Washing Temperature For Sheets

Did you know that most of the electricity used by washing machines goes toward heating the water for the wash? This is why it is now recommended to wash in cold water or reduce the washing temperature. But how do you choose the ideal program to reduce energy consumption while still eliminating bacteria? At what temperature should you wash your sheets?

Nowadays, many laundry detergent manufacturers offer active products that can be used at lower temperatures, often starting from 20°C (68°F). It is recommended to check the manufacturer's instructions and product labels to determine the optimal washing temperature. Washing at a low temperature offers the advantage of reducing energy consumption while preserving fabric fibers and colors. However, for stubborn stains, hot water is more effective, although some materials can be damaged by heat. It is therefore essential to refer to the care instructions on the labels of your linens. In general, cotton can be washed at 60°C (140°F), linen between 40°C and 60°C (104°F and 140°F), while silk should not exceed 30°C (86°F) to avoid damaging the fibers.

How often should you wash your sheets?

Now that you know at what temperature to wash your sheets, let's talk about the washing frequency. Did you know that the human body releases about 100 liters of sweat into sheets every year? Without regular washing, your bedding can become a breeding ground for dirt, microbes, and bacteria. So, how often should you change your sheets? It is recommended to wash them every 7 to 10 days, or at most every two weeks if you wear pajamas and shower before going to bed. During periods of intense heat, it is advisable to wash them more often. Waiting too long between washes can promote the proliferation of bacteria and dust mites, which can aggravate respiratory problems and allergies.

What about drying sheets?

Once your sheets are perfectly clean, you need to dry them. You have two options: open air or a tumble dryer. In sunny weather, drying outside is ideal because the sun helps eliminate bacteria and dust mites while making the linens whiter.

If you use a tumble dryer, choose the right program to avoid damaging your sheets. Always check the label on your sheets, as some materials are not suitable for tumble drying. Furthermore, an excessively high temperature can break the fibers of your laundry.

Regardless of your drying method, do not leave your laundry in the dryer for too long, as this can compress the fibers and cause many wrinkles that are difficult to remove during ironing.
