Choose steel pendant lights using two simple markers: the socket type and the number of light points, matched to the length of the table or island you need to light. A single light above a round table, two to five aligned on a bar for a long table, all in IP20, so reserved for dry rooms.
What light does a steel pendant give?
A steel pendant casts light downwards, above a table, an island or the centre of the living room. Depending on the model, it uses opal globes that soften the flow, amber globes that warm it, or adjustable LED modules that concentrate it. Most light in warm white.
A material that structures the room
Steel and metal give fine, rigid lines: a circle, a tube, a horizontal bar. The colour does nothing to the sturdiness or the amount of light. The most common shades range from black to white, via silver and grey, with a few transparent variations when the structure combines with glass. The whole remains visually light on the ceiling. To place these models among our full range of lighting, compare the silhouette first, then the finish.
Light that comes from the ceiling
An opal globe diffuses widely and avoids glaring points. An amber globe filters the light and warms the atmosphere. An LED ring or disc lights frankly downwards, which suits above a worktop. The vast majority of references run on LED in warm white, around 2700 to 3500 K, a range that stays comfortable in the evening. Modern LED pendants make the most of this downward direction.
Where to install a steel pendant in the home?
The living room and dining room are where steel pendant lights most often find their place, ahead of the open kitchen, the bedroom and then the hallway. Above a dining table or an island, they light a precise area without taking the place of general lighting.
In the living room and above the table
Above a table, the pendant lights the surface and the faces without glaring. A multi-globe model spreads the light and limits shadow areas: the Mirora pendant is one example, with an adjustable cable from 30 to 350 cm and a 60 cm diameter, handy under a high ceiling. For a living room without a central table, a wide ring placed in the centre of the room works better than a small format.
In an open kitchen, above the island
Over an island, the light must fall straight onto the worktop. A bar of several aligned modules does this job: the four-disc Lorissa line drops to 122 cm maximum and adjusts to the height of the worktop. Island and worktop lighting relies on this type of configuration rather than a single wide fixture.
| Room | What the pendant lights | Common configuration | What to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Living room | The centre of the room, without glaring | Several globes or a wide ring | Adjustable height and opal glass |
| Dining room | The dining table | Two to five lights aligned on a bar | Height once the table is in place |
| Open kitchen | The island and the worktop | A line of discs or cones | Socket and output per light point |
| Bedroom | The sleeping corner, in low light | Compact format, long cable | Warm white colour temperature |
| Hallway | The corridor, in downward light | Small diameter, a single light | Footprint in the walkway |
Measure the length of your table or island, then open the model page to check the diameter and the cable adjustment range: that is what decides between two similar formats.
Black, silver or brushed steel pendant: which finish to choose?
Matte black blends into the decor and lets the light dominate, silver and brushed steel bring discreet reflections, white fades into the ceiling. The choice depends above all on the contrast you want and the shades already present in the room, not on the strength of the material.
Black steel pendant and contrast
On a light wall, a black structure draws a clean line and goes almost unnoticed on the ceiling. It is the most common shade, and it matches dark wood as well as white. Black metal pendants cover both the amber globe and the small E14 socket light.
Stainless steel, brushed steel and other finishes
Brushed steel keeps a technical look and soft reflections, stainless is brighter, white goes unnoticed. When the structure combines steel and glass, the metal finish and the glass shade answer each other: the gold bar and its opal globes Tavish play on this contrast. Contemporary white finishes suit low ceilings.
| Finish | Associated materials | Effect in the room | Models concerned |
|---|---|---|---|
| Black | Steel and metal | Strong contrast, discreet fixture on the ceiling | Prym, Chromara, Ianthe, Lustra, Orbesa |
| Silver or brushed | Steel, metal, stainless | Discreet reflections, technical look | Pivéa, Annularia, Conéris, Mirora |
| White | Metal and glass | Fades into the ceiling, soft light | Linnea, Tavish |
| Amber and opal | Glass and metal | Filtered light, warm atmosphere | Pernille, Ianthe, Lustra |
Which socket to choose between E14, E27, G9, GU10 and integrated LED?
The socket determines the bulb and the effect: E14 for fine, numerous lights, E27 for a wide choice of bulbs, G9 for small opal globes, GU10 for directed lighting, integrated LED for a flat format with no bulb to choose. Check this point before buying.
E14 and E27, the sockets you replace
A screw socket leaves the bulb in your hands: you can change the colour temperature later, switch from warm white to a more neutral white, or replace a burnt-out bulb without tools. Fine, numerous lights are made in E14, like the three globes of Ianthe. The large E27 socket accepts more shapes and wattages, which simplifies assembly.
G9, GU10 and integrated LED, the other solutions
The G9 clips in and concerns small globes placed close together, on structures like Prym and its five opal globes. The GU10 sends light in a precise direction, useful on a worktop, with the four cylinders of Chromara. Integrated LED provides a flat module, with no bulb to choose.
| Socket | Bulb type | What it changes | Models concerned |
|---|---|---|---|
| E14 | Small screw socket | Fine, numerous lights, replaceable bulb | Tavish, Lustra, Pernille, Ianthe, Orbesa |
| E27 | Large screw socket | Wide choice of bulbs, simple assembly | Mirora, Linnea, Alvéo, Velluto |
| G9 | Clip-in pin | Small opal globes placed close together | Prym |
| GU10 | Bayonet spotlight | Directed lighting on a worktop | Chromara |
| Integrated LED | Module included | Flat format, no bulb to choose | Pivéa, Lorissa, Annularia, Conéris |
How many light points for a table or an island?
A single light is enough for a small round table, while two to five lights aligned on a bar light a long table or an island. Multi-point models spread the light and limit shadow areas between guests, provided you keep regular spacing.
A single light or several on a bar
Under a low ceiling, a single large disc takes up less space than a cluster of small globes. The large brushed disc Annularia lights a wide area in one piece. Conversely, a bar with several modules, like the five dimmable cones Conéris, drops to 140 cm and adjusts to follow the length of the worktop.
Spreading light over a large table
At a table of six to eight people, the gap between two lights matters more than their number: light placed too close together leaves the ends in shadow. The nine amber globes of Lustra cover a long bar in one go, in warm filtered light. If you prefer to play with heights, offset the cables slightly: the light drops closer to the plates without getting in the way of conversation.
At what height should a pendant hang above a table?
The height is set once the table is in place: the bottom of the fixture must stay above the line of sight of seated people and not get in the way of conversation. Adjustable cables make this adjustment easier, especially under a high ceiling or above a kitchen island.
Above a table or an island
Install the furniture first, then lower the fixture until you can see the table lit without glare. Over an island, the same logic applies with extra clearance above the worktop, so you do not bump your head while cooking. Nordic-inspired pendants often rely on a long cable and a light silhouette, easy to shorten at the time of installation.
In a corridor or a hallway
In a walkway, the pendant goes higher, out of the walking line, and in a small diameter. Check the floor footprint before fixing the hanging point: a wide disc in a narrow corridor becomes a nuisance. LED pieces with a strong design act here as a visual marker, without lighting the whole passage.
Industrial, minimalist or contemporary steel pendant: which style to choose?
The industrial style shows off visible structures and exposed bulbs, the minimalist sticks to fine lines and simple shapes, the contemporary combines steel, glass and LED modules. The right choice is the one that picks up a material already present in the room: black metal, light wood, glass.
Industrial steel pendant and workshop spirit
A structure that shows its cables, bars and bulbs embraces the workshop spirit. This style matches raw wood, concrete or metal furniture, with no extra accessories. Workshop spirit and exposed metal rely on this honesty, often in black or silver.
Fine lines, Nordic and minimalist spirit
The minimalist sticks to round shapes, balls and tubes: little material, plenty of light. The black rings and light wood of Alvéo illustrate this balance between metal and warm material. When glass enters the composition, it adds relief without weighing it down: see the worked glass pendants. Note the dominant colour of the room before deciding.
Dimmer, IP20, warranty: what to check before buying
Check three points: dimmer compatibility if you want to adjust the intensity, the IP20 rating that reserves these pendants for dry rooms, and the warranty period. The adjustable cable does the rest. Galvanised steel suspensions ensure sturdiness and precise adjustment.
Dimmer and colour temperature
Part of the selection accepts a dimmer, which lets you lower the intensity in the evening without changing bulbs. For these models, compare the dimmer-compatible models and look at the stated range, around 2700 to 3500 K in warm white. The IP20 rating applies to all the pendants shown here: they stay in dry rooms, living room, dining room, kitchen, bedroom or hallway. For a warmer atmosphere, amber globes and dark glass filter the light at the source.
Caring for a steel pendant
A soft cloth is enough on steel and metal, without abrasive products. For glass, a mild cleaner and a quick wipe avoid marks. Switch off the power at the breaker before any work, and take the opportunity to tighten the fixing points. If the room is very dusty, grey pendants and white and black models forgive everyday marks more easily.

Frequently asked questions about steel pendant lights
Which steel pendant should I choose for a living room?
Favour a model whose light points cover the area to be lit: a wide ring or a bar with several globes above a coffee table, a more compact format elsewhere. Adjustable height often matters more than diameter, because it lets you adjust the fixture once installed.
Does a black steel pendant darken the room?
No: the colour of the fixture does not change the amount of light, only the contrast. Matte black steel goes almost unnoticed on the ceiling and lets the light show, provided you choose opal globes or an LED module whose flow goes down into the room.
Are there stainless steel pendant lights?
Yes, a few models in the selection show a stainless steel finish, with a silver look and discreet reflections. These versions are recognisable by their surface, brighter than steel painted black, and by their frequent pairing with clear or opal glass globes.
At what height should a pendant hang above a dining table?
Set the height once the table is in place: the bottom of the fixture must stay above the line of sight of seated people and not get in the way of conversation. Pendants with adjustable cable make this adjustment easier, especially under a high ceiling or above an island.
Which bulb should I put in a steel pendant?
It all depends on the socket of the model: E14 for small lights, E27 for a wide choice of bulbs, G9 for opal globes, GU10 for directed lighting. Some models have integrated LED and accept no bulb: check the socket before buying.
