Setting Up a Desk Area in the Bedroom

Having a desk area in a bedroom is essential, especially for children or teenagers, but it can also be useful in an adult's bedroom. Whether for daily use, occasional tasks, or for remote work, creating a workspace in a bedroom is a great idea. Here are a few tips to optimize this space.

Small desk area for a small bedroom

When children grow up and start school, it becomes necessary to provide a small desk for their homework. Since children's bedrooms are sometimes small, you often have to be clever to fit a desk in. A compact model, preferably with drawers or storage space, is ideal. A corner desk is perfect for small spaces.

Don't forget to choose a desk chair adapted to the child's size, adjustable in height to keep up with their growth. For storage, wall shelves with wooden or metal boxes can be very practical.

Good to know: multifunctional desks

In a restricted space, whether it’s a child's or adult's bedroom, the desk can have several uses. For example, it can serve as a vanity table with a mirror, a nightstand near the bed, or a console table at the entrance of the bedroom.

Another option is to use a loft bed, with a workspace underneath. This type of layout, often used for children's bedrooms, can also be suitable for a master bedroom with a mezzanine. Good lighting under the bed is essential; accent lamps, string lights, or LED strips can provide a soft glow.

Separating the work area from the rest area

To set up a desk area in a bedroom while keeping the workspace separate from the sleeping area, you can play with colors. Painting one wall a different shade or decorating it with wallpaper helps define the office space. If you prefer the desk area to remain discreet, opt for neutral furniture in the same tones as the walls or the bed.

If the bedroom is large enough, you can install a large console against a wall, with drawers, thus providing a long workspace. You can also fix a sturdy board or a nice solid wood worktop onto legs or storage units.

Desk with a view or tucked into a corner of the room

In houses, bedrooms are often located upstairs, under the eaves. Taking advantage of the spaces under the roof to install a desk is often a good idea, especially under a skylight to benefit from natural light.

Placing the desk in front of a window is ideal for letting the imagination run free. Working while admiring the scenery boosts creativity and increases productivity. If the windows are low, or if it is a French door or a floor-to-ceiling window, it is better to place the desk slightly set back so as not to hinder opening. If space permits, install your worktop in the window recess, especially if the walls are thick: this saves space.

Similarly, if the bedroom has a niche or an alcove, it is the perfect place to install a desk with floor-to-ceiling shelves. You can even conceal this office corner with a heavy curtain that will also add a cozy touch.

If all the walls are already occupied, you can set up the desk area at the foot of the bed. Choose a discreet piece of furniture that blends into the decor, complemented by a rug and a comfortable armchair, which is different from a standard desk chair.
