IP65 ceiling lights install where an indoor fixture cannot go: above a shower, under an awning, on a facade or in an exposed entrance. They combine dust tightness and resistance to water jets, which settles both the wet room question and the outdoor one. In a bathroom, the NF C 15-100 standard defines zones 0, 1, 2 and 3 and requires a protection rating suited to each; outdoors, the NF EN 60598 standard governs luminaires and the IP65 rating corresponds to protection against dust and water jets under IEC 60529.

What is an IP65 ceiling light and where can it be installed?

An IP65 ceiling light is a luminaire that is dust tight and resistant to water jets: these two protections come from the two digits of the rating. It is intended for wet rooms such as bathrooms and for sheltered or exposed outdoor areas: entrance, covered terrace, under an awning, facade wall.

What exactly does IP65 mean?

The first digit, 6, indicates that dust does not enter the luminaire. The second, 5, indicates that it withstands directed water jets without letting water in. A standard indoor model rated IP20 offers neither of these two protections.

IP65 luminaire for bathroom or outdoor: where to place it?

Bathroom, entrance, covered terrace, awning, facade: these locations receive splashes or lasting humidity. The selection mixes IP65 and IP20 references, so check the protection line on the product page before ordering. Three models carry IP65 here. The Naevora outdoor ceiling light is a white rectangular unit with five black optics. The Dorevia round ceiling light, in grey aluminium with a 270 mm diameter, goes up to 20 W. The Glorienne black ceiling light aligns five LED modules over 157 mm. For dry rooms, our lighting catalogue covers the rest of the house.

IP20 and IP65: what changes for a ceiling light
Rating First digit Second digit Locations In the collection
IP20 Protection against solid objects No protection against water Living room, bedroom, hallway, office Indoor models
IP65 Dust tight Resistance to water jets Bathroom, entrance, covered terrace, awning, facade Naevora, Dorevia, Glorienne

Are IP65 lights watertight?

Yes, with one nuance that avoids disappointment: watertight against splashes and water jets, not submersible. An IP65 ceiling light withstands rain and shower splashes, but must never stay under water. In a bathroom as on a facade, this is the level to aim for near a water point.

Difference between IP44 and IP65

IP44 protects against solid objects and water splashes, which is enough in a wet room kept away from the shower. IP65 shuts out dust and resists strong water jets. Between the two, it is therefore the amount of water received that decides, not the size of the luminaire. Indoor models can be found in the modern style LED ceiling lights.

Is the IP65 rating enough in heavy rain?

Yes for steady rain and lateral splashes, that is exactly what the second digit covers. No for immersion: a luminaire placed on a ledge that holds water is no longer within the conditions intended by the rating. So start from the actual run-off of the location before choosing.

Which IP rating for a bathroom ceiling light?

In a bathroom, the requirement depends on proximity to the water point: the more the zone receives splashes, the higher the rating must be. An IP65 ceiling light is suitable near a shower or bathtub and in a very humid room; outside water zones, a standard LED ceiling light is enough.

IP65 bathroom spots: how to pair them with a ceiling light?

The spot lights a precise area, for example the vanity top, while the ceiling light illuminates the room from the ceiling. Let them coexist by keeping the same light temperature, otherwise a yellow patch sits next to a white zone. Compare shades in our bathroom lighting.

Does a humid bathroom need IP65?

Not everywhere. Near the shower and in a poorly ventilated room, IP65 durably protects the electronics and the finish. Elsewhere, an indoor LED ceiling light does the job, and you can choose it more freely for style. See the white ceiling lights for a light ceiling.

Which outdoor lighting to choose and which IP rating for outdoors?

For a luminaire exposed to rain, IP65 is the watertightness level to choose: it resists water jets and dust. Even under an awning or a covered terrace, this level protects the luminaire over time, where an indoor model would eventually oxidise.

Which IP rating for an outdoor luminaire?

Directly exposed to rain, on a facade or gable, aim for IP65. Under a deep awning, IP65 remains the safe choice, because wind drives water even under the shelter. A model only protected against splashes is suitable only in a closed, dry volume.

Outdoor lighting: warm white or neutral white?

Warm white, between 2700 and 3500 K, gives a welcoming entrance and matches the indoor light visible through the door. Neutral white, between 3500 and 4500 K, lights a passage, awning or garage more sharply. In the selection, Naevora is 12 W and Dorevia 20 W: two power levels for two surfaces.

Round, rectangular or five optics: which format of watertight ceiling light to choose?

The round format diffuses widely and suits an entrance, a pillar or a small terrace. The rectangular format, with five optics or five aligned LED modules, spreads the light along a facade or awning and covers a wider area. The choice is therefore made first according to the surface to be lit.

Round or rectangular: which format for which surface?

A 270 mm round like Dorevia lights a compact volume, entrance or landing. A rectangle 157 mm long like Naevora or Glorienne stretches the beam along a wall, which limits dark zones on a wide facade. Check the actual length before drilling.

Which ceiling light for a small entrance?

A compact format, mounted on the ceiling above the door or on the side wall. A single well-placed light point is enough for three to four square metres. For indoors, hallways and passages gather formats suited to these circulation areas, and LED ceiling lights for kitchens meet the same need for clear light.

Aluminium, white, black or grey: which material and colour to choose?

Aluminium, a material found in a large part of the selection, holds up well to humidity and temperature swings. White blends into light facades and bathroom ceilings, black marks a dark facade, grey matches aluminium joinery. The colour is chosen together with the wall that receives the luminaire.

White or black IP65 ceiling light: which to choose?

White disappears on a light render and on a painted ceiling, which leaves only the light visible. Black draws a clean silhouette on a dark facade or anthracite joinery. If you hesitate, compare the white and black models and the black finishes side by side.

Why favour aluminium outdoors?

Aluminium is light, does not rust like bare steel and draws heat away from the electronics. On a facade, it withstands alternating rain and frost better than an ordinary material. The black metal ceiling lights show this material in a dark finish.

Which power and light temperature for an IP65 ceiling light?

The selection offers 12 W and 20 W in LED. Warm white, between 2700 and 3500 K, warms an entrance or a house facade; neutral white, between 3500 and 4500 K, gives a whiter light for an awning or a passage. Dimming concerns only certain models.

12 W or 20 W: which power for an outdoor ceiling light?

12 W is enough for an entrance, a sheltered hallway or a landing: Naevora and Glorienne are at this power. 20 W covers a wider area, a deep awning or a facade with several crossing points, like Dorevia. Power is chosen with the surface, not with the wish for strong light.

Warm white or neutral white?

Warm white creates a welcoming mood and matches the indoor lamps seen from outside. Neutral white suits circulation areas and surroundings you want sharp. Indoors, dimmable ceiling lights let you adjust the light in the evening.

How to install and maintain an IP65 ceiling light?

Installation is surface-mounted, on the ceiling or wall, on an existing cable outlet: bracket screwed to a stable base, connection according to the instructions, seal closed again before powering up. For maintenance, a soft cloth is enough; abrasive products damage the seal that provides watertightness.

How to install an IP65 ceiling light on the ceiling or wall?

Cut the power at the circuit breaker, identify the wires, screw the bracket to a solid base rather than hollow plasterboard, then fix the luminaire body. Check that the seal is in place and not pinched before restoring power. The connection follows the model's instructions, with no adaptation.

How to maintain a watertight outdoor luminaire?

Wipe the diffuser with a soft cloth or a non-abrasive sponge. Harsh detergents and scouring sponges attack the seal and the finish. After cleaning, check that the seal has not moved: it is what keeps water out.

Which IP65 ceiling light to choose by room and budget?

First choose the use: entrance, sheltered hallway or bathroom, then the surface to cover, then the colour in keeping with the wall. The warranty runs from 3 to 5 years depending on the model, and the order includes secure payment, tracked delivery, returns and Designix customer service.

Compact models or larger rooms: which to choose?

A compact 12 W format for a front door or a landing; a 270 mm round in 20 W for a terrace or a wider awning. If you are equipping the whole house, mix the sources: pieces with a crafted design indoors, watertight models outside, and the Nordic spirit for understated volumes.

What is included when ordering from Designix

Secure payment, tracked delivery, returns and Designix customer service. Each piece has its own constraints: bedroom ceiling lights and modern living room ceiling lights are chosen on light temperature, not on the watertightness rating. Check the protection and the dimension on the product page, then order. To explore other families, the full lighting catalogue gathers the available collections.

Frequently asked questions about IP65 ceiling lights

Can an IP65 light be used outdoors?

Yes. IP65 combines dust tightness and resistance to water jets, which covers a facade, an awning or a covered terrace. Check the rating on the model's product page before installing it outside: not all references in the shop are watertight.

What is the most efficient outdoor lighting?

A watertight IP65 LED luminaire uses little power for the light it gives and ages more slowly than an unprotected model. Format matters just as much: a round one for an entrance, a rectangular one with several light points for a facade or a wide awning.

Can an IP65 luminaire be installed where water stagnates?

No. IP65 resists water jets, not immersion. A luminaire placed in a hollow that holds water, on a roof edge or in a permanent puddle is no longer within the intended conditions. Choose a location where water runs off.

Is an IP65 ceiling light suitable in a very humid bathroom?

Yes, that is its territory: near the shower, above a bathtub or in a poorly ventilated room, the watertightness protects the electronics and the finish. The rest of the room can take a standard indoor model, provided it stays away from splashes.

How can you tell if a model is really IP65?

The rating appears in the product specifications. On this page, three watertight references stand out: Naevora, Dorevia and Glorienne. Also check the material, dimension and power before confirming the basket.
