A 220V motion sensor LED strip light connects directly to the mains and switches on by itself when someone walks past, with no switch and no battery. There are four things to consider when choosing one: the length of the profile, the colour temperature, the protection rating and the sensor settings.

What is a 220V motion sensor LED strip light?

It is a flat lighting profile, usually made of aluminium or rigid plastic, housing the LEDs, the driver and a passive infrared sensor. The 220V supply goes straight to the terminal block: no external transformer, no battery. The sensor detects a moving heat source, switches the light on, then cuts it after an adjustable delay. The motion sensor strip light therefore replaces the switch wherever you walk through with your hands full.

220V motion sensor LED strip light: what the sensor changes day to day

You walk into a garage or a cellar without hunting for the button, and the light goes out by itself behind you. The saving is not only electrical: it is one less gesture, every time you pass.

Motion sensor LED strip light: mains or battery?

A mains model never runs out of charge and copes with heavy use. Rechargeable strips, on the other hand, install without wiring but need regular recharging. To discover the other profiles, see the strips powered directly from the mains.

How can I power an LED on 220 volts?

The mains supplies alternating current; a driver, housed inside the strip profile, converts it into low-voltage direct current for the LEDs. The mains connection for a LED strip is made at the terminal block, on live and neutral, sometimes with earth depending on the model. Switch off the breaker, check that there is no voltage before touching the wires, and hand the connection to an electrician at the slightest doubt: this is not a job to improvise, it is basic precaution.

Connecting an LED strip light to the mains: what to check

Check the wire gauge, the presence of an accessible terminal block and the space available inside the profile to house the connectors. A well-designed terminal block screws down without forcing and lets two profiles be linked in a chain.

220V strip light or rechargeable model: which one for which room?

For a hallway or a garage, mains is the obvious choice: no recharging to keep an eye on. For a cupboard with no power supply, a battery model remains the only option. Compare the two families in all LED strip lights, and find the other lighting solutions in the full lighting range.

Which motion sensor LED strip light for each room?

The height of the room and the light you expect decide first. In a garage, you want a crisp, even light on the floor and the workbench; in a hallway, a soft light that switches off quickly. Humidity then separates the models.

Which sensor strip light for which room
Room or use Light sought What decides the choice Point to watch
Garage Crisp and even on the floor Length covering the traffic area Sensor hidden by a vehicle
Workshop Even above the bench Position as close as possible to the workstation Reflections on metal surfaces
Hallway and stairs Soft as you pass, quick switch-off Sensor aimed towards the walkway Delay set too short
Cellar and pantry Functional, without glare Model suited to damp air Condensation on the profile
Bathroom Clear around the mirror Protection rating suited to splashes Steam and splashes
Sheltered outdoor Threshold or terrace light Mounting and protection against damp Temperature variations

Sensor LED strip lights for garage and workshop

In both rooms, the garage LED strip light is mounted on the ceiling, along the line of movement, and the workshop LED strip light sits closer to the bench so you do not work in your own shadow. Find the dedicated models in lighting a garage and in strips designed for the workshop.

Hallway, cellar, pantry: the ceiling LED light that switches on by itself

In a traffic area, look for a ceiling LED light with no direct glare: your eyes are at head height, not on the floor. For wet rooms, see the bathroom LED lighting.

Which length, colour temperature and IP rating should I choose?

LED strip length is worked out by the linear run to cover, not by the floor area of the room: it lights the zone where you work or walk. The LED strip colour temperature sets the mood, from warm white to cool white. The IP protection rating is chosen according to humidity and splashes. This collection brings together 212 references.

The criteria for a 220V sensor LED strip light
Criterion What it changes in use Where to read it
Profile length The area actually lit Product page, in centimetres
Colour temperature The mood: warm, neutral or cool white Product page, in kelvins
Protection rating Resistance to humidity and dust IP mention on the product page
Sensor type How movement is detected Product description
Delay and threshold How long it stays on and when it triggers at night Instructions and product settings
Power supply Direct connection, no battery Voltage shown on the product page

Warm white, neutral white or cool white: which light for a garage strip?

Around 2700 to 3000 K, warm white suits a hallway or a pantry. Around 4000 K, neutral white stays comfortable in an entrance. Above 5000 K, cool white gives a crisp light appreciated in a garage or workshop, provided it is not installed right above your eyes.

IP20, IP44, IP65: what the protection rating really allows

IP20 indicates a luminaire reserved for dry rooms. IP44 withstands splashes, which is enough near a washbasin. The IP65 protection rating opens up use in very damp rooms and under a shelter. To compare, browse the waterproof versions.

How do I install and set a motion sensor LED strip light?

Installing a motion sensor LED strip light starts with orientation: the sensor must see the walkway, with no shelf in front of it and no heating vent nearby. Fix the profile to the ceiling or as a surface mount, aim it at the floor where people walk, then set the delay so the light stays on for the whole journey. A test at night confirms the whole setup.

Setting the sensor delay and sensitivity

The delay sets how long the light stays on after the last movement: too short, and you walk on in the dark; too long, and the light stays on for nothing. The brightness threshold decides the level of darkness from which the sensor allows the light to switch on. Set the motion sensor using the dial provided for this purpose, then test it.

Why does the strip light switch on with no one passing?

The sensor reacts to moving heat: draughts, animals, direct sunlight on the cell or a radiator are enough to trigger it. Lower the brightness threshold and clear whatever is blocking it. Discover the other models in the motion sensor LED strips.

Which is the best LED strip light?

No model is best everywhere: the right strip is the one whose length, light, protection rating and sensor match the room. Ask four questions before choosing an LED strip light: what use, what humidity, what linear run, what mood. The quality of the terminal block and the finish of the profile matter as much as the figures on the product page.

Mistakes to avoid before buying a sensor strip light

Undersizing the length to the point of leaving an area in shadow, ignoring the protection rating in a damp room, blocking the sensor with a shelf, forgetting to set the delay: four mistakes that spoil the experience. Note also that a bare profile withstands neither condensation nor splashes.

LED strip light or cuttable LED tape: how to choose

A cuttable LED tape is cut at the marks printed on the strip and adjusts to the centimetre, but needs a separate sensor and a dedicated power supply. The strip light integrates everything in its profile. Compare the two approaches in the LED strip light family and, to broaden the view, in our lighting catalogue.

Waterproof sensor LED strip light: for the bathroom and outdoors?

In a bathroom or outside, humidity is what governs. A waterproof LED strip light withstands splashes and condensation, which a bare profile cannot. Check the protection rating on the product page and, if the luminaire stays exposed to rain, go for a model designed to stay outside.

Installing a sensor strip light in a bathroom

Keep the luminaire away from directly wet areas, near the shower or the bath, and choose a closed profile. See the humidity-resistant strips for wet rooms.

Outdoor strips: what waterproofing changes

A sheltered outdoor spot is fine with a model protected against splashes; an exposed facade needs higher protection, because direct rain and dust add to the humidity. Browse the outdoor strips and the waterproof outdoor models.

How to equip a traffic area without getting it wrong

Measure the linear run to be lit before ordering, then check the humidity of the room and the possible orientation of the sensor. A longer profile mounted along the line of movement often gives a more comfortable result than two small points of light. Once you have these three pieces of information, the product page is enough to decide between two references.

Secure payment, tracked delivery, returns and Designix customer service: you order with peace of mind and can contact us if any doubt remains about choosing the profile.

Frequently asked questions about 220V sensor LED strip lights

Does a motion sensor LED strip light need a battery?

No, a model designed for the mains connects directly to 220V: no battery, no recharging. That is what sets it apart from rechargeable strips, which fix without wiring but need recharging and are poorly suited to a busy hallway.

Cuttable LED tape: how does it work?

It is cut at the marks printed at regular intervals on the strip; beyond them, the next section no longer lights. Cutting is done with the power off, then a suitable connector is fitted. The maximum length powered from one side depends on the model and is shown on the product page.

Can a motion sensor LED strip light be installed in a bathroom?

Yes, provided you choose a protection rating suited to humidity and splashes. A profile reserved for dry rooms is not suitable near a shower or a washbasin. Check the IP mention on the product page and keep the luminaire away from directly wet areas.

Does the sensor also work during the day?

On most models, a brightness setting decides the level of darkness from which the sensor allows the light to switch on. Set low, the luminaire stays off during the day despite people passing. Set this threshold using the dial on the product, then test it in real conditions.

Why does my sensor strip light switch on with no one passing?

The sensor detects moving heat: a heating vent, a draught, an animal or sunlight on the cell can trigger it. Check the orientation, clear whatever is blocking it and lower the brightness threshold to avoid switching on in broad daylight.
