Start by choosing the area to light, then the type of installation: a terrace calls for low, diffuse light, a path for regular bollards, a facade for a wall light or an adjustable spotlight. Material and protection rating come next, depending on exposure to rain and watering.

Which designer outdoor lighting should you choose for each area?

Start with the area: a terrace is lit with low, diffuse light to illuminate without glare, a path with regular bollards, a flower bed with grazing light directed at the foliage, a facade with a wall light or an adjustable spotlight. The same lamp does not suit all four places.

Designer outdoor lamps: the terrace and dining area

In the evening, the terrace becomes another room: you want to read, dine and stay there without having the source in your eyes. Choose a low bollard or a small floor lamp placed away from the walkway, and add a wall light aimed at the wall rather than at the guests. The useful reference remains the protection rating: IP44 is enough under a canopy, move up to IP65 if rain reaches the fixture. The designer outdoor lighting range brings together models designed for this kind of seating.

Outdoor garden lights: paths, beds and facade

For a path, generally allow one bollard every two to three metres, set 40 or 60 cm above the ground to stay clear of the walkway and light the surface. For a bed, an adjustable spotlight placed on the ground shapes the foliage from below. Bollards and floor lights can be installed without major work, while recessed ground spots require planning at the time of the works.

Area Type of fixture Recommended IP rating Point to check
Covered terrace or canopy Pendant, wall light, outdoor ceiling light IP44 Clear height above the table
Open terrace and dining area Low bollard, floor light, wall light IP44 to IP65 Direction to avoid glare
Path and walkway Bollards and low markers IP65 Regular spacing, height clear of the walkway
Bed, lawn, tree Adjustable spotlight, recessed spot IP65 Beam directed at the foliage, not at the house
Facade and entrance Wall light, wall spotlight IP65 Sound mounting surface and installation height
Poolside Watertight fixture dedicated to the pool IP65 Distance to the pool and water compatibility

What kind of light does a garden fixture give in the evening?

A garden fixture gives two types of light: low and diffuse when the source is hidden by a diffuser or placed near the ground, directed and contrasted when the socket is adjustable. The first makes a terrace comfortable, the second highlights a trunk, a facade or a relief.

Pendant or designer chandelier under a canopy: what precautions?

A canopy protects against direct rain, not against sideways splashes or wind: aim for at least IP44 and check that the fixture withstands humidity. Allow about 70 to 80 cm between the bottom of the fixture and the table top, and never hang it over a circulation area. Pendants for use under a canopy are also chosen for their silhouette seen from the living room.

Spotlights and grazing light: directing without glare

Grazing light works when the source stays lower than the eye and the beam runs towards the wall, the hedge or the ground. A spotlight aimed at the house or the street tires the eyes and lights up the neighbour's property. Around a pool, watertightness comes before effect: see the lighting around the pool before choosing a model.

Which material and IP rating for a fixture that stays outside?

The IP rating indicates protection against dust and water: IP44 for sheltered use under a canopy, IP65 for a fixture exposed to rain or watering. The material matters just as much: aluminium and stainless steel withstand the weather better than untreated wood.

IP44 or IP65: how to read a protection rating?

The first digit concerns solids, the second water. IP44 covers splashes, IP65 water jets. A bollard at the edge of a watered lawn, a facade fixture exposed to driving rain or a model near a pool therefore fall under the second. The rest of the Designix lighting catalogue is read with the same grid.

Aluminium, stainless steel, resin or wood: what each material changes

This collection contains 2 models. The choice is based on the body material, the IP rating, the socket, the overall dimensions and the weight given on each product page. Exceptional models are also read according to exposure and planned maintenance.

How to match garden fixtures with the interior decoration?

Keep a thread between inside and outside: the same family of materials, a discreet housing, the same warm light from one room to the next. From a picture window, a garden fixture is seen together with the living room or kitchen, so it is better to avoid an isolated style.

Extending the kitchen and living room decoration outdoors

If the terrace table extends an open kitchen with clean lines, stay with black, grey or sand aluminium: it is the same vocabulary as the kitchen decoration. A modern kitchen decor struggles with an overly busy outdoor fixture right behind the glass. For continuity of shades, also look at the coherence with the living room.

Original fixtures: dare to have one piece that stands out

A garden can take one strong piece, not five. Choose a single point that stands out, a graphic wall light or a marked volume, and keep the rest sober so the light remains readable. Pieces with a unique design work well at the end of a terrace or on a bare wall.

LED or halogen design for outdoors?

LED consumes little, heats little and comes in several whites, which makes it more flexible for a garden. Halogen gives a warm light but heats more and requires a suitable fixture. The real criterion remains the socket: E27, GU10 or a non-replaceable integrated LED source.

What colour temperature changes in the evening

Around 2700 to 3000 kelvins, the white is warm and suits a terrace where you dine. A more neutral white, around 4000 kelvins, makes a path or an entrance more readable. Avoid mixing the two on the same wall. LED lighting gives shade references that can be transposed outdoors.

E27, GU10 or integrated LED socket: what it implies

The E27 socket accepts large globes and lets you choose power and shade. GU10 is compact and often more directional, to be reserved for targeted beams. An integrated LED cannot be replaced: keep this in mind when the fixture is hard to access. Check compatibility before replacing a bulb, including on models compatible with a pool.

Source Socket What it implies To check
Integrated LED None, fixed source No bulb replacement Module designed for outdoor use
LED bulb E27 Choice of shade and power Fixture volume and globe watertightness
LED bulb GU10 Compact format, often more direct beam Beam angle and socket orientation
Halogen E27 or GU10 Warm light, heats more Compatibility of the fixture and socket

How to install a garden fixture without getting it wrong?

A model to fix on an existing support or to plug into a protected outdoor socket can be installed without major work. As soon as a buried cable has to be run or a connection made to the consumer unit, an electrician is preferable. Before any drilling: switch off the power and check the watertightness of the connections.

Connection and watertightness: checks before plugging in

Check the cable gland, the cable clamp and the cover seal: that is where water gets in. A terminal block left in the open does not last the season. If the wall is hollow or cracked, the support must be repaired before fixing, otherwise the fixture moves and the seal works loose.

Height and spacing: placing a bollard without over-rhythming

A bollard is generally set between 40 and 60 cm above the ground, clear of the walkway, with regular spacing of two to three metres. Too close together, they turn the path into a runway; too far apart, they leave black holes. Keep the same height logic as for the dining table light: light the useful surface, not the eyes.

How to maintain designer outdoor lighting?

A soft cloth and soapy water are enough on aluminium and glass. Avoid abrasive products, check the seals and clear the leaves around the bollards. In very cold areas, a detachable fixture is easier to store during winter.

Cleaning without damaging the finish

No steel wool or aggressive glass cleaner on a powder coating: the finish layer protects the metal, a scratch opens it. Rinse with clean water, dry, and leave the fixture closed during cleaning so as not to wet the terminal block.

What to check when the season changes

In autumn, clear leaves and soil accumulated around the bollards, otherwise humidity stagnates. Check the seals, tighten the fixing screws and test the lighting. A decorative piece such as those in the deep green finishes range is cleaned the same way, without solvent.

Where to buy designer outdoor lighting and what to check first?

Before buying, check four lines of the product page: dimensions, material, IP rating and type of source. A photo alone does not show the real size. A clearance or end-of-line item can be interesting provided the protection and socket match the installation area.

Clearance and end-of-line: what to check

A lighting clearance Lyon or an end-of-line item attracts by price, but the essentials lie elsewhere: the stated protection, the available socket and the presence of original fixings. A model without instructions or spare seal is hard to repair. Also check the real colour of the housing on beige and sand shades, often different from one screen to another.

The four pieces of information to read before ordering

Overall dimensions, body material, IP rating, source and socket. Add the weight for a floor model, which must withstand the wind. If one of these lines is missing, ask for it: it is the best way to avoid a return.

Secure payment, tracked delivery, returns provided for and Designix customer service reachable before and after the order: you can ask your questions about the dimensions, material or use of a fixture before confirming. Browse our selection of lighting to compare models area by area, then check each technical page before ordering.

Frequently asked questions

Designer outdoor lamps: how to avoid glare?

Install the source lower than the eye, direct it at a wall, a hedge or the ground, and choose a diffuser that softens the light. Avoiding placing a light point facing the terrace or the living room window is often enough to make the garden comfortable in the evening.

Can you install a designer garden fixture yourself?

A model to plug into a protected outdoor socket or to fix on an existing support can be installed without major work. As soon as a buried cable has to be run or a connection made to the consumer unit, an electrician is preferable. Check the instructions, the watertightness of the connections and switch off the power.

How to maintain designer outdoor lighting?

A soft cloth and soapy water are enough for the fixture body. Avoid abrasive products on aluminium and glass, check the seals and remove leaves and soil accumulated around the bollards. In very cold areas, a detachable model is easier to store for winter.

Where to find original garden lighting?

The collections dedicated to pieces with a unique design bring together shapes that depart from the standard model: graphic volumes, plays of materials, marked shades. Compare size, material and protection rating before choosing, then check that the style works with the facade and the furniture already in place.

What does Designix customer service include?

Payment is secure, delivery is tracked and returns are provided for if the model does not suit. Designix customer service answers questions about the dimensions, material or use of a fixture before and after the order, which avoids mistakes on a technical product.
