.

One light per use rather than a row of points

A row of identical spots along a wall lights the facade, not the terrace. Start from the actions: sitting down, serving, walking, looking at the garden. Each action gets a point, and empty areas stay dark, which gives depth. The reasoning is the same as for modern kitchen decor, where each worktop has its own source.

Harmonising finishes with the facade and furniture

Black, anthracite grey or stainless steel blend into most facades; wood and beige warm up a light terrace. Two materials maximum, a single colour temperature. If you are looking for a piece that stands out, isolate it: one model among the original lights or one piece among the exceptional pieces is enough, the rest should stay discreet. The same rule applies to kitchen decoration, where a single strong object holds the room.

Frequently asked questions

Can you install a living room LED chandelier on a covered terrace?

Only if its protection rating matches the exposure: IP44 minimum under an awning, more in the open air. Also check the material of the support and the drops, sensitive to damp, and the ceiling fixing's load capacity. Otherwise, an outdoor wall light or ceiling light replaces the chandelier without risk.

Which powerful LED ceiling light is needed for a large terrace?

Two or three well-distributed ceiling lights are better than a single very powerful model, which creates a bright patch and harsh shadows. Look at the number of light points, the beam angle and the IP rating. The result is judged at table height, not at the ceiling.

Are plant lamps effective?

Horticultural lamps provide the spectrum useful for indoor growth. On a terrace, they are rarely used: daylight is enough for outdoor plants, and installed lighting is primarily aimed at people's comfort. To highlight a flower bed in the evening, a wide-beam spotlight is better suited.

How do you choose an outdoor LED light that will not rust?

Rust comes from standing water and fixings more than from the material. Choose an aluminium or stainless steel finish, screws of the same metal as the support, and a housing where water drains away. An IP65 protects against jets, not immersion: at the edge of a pool, take splashes into account.

Outdoor LED lighting: is a powerful source better, or several points?

Several low-power points are better than a single very strong source: the light is distributed, shadows soften and glare decreases. A single powerful source creates harsh contrast and leaves dark areas around it. Count one point per use, then adjust according to the surface.

Our advice for choosing
