Baby's Room: Our Tips for Gender-Neutral Decor

Preparing for baby's arrival and it’s time to decorate their nursery? If you don’t know if it’s a boy or a girl, opt for gender-neutral decor. Even if you do know the sex, gender-neutral decor is versatile and simpler.

Timeless white for a gender-neutral nursery

White is ideal for a baby nursery that suits either a boy or a girl. It makes it easy to change the decor as they grow. Avoid stark white, which is too bright for baby's delicate eyes, especially with a lot of natural light. Opt for an off-white or a slightly tinted white.

To avoid a "total white" look, choose furniture in white wood and add items and accessories in natural wood: frames, animal figurines, lighting… Wood brings a warmth that softens the white. If you have hardwood floors, that’s even better.

Take your used furniture to a collection point for recycling or reuse!

Play with materials and textures to brighten up white: wool, faux fur, fleece, sheer curtains.

A nursery with warm, natural tones

Shades of brown are interesting for gender-neutral decor. From beige to terracotta, to cream and greige, these colors create a cozy atmosphere, perfect for a baby. If you like vintage style, opt for a wicker crib, a wardrobe with cane doors, or velvet cushions.

Install a natural wood baby bed, with an ochre or beige canopy. For feeding or reading a story, add a comfortable wicker armchair with a cozy cushion. Lay down a round wool rug that contrasts with the floor while remaining harmonious.

To keep in the nature spirit, opt for wicker or rope toy baskets. Add a touch of water green, a neutral and soothing color, with the bedding for example.

Gender-neutral, colorful baby nursery

If you don't like white and neutral colors, opt for more colorful gender-neutral decor. Two rules: avoid red, orange, and yellow in the sleeping area; do not combine more than three colors.

For example, choose a general vibe in gray and white, then add a pop of bright yellow with cushions, an armchair, a rug, or the changing table pad. Another duo that works well: almond green, a soothing color, with midnight blue, dark gray, or white.

If you prefer pastels, you can mix them or use different shades of the same color: light and navy blue, pearl and anthracite gray, straw and bright yellow. Choose a colored accent wall, echoed by touches: rug, shelf, plush toys, cushions… Pastels go well with light wood or white furniture.

A gender-neutral nursery can be decorated without being monotonous. Moreover, you will easily be able to adapt the decor as they grow.
