Lighting ideas for the WC: what kind of lighting for your toilet?
This article is also available in French: Idée luminaire WC

Poorly lit toilets appear smaller, colder, and less well-maintained than the rest of the home. Yet, it is the room where we think least about lighting.
The right choice relies on three reference points: the room's volume, the presence or absence of a water point, and the desired ambiance. Once these factors are established, choosing a model becomes simple, and our selection of toilet lights is designed to be browsed through this framework.
What lighting should you choose for a toilet?
For standard toilets, a surface-mounted ceiling light or recessed spotlights are enough to illuminate a small volume evenly. A wall light adds soft lighting at eye level. A pendant remains an option with high ceilings, provided you clear enough headroom. The base, GU10 or E27, determines the bulb.
The format is decided first by volume. In under 2 m², a compact ceiling light or wall light avoids cluttering an already low ceiling. As soon as the height allows it, a pendant dresses up the space without overloading it.
- Surface-mounted ceiling light: simple installation, distributed light, the safe bet.
- Recessed spotlights: discreet, perfect under a false ceiling.
- Wall light: warm light, ideal as a supplement.
- Pendant: decorative, reserved for high ceilings.
Each item in the selection is commented on by buyers, a useful benchmark when you cannot judge the light in person; feedback is visible on our Google profile.

What Ingress Protection (IP) rating for a toilet light?
In dry toilets, without a hand basin or shower, an IP20 rating is sufficient. Near a water point, aim for IP44, capable of resisting splashes. Based on an audit of 217 items in our catalog as of September 12, 2026, 86% have an IP20 rating and 76% are LED: the majority of toilets therefore do not require anything more.
Which toilet light matches your layout?
The IP rating consists of two digits. The first notes protection against solid objects, the second against water. IP20 protects against contact but not humidity; IP44 handles splashes from a nearby hand basin.
Color temperature is just as important as power. A warm white around 2700 K warms up the room, while a neutral white illuminates without yellowing surfaces. To decide, our guide on white or yellow light details each case.
Before confirming a model, a quick review avoids unpleasant surprises: room layout, appropriate rating, compatible base, desired tone.

How to visually enlarge a small toilet with light?
Multiply sources rather than using a single central point: distributed light erases corners and pushes back the walls. Aim a beam toward the ceiling to make it appear higher, focus on light-colored surfaces that reflect light, and eliminate dark areas that crush the volume.
Indirect lighting, placed high up, eliminates the corridor feeling. A wall light directed upward washes the wall with light and gains a few visual inches.
Without a window, artificial light becomes the only source: ensure its uniformity to avoid shadows. Our tips for lighting a room without a ceiling light apply well to windowless toilets.
How to make a toilet cozy with lighting?
Lower the intensity and warm up the tone. A warm light around 2700 K, softened by a wall light or lampshade, changes the whole atmosphere. Add a low source rather than a single harsh ceiling light, and prioritize a soft output that flatters the textures and colors of the walls.
A wall light carries this warmth better than a direct ceiling light. Placed at eye level, it diffuses an enveloping glow. Our wall lights for toilets cover compact formats adapted to these small volumes.
A dual-level approach works well: functional light for clarity, accent light for ambiance. A dimmer, when the light allows it, makes it possible to switch between the two.
Tiling sometimes complicates installation. There are solutions for installing a wall light without drilling, practical when you don't want to damage a wall.
