Start with the height of the stem: 160 to 180 cm places the light at sofa level, 100 cm is enough on a terrace, 61 cm lights a sideboard. A column floor lamp is then decided by the socket and the protection rating, with style coming last.
What is a column floor lamp and what light does it give in a living room?
A column floor lamp is a floor lamp whose narrow vertical stem carries the light along its full height. It shines upwards, downwards or diffuses sideways, with an integrated LED or with an E14, E27 or GX53 bulb, and stands near a sofa or in a corner.
Three light effects depending on the stem
The column does not give the same mood depending on how the source is housed. The light strip of the Alset Bois floor lamp casts a vertical, even light onto a wooden panel, in neutral white 3500 to 4500 K: a crisp, readable light that suits a desk corner or a bright living room. The Sorvesano stacks fluted glass globes on a golden stem and diffuses warm white 2700 to 3500 K, more enveloping, with no dazzling point. The Look Noir, a slim 180 cm black tube in warm white, draws a discreet line and sends the light up the wall.
The shaded column, for low light
Two silhouettes in the selection bring the source down into a shade: Empilata, a 174 cm column of glass balls with an E27 socket, and Nolano, a 165 cm crystal column under a 50 cm shade. The light gathers at eye and coffee table level, which suits a reading corner. The rest of the choice is made in our floor lamp department and more broadly in the Designix lighting catalogue.
Column floor lamp for the living room: which height for which room?
The height of the stem decides the use: a 60 to 80 cm column lights a sideboard or a low terrace, a 100 cm column stays discreet outdoors, and a 160 to 180 cm model places the light at sofa level. Check the stability of the base and the floor space.
| Stem height | Models in the collection | Room and use | What to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| About 61 cm | Mendoza Argenté | Office, hallway, living room sideboard | Transparent bubble column, LED |
| 80 cm | Zendoraro, Sordoreno | Terrace, outdoors | GX53 socket, 10 W max, dimmer |
| 100 cm | Elenora, Estriva | Outdoors, terrace | IP54, 9 W LED |
| 123 cm | Alset Bois | Living room | Light strip, 3500 to 4500 K |
| 160 to 165 cm | Quercia, Cipriana, Sebastiana, Nolano | Living room, bedroom | Quercia with dimmer, Cipriana and Sebastiana in E14 |
| 170 to 180 cm | Venta, Venta Noir, Look Noir, Empilata | Living room, office | Floor base and ceiling height |
Column floor lamp 120 cm or 170 cm: where to place it?
A 123 cm column such as Alset Bois reaches under the arm of a sofa: it lights the backrest and the wall behind, without towering over heads. A 170 to 180 cm column, such as the Venta floor lamp and its touch button, lights further and acts as a vertical marker in a large living room. For a first living room floor lamp purchase, measure the gap between the furniture and the wall before deciding.
Designer column floor lamp: silhouette before dimensions
At a comparable height, the floor footprint changes everything. Sorvesano fits within 25 cm in diameter, Venta within a square base of 24 by 18 cm, while Empilata takes up 50 by 50 cm and is treated as a volume piece. A narrow stem slips into a corner without blocking the way, a wide base needs clearance. The boldly drawn models and the design pieces for the living room play on this balance between slenderness and presence.
How to choose between a column, a globe floor lamp and a classic floor lamp?
A column is a narrow stem, sometimes a tube, that diffuses along its full height. The globe floor lamp concentrates the light in a sphere, often in glass. The classic floor lamp combines a foot and a shade. Crystal or stacked-globe columns play the decorative card.
Globe floor lamp or column of globes: what is the difference on the floor?
The globe floor lamp sets a single luminous sphere at table or sofa height and serves as a side light. The stacked-globe column raises the light in tiers: Empilata is the example with its glass balls over 174 cm, and Cipriana takes up the principle in a crystal cascade at 160 cm high and 40 cm in diameter. The globe floor lamp family remains the right reflex for a hallway or a reading corner; the light of glass and crystal for a living room you want to dress in the evening.
Classic floor lamp: when to prefer it to a column?
The classic foot with a shade channels the light downwards and suits seated reading, while the column lights more widely. If you are looking for a stable vertical marker, a slim metal or aluminium stem is easier to move than a wide foot. The floor lamps bring these two approaches together, including the dimmable models that lower the intensity in the evening.
Wood, metal or glass column floor lamp: which material to choose?
Metal and aluminium give a slim, stable stem, suited to the living room and the office. Wood, in vertical slats or as a luminous panel, warms the light for a bedroom. Glass, fluted or clear, diffuses softly. Resin and plastic suit terrace models.
Wood column floor lamp: vertical slats or light strip?
The Quercia assembles a vertical-slat metal stem over 162 cm, in warm or cool white depending on the setting, with a dimmer. The wood effect warms a living room without adding a rustic piece. Alset Bois, for its part, shows a continuous light strip that gives a more graphic light. For driftwood collected by the sea, keep a single raw piece per corner: it works better with a black column or a light stem than with a second natural element. See the wooden floor lamps.
Fabric or fluted glass column floor lamp: what effect in the evening?
The fluted glass of Sorvesano breaks up the light and softens it, without dazzling when you are seated. The crystal of Livsamisto and Cipriana catches reflections and sparkles, which is most noticeable in a dimly lit room. Black metal or silver aluminium, finally, reflects a crisper light. Compare the metal stems, the black columns and the golden finishes depending on the warmth you want.
Outdoor column floor lamp: which IP protection rating to choose?
Outdoors, the protection rating matters more than style: IP54 protects against dust and water splashes, which is enough under an awning or on a covered terrace. IP65 resists water jets. An IP20 model is for indoor use only, even on a sheltered balcony.
IP54 or IP65: what it changes under an awning
IP54 covers dust and splashes: this is the level of the Elenora outdoor floor lamp and the Estriva, two 100 cm aluminium columns with a 9 W LED, one grey in neutral white, the other white in warm white. IP65 adds resistance to water jets, useful for a very exposed terrace or hose cleaning. Zendoraro and Sordoreno, in GX53 and 80 cm, do not state a rating: do not install them fully exposed without checking the spec sheet.
Outdoor column floor lamp: which height for a terrace?
Around 80 to 100 cm, the column lights a coffee table or a low wall without dazzling seated guests. Beyond that, it becomes a high point that lights the facade. Place it away from walkways and away from the edge of the terrace. The rest of the choice is read in the white models and the light variants for the living room when the column stays indoors.
Bedroom, office or WC floor lamp: where to place a column floor lamp?
A column floor lamp goes where the floor is clear: near a sofa, in the corner of a bedroom, along a desk. In a WC or a hallway, a narrow stem of small diameter passes without blocking circulation, provided it stays away from a water point.
Adult bedroom floor lamp: which light for the evening?
In a bedroom, aim for warm white 2700 to 3500 K and, if possible, a dimmer: Quercia, Sorvesano, Look Noir and Livsamisto are in this range. A stem of 20 to 25 cm in diameter finds its place near the headboard without blocking the way. The bedroom floor lamps and the adult models bring these silhouettes together.
WC or small hallway floor lamp: which narrow model to choose?
For a WC floor lamp or a hallway, the floor width comes first: Mendoza fits within 24.6 cm wide for 61 cm high, Alset Bois within 20.5 cm. A low stem avoids knocking the shade when passing and lights the floor. Keep the fixture away from a water point and choose an IP20 model only in a dry room. For work, the office columns and the modern lines for the living room complete the choice.
Halogen or LED floor lamp: which socket for a column floor lamp?
A column floor lamp with integrated LED needs no bulb and imposes its colour temperature. A model with an E14, E27 or GX53 socket is chosen according to the bulb you want to screw in, including a halogen bulb in E27, more energy-hungry and hotter to the touch than an LED.
| Socket | Bulb to provide | Models concerned | Intensity control |
|---|---|---|---|
| Integrated LED | None | Quercia, Sorvesano, Look Noir, Venta, Venta Noir, Alset Bois, Elenora, Estriva, Mendoza | Dimmer on Quercia, Look Noir, Venta and Venta Noir |
| E27 | One E27 bulb | Empilata, Nolano | Depending on the bulb chosen |
| E14 | One E14 bulb | Livsamisto, Cipriana, Sebastiana | Depending on the bulb chosen |
| GX53 | One GX53 bulb | Zendoraro, Sordoreno | Dimmer |
Integrated LED or screw-in bulb: what it changes
With an integrated LED, the power is fixed, for example 33 W for Sorvesano or 31 W for Venta, and you do not change the colour temperature. With an E27 or E14 socket, you adjust the bulb, including switching from a halogen to an LED of the same socket. The GX53 of the terrace columns remains a compact screw-in format. See the LED lighting for the living room.
Colour temperature: warm, neutral or cool white
Warm white 2700 to 3500 K dominates the selection and suits the evening. Neutral white 3500 to 4500 K, chosen by Alset Bois and Elenora, gives a crisper light for reading or working. Cool white 4500 to 6500 K is reserved for outdoors and circulation areas. The modern-style columns and the contemporary lines read well in these three moods.
How to install and maintain a column floor lamp?
A column floor lamp plugs into a wall socket and is stabilised by its base, often square or weighted. Place it a few centimetres from a wall, away from walkways, and check that the cable does not cross a walking area. A soft cloth is enough for metal, glass and crystal.
Where to plug in and how to stabilise a tall floor lamp stem?
A 170 to 180 cm floor lamp stem tips over more easily than a low column: place it on a flat floor, base against the wall, and run the cable along the skirting board. Avoid thick rugs under the base. On a floating floor, a felt pad protects the plank. An industrial-style floor lamp or a black living room column is treated the same way.
How to clean glass, crystal and aluminium?
Dust the fluted glass globes and crystal pendants dry, then wipe with a slightly damp microfibre cloth without abrasive product. Aluminium and metal are cleaned with a soft cloth, without a scouring sponge. Cut the power before handling any bulb. For the wooden stems, a dry cloth is enough.

Frequently asked questions
What are the different types of floor lamps?
There is the column floor lamp, with a narrow vertical stem, the globe floor lamp, the shaded floor lamp, the reading lamp, the arc floor lamp and the outdoor floor lamp. Each changes the direction of the light: upwards, in a globe, under a shade or in a side halo.
What are the trends for floor lamps in 2026?
In this selection, slim metal or aluminium columns dominate, with integrated LED in warm white 2700 to 3500 K and a dimmer on several models. Golden and silver finishes sit alongside matte black, and IP54 outdoor versions complete the range.
How to choose a floor lamp for an original living room?
Look for a silhouette that breaks away from the simple tube: a column of fluted glass globes, a crystal cascade, a transparent bubble column or a vertical-slat stem. Warm light and a dimmer make it possible to move from a side-light mood to wider lighting in the evening.
Which column floor lamp to choose for a bedroom?
In a bedroom, a column in warm white 2700 to 3500 K and a dimmer avoid glare before bedtime. A narrow stem finds its place near the headboard or in the corner, and a crystal or shaded model softens the light.
Does a halogen floor lamp use more than an LED floor lamp?
At comparable light output, a halogen bulb needs more power than an LED and heats up more to the touch. On a column floor lamp with an E27 or E14 socket, you can replace it with an LED of the same socket. Models with integrated LED do not accept any different bulb.
