A Mirror in the Bedroom: Good for Sleep?

Mirrors are very popular as decoration elements. In addition to allowing you to see yourself, they are often used simply as decorative objects. However, they are not welcome in every room! Our furniture experts advise against placing a mirror in the bedroom... unless you find a very strategic location for it. In this article, we will explain why and how to integrate a mirror into the bedroom without disturbing the ambiance.

Avoiding mirrors in the bedroom: where does this theory come from and what are the effects?

If you like Westwing, you have surely already read our articles on Feng Shui! Feng Shui is an ancient Chinese concept that aims to create perfect harmony between a person and their interior. According to this theory, the placement of furniture and decoration directly influences good vibes and positivity. It is therefore essential to arrange the elements in each room of the house well to draw positive or negative influences from them.

But what are the effects of mirrors in a room? First, mirrors visually enlarge the room. According to Feng Shui, the larger a room is, the more energy it should have. A mirror therefore increases the size of the room and the energy that reigns there. That is the first problem... The bedroom is intended for relaxation and sleep. Too much energy in a room is just as disadvantageous as too little energy. The energy increased by the presence of a mirror makes it harder to rest and disrupts sleep, making it less restorative.

In addition, there is the negative influence of the metal on the back of the mirror. Metal acts as an antenna for the electrical, electromagnetic, and magnetic fields created by household appliances. Regardless of the power of these appliances, the metal of the mirror can intensify and redirect these fields, increasing exposure to radiation in the bedroom. According to Feng Shui, this stress affects the quality of sleep, causing problems falling or staying asleep.

If you want a mirror in your bedroom, there are several ways to place it without harming the room's atmosphere. To avoid annoying reflections, place the mirror so that it does not reflect directly onto your bed. Avoid putting it next to or opposite the bed. Hanging a mirror above the bed is also not recommended. It is better to hang or install a large mirror so that you cannot see it from the bed.

For wardrobes with mirrors on the doors, you can attach the mirrors to the inside of the doors. But this trick only works for wardrobes with hinged doors.

Our alternatives to mirrors

For many, a mirror is essential for visually enlarging the room. You can achieve this effect in your bedroom using other methods.

For example, by using light wall paint: white, light gray, and beige visually enlarge, making the room welcoming and bright. Dark colors, on the contrary, visually shrink the bedroom. For a beautiful harmony, combine dark-colored accessories with light surfaces.

Our alternatives to mirrors

To continue using mirrors as a stylistic element, opt for mirrors with decorative frames to make people forget their main function. They bring a new effect to the room and act as modern furniture elements.

If you do not want to go without mirrors in your bedroom, choose foldable mirrors that you can use when needed and hide after use.
