How to create a gallery wall: a step-by-step guide
Gallery wall with frames of varying sizes and abstract art

A gallery wall is one of the most personal ways to decorate an interior. Family photos, illustrations, posters, watercolors: every frame tells a piece of your story. Here is how to create your own without a misstep.

Step 1: choose a theme or a common thread

A successful gallery wall is not a random patchwork. There is always a link between the elements: a common color palette, a recurring photographic style, a theme (travel, nature, abstract). This common thread creates coherence within diversity.

You can also play with frame unity. Frames that are all identical in natural oak give an orderly look, even with very different contents. Mismatched frames in black, white, and wood create a more relaxed vibe.

Step 2: plan the layout

Before driving a single nail, arrange all your frames on the floor in the desired configuration. Take a photo. Adjust. Shift them around. When you are happy with the result on the floor, trace the layout onto kraft paper or newspaper and tape it to the wall. This will allow you to visualize the final result and identify the anchor points.

The ideal spacing between frames is 5 to 8 cm. If they are too close, the frames blend into each other. If they are too far apart, they lose their group effect.

Step 3: mix formats

The key to a dynamic gallery wall is variety in formats. Combine large formats (50x70 cm) with medium ones (30x40 cm) and small ones (20x20 cm). Integrate a round mirror or a small shelf to break up the repetition.

Start by placing the largest piece slightly off-center. Build around it by filling the spaces with smaller formats. The result will appear spontaneous while being perfectly calculated.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many frames for a gallery wall?

At least 5 for a group effect. Beyond 15, you risk overcrowding. For a 2-meter-wide wall, 7 to 12 frames offer a good balance.

How to hang without damaging the wall?

Command adhesive strips support up to 7 kg and remove without a trace. For heavy frames, screws with anchors remain more secure.

At what height should a gallery wall be centered?

The center of the composition should be at eye level, i.e., about 155-165 cm from the floor. Above a sofa, leave 15-20 cm between the backrest and the lowest frame.
