Frequently asked questions

How do I choose the right light output?
Allow about 100 to 300 lumens per m²: about 150 lm/m² for a living room, about 350 for a kitchen. Each product page lists the lumens.
At what height should the light be installed?
Above a table: 70-85 cm from the tabletop; in a walkway: at least 2.10 m of clearance below the bulb.
What type of bulb?
Usually E27 or E14, sometimes GU10. Specified on each product page.
Compatible with LEDs and dimmers?
Yes, in most cases; for use with a dimmer, look for the “dimmable” mention.

An E27 spot light is a fixture that takes a screw-in bulb with the same base as most table lamps: the bulb can be replaced, and its colour temperature and brightness changed, without touching the fixture. This collection brings together recessed, clip-on and ceiling projector versions, in metal or in white and black finishes.

What is an E27 spot light and what light does it give?

An E27 spot light fixture is recognisable by its socket: a screw-in bulb fits into it, just like on a bedside lamp. That is what sets it apart from an integrated LED spot, whose module is sealed. In practice, the light you get depends on the bulb you choose: a bulb at around 2700 K gives a warm white, around 4000 K a neutral white, and beyond that a cooler rendering. The fixture itself stays in place.

E27 spot light bulbs: what type of bulb should go inside?

The four main families of bulbs are incandescent, halogen, compact fluorescent and LED. Not all of them come in E27, and not all accept a dimmer. For a spot light, the main hesitation is between an LED and a halogen, depending on the rendering you want. Check the maximum wattage allowed by the fixture, shown on its label: a bulb that draws too much heats up and wears out the socket. On the LED side, quality varies a lot: some flicker or render colours poorly, and their purchase price remains higher than a classic bulb.

Why choose a bulb-based spot light rather than an integrated LED spot?

Because the light is never fixed. A bulb that weakens is replaced in seconds, without dismantling the fixture or redoing the cut-out. You can also switch from a warm white to a more neutral white if the room changes use. The trade-off is bulk: an E27 bulb takes up space behind the trim, which matters on a low ceiling. An integrated LED module heats less at comparable brightness, but still releases heat from the back; loft insulation must not be allowed to press against it.

How should spot lights be laid out on the ceiling?

Spot lights are distributed according to the areas to be lit rather than following a fixed number. Start with the places where something happens: worktop, table, reading corner. Then align the points on the axis of the furniture, and fill in the centre only if the room stays dark. A ceiling filled with evenly spaced points often lights less well than a set designed around how the room is used.

What spacing should be allowed between two E27 spot lights?

There is no single distance: it depends on the beam diameter of the bulb, the ceiling height and the surface area. In general, the gap between two points is kept comparable to the one separating them from the wall, to avoid a dark band around the edge. On a recessed spot light, an E27 bulb requires a wider cut-out than an integrated LED model: it is better to measure the real bulk before drilling.

Should spot lights be aimed at a wall or at the floor?

At the floor to light a working area, at the wall to light a surface without glare. An adjustable spot aimed at a light-coloured wall bounces back a soft light and visually enlarges the room, which is what white adjustable spots placed around the edge are for. A spot pointing straight along the axis of an armchair, on the other hand, creates discomfort: move it rather than lowering the brightness. For a narrow passage, hallway models only need regular marker lighting.

How many spot lights in a kitchen?

The number depends on the surface area, the ceiling height and where you cook. Light the worktop, the sink and the preparation areas first, then add more for atmosphere. Several discreet points are better than a single source in the centre: that one drops your shadow exactly on the chopping board.

How many points above a worktop?

Enough that your silhouette is not cast onto the worktop when you stand facing the unit. The simplest method is to place the points slightly in front of the worktop line, not just behind your head. If the ceiling is low, a recessed model saves space; among kitchen recessed spots, fixed versions are enough above a linear worktop. For a more elaborate look, modern kitchen spots play on the finish as much as on the light.

Can you mix E27 spot lights and a pendant in a kitchen?

Yes, and it is often the right answer: the pendant above the table or island for atmosphere, the spot lights for work. Keep a consistent colour temperature between the two, otherwise the difference is immediately visible. The mix also works in a large living room: take a look at LED spots for the kitchen and solutions designed for the living room to match the two areas.

How do you wire spot lights in series or in parallel?

In parallel, each spot stays independent: if one fails, the others keep working, and this is the usual wiring in homes. In series, the fixtures share the same circuit and go out together. The connection must follow the instructions and be carried out with the power off, breaker switched off.

Series or parallel: which should you choose for spot lights?

Parallel, in almost every case. It lets you switch off or replace one point without cutting power to the others, and it simplifies fault-finding. Series wiring is reserved for special uses and is rarely found in domestic lighting. If you are unsure about the existing circuit, call an electrician: the cable cross-section and the protection of the circuit cannot be guessed.

Can several spot lights be connected to the same switch?

Yes, that is the most common case: several fixtures controlled together from a single switch. In that case, respect the terminal block of each spot, tighten the connections properly and do not crush the cable under the insulation, because overheating almost always comes from insufficient tightening or from a covered fixture. A class II fixture is protected by double insulation and has no earth terminal; a class I model, often in metal, must on the contrary be earthed. The product label decides, not habit.

Recessed, clip-on or projector E27 spot light: which version should you choose?

The recessed spot light is fitted into a false ceiling and stays discreet; the clip-on spot fixes to a shelf or a post and can be moved; the ceiling projector, surface-mounted, lights widely without a large cut-out. The choice depends mainly on your ceiling finish and the freedom you want to keep.

Which E27 spot light for which room
Room Type of E27 spot light What you are looking for Point to check
Kitchen Recessed fixed or adjustable Light the worktop and sink without cast shadow Clearance behind the bulb under the unit
Living room Recessed or ceiling projector Ambient lighting, dimming possible Position relative to the sofa and number of points
Hallway Recessed or E27 bulkhead Mark the passage without glare Regular spacing and hallway width
Bedroom Recessed adjustable or clip-on Light a wall or read without direct light Spot orientation and adjustable brightness
Outdoors Projector or sealed E27 bulkhead Light an entrance or a terrace Fixture IP rating and suitable bulb

Recessed E27 spot light: what needs to be planned in the ceiling

Three things: the cut-out, the depth and the cable route. The cut-out is the hole in the ceiling, not to be confused with the trim visible once the spot is in place. The depth must accommodate the bulb and its base, which takes more room than a flat LED module. Also allow clearance above, especially under an insulated ceiling. For a living room, recessed spots for the living room and white recessed spots blend into a light-coloured ceiling.

Clip-on E27 spot light: what should you choose it for?

Anywhere drilling makes no sense: a rented worktop, a shelf, a desk, a workshop post. Its E27 socket takes the same bulb as your other fixtures, and it moves with how you use it. In a bedroom, it replaces a bedside lamp without taking up the nightstand; spots specially for the bedroom group together the formats that suit it. Its limit remains the nearby socket.

Outdoor E27 spot light: how to light outside and which IP rating?

For outdoors, choose a suitable E27 bulb and a fixture whose IP rating matches the exposure: IP44 at minimum under a canopy, more if the spot is exposed to rain. A sealed housing protects the socket, and the connection is made on a protected circuit, never on a simple extension lead.

IP44 E27 spot light: for which location?

IP44 means protection against water spray, not against immersion. It is suitable under a canopy, against a sheltered facade, under a porch. For a truly exposed terrace, you need to go up a level and check the rating on the fixture's data sheet rather than trusting appearances. No rating removes the need for careful installation: a badly refitted gasket lets water in just as surely as no gasket at all.

Can an ordinary E27 bulb be used outside?

That depends on the bulb and on the fixture housing it. In a sealed, protected housing, a standard bulb may be suitable, but the socket remains the sensitive point: damp causes corrosion there. A bulb designed for outdoor use copes better with temperature swings. The subject cannot be handled on its own: first compare metal spots, whose sealed housings protect the socket better, and check the rating given for each reference.

Dimmable E27 spot light: how do you vary the light?

An E27 spot becomes dimmable if the bulb and the dimmer are compatible: a dimmable bulb on a dimmer designed for LEDs, or a classic bulb on a suitable dimmer. Pairing an old dimmer with an LED bulb often causes flickering, buzzing or cut-out, hence the importance of reading both sets of instructions before buying.

Dimmable E27 spot light: how do you check compatibility?

Look for the words "dimmable" on the bulb packaging, then for the compatibility stated by the dimmer, often expressed for a type of load. If either piece of information is missing, consider that dimming is not guaranteed. Total wattage also matters: under too low a load, some dimmers drop out. Dimmer-compatible spots and LED dimming solutions gather the relevant models.

Can a spot be made dimmable without changing the switch?

Yes, with a connected bulb or a bulb whose brightness is adjusted by its own device. You then keep the wall switch for on and off, and dimming is controlled another way. The solution avoids redoing the wiring, but it depends on the quality of the bulb: it is the same freedom the E27 socket gives, and the same need to check what is claimed.

What are the different spot lights and how do you match them to the room?

Spot lights are classified by fixing, by orientation and by finish: recessed or surface-mounted, fixed or adjustable, in metal, white or black. They are matched by keeping the same colour family and a consistent temperature within a room, and by reserving adjustable models for areas that need precise lighting.

Colours and materials: the effect in the room
Finish Effect in the room Where it works best To pair with
White Discreet, the spot blends into the ceiling Light rooms, small spaces White ceilings and light joinery
Black The spot stands out and structures the ceiling Contemporary interiors, dark ceilings Dark joinery and hardware
Metal Adds visible material without a strong colour Kitchens, entrances, rooms with character Taps and handles in the same tone
Design and modern The fixture plays a part in the decor Living rooms and living spaces A single family of shapes per room

White or black E27 spot light: which should you choose?

White fades away, black shows. On a white ceiling, white finishes almost disappear and leave the light alone on show. On a dark ceiling or black joinery, black finishes draw a clean line and avoid a pale patch in the middle of the surface. Neither lights better: it is a question of how the ceiling reads visually.

How do you match several spot lights in the same room?

By limiting the number of families. A single finish tone per room, a single colour temperature for all bulbs, and shapes that echo each other. Reserve adjustable models for the places that need fine-tuning; for the rest, a fixed version is enough and stays more discreet. If you want a deliberate statement, design models and the modern style pair well together. For continuity throughout the house, browse all our light fixtures before making your choice.

Once the finish and layout are settled, note the cut-out and depth of each spot before ordering, and check the compatibility of your bulbs. The collection grid shows the current price of each reference.

Frequently asked questions about E27 spot lights

What are the different spot lights?

A distinction is made between recessed spots, which sit flush with the ceiling, surface-mounted spots or ceiling projectors, clip-on spots and bulkheads for passages. Each comes in a fixed or adjustable version, in white or black, and in a version with an interchangeable E27 socket.

What is the diameter of a recessed spot light?

It depends on the model: distinguish the visible trim from the cut-out to be made in the ceiling. On an E27 socket spot, the bulk is greater than on an integrated LED spot, because the bulb takes up room behind. Measure both values before drilling.

Do LED spot lights heat up?

An LED heats less than a halogen bulb at comparable brightness, but its module and driver still release heat. On a recessed spot, this heat escapes from the back: loft insulation must not be allowed to press against the fixture.

What are the drawbacks of LED bulbs?

The purchase price remains higher than that of a classic bulb, and quality varies widely from one model to another: some flicker or render colours poorly. They are also sensitive to heat and often require a dimmer compatible with their electronics.

What is the fire risk associated with installing spot lights?

The risk rarely comes from the bulb and almost always from the installation: loose connections, undersized cable, fixture covered with insulation or unsuitable dimmer. Following the instructions, tightening the terminal block correctly and having an electrician handle the circuit limit this risk.

Why no earth on an LED spot light?

A class II fixture is protected by double insulation: it has no earth terminal. A class I fixture, often in metal, must on the contrary be earthed. It is the class shown on the product label that determines the connection.

Which is the most powerful LED?

Power is read in lumens rather than watts: two bulbs with the same consumption can light very differently. A high-flux LED draws more and heats more, so you must check that it fits inside the fixture and that the fixture accepts that wattage. Then compare see the whole range to find the format suited to your room.
