The two-pin base is standard; everything else is chosen according to use and available space.

What is a 12V G4 LED bulb and how do you recognise it?

A G4 bulb is recognisable by its two thin pins set into a small holder, with no screw thread or bayonet. It only works at 12 V, behind the transformer housed in the fitting or in the ceiling void. Before ordering, remove the old bulb and compare it side by side with the new one.

Two thin pins, no screw thread

The G4 base is not screwed in: the two pins push into the holder, like a plug into a socket. The pin spacing is standardised, but their length and the shape of the body are not. This freedom explains why one G4 bulb fits a spotlight while another jams in the one next to it. Also check the orientation of the holder: on some fittings, the bulb sits at an angle.

What changes compared with a G4 halogen

The fitting, the holder and the transformer stay in place; only the bulb changes. An LED gives off less heat, which matters in a closed cabinet or under a display case, and it uses less power for comparable brightness. The existing transformer therefore runs at a lower load, a point to check before replacing everything. To see where the G4 sits among other bases, compare with the catalogue of bulbs by base, then return to the low-voltage range as a whole.

Where should you install a 12V G4 bulb in the home?

The G4 is used in fittings where the light point must stay small and precise: recessed spotlights, under-cabinet lighting, compact wall lights, display cases, terrace fittings. It is chosen to highlight a worktop or an object, not to light a whole room. The constraint is not the base but the space around the holder and the fitting's sealing.

Detail lighting: worktop, cabinet, display case

Under a kitchen cabinet, a line of small light points avoids the shadow cast by your hand on the chopping board. In a display case, a bulb placed close to the object deepens the relief and brings out the material. A bedside or hallway wall light plays the same role more discreetly. In all three cases, LED is preferable to halogen: less heat in a closed volume. Before ordering, measure the fitting's cavity, the height available under the glass and the shape of the holder's pins."}},{"@type":"Question","name":"What resistance for an LED at 12V?","acceptedAnswer":{"@type":"Answer","text":"No resistor is to be added inside a fitting: the G4 LED bulb is powered by a transformer or a 12 V driver that already regulates the current. A resistor is only used for assembling bare LED components. Check instead that the transformer delivers 12 V and handles the load."}},{"@type":"Question","name":"Can a G4 bulb be put in a ceiling light or a chandelier?","acceptedAnswer":{"@type":"Answer","text":"Only if the fitting has a G4 holder and a 12 V transformer. Most ceiling lights and chandeliers are wired at 230 V with an E27 or E14 screw base, and many recent models have a built-in LED that cannot be replaced. Check the base before buying."}},{"@type":"Question","name":"How does a cuttable LED strip work?","acceptedAnswer":{"@type":"Answer","text":"The strip has cut marks: cut only at these marks, otherwise some of the LEDs stop lighting. The sections are then connected with a suitable connector or power cable. Like the G4 bulb, the strip runs on low voltage and depends on a transformer."}},{"@type":"Question","name":"Can an LED wall light take a G4 bulb?","acceptedAnswer":{"@type":"Answer","text":"It depends on the model: a wall light with a G4 holder and a 12 V transformer accepts these bulbs, an integrated-LED wall light does not. For a living room, check above all the base stated on the data sheet, the ingress protection rating if the wall light is near water, and the space available around the holder."}},{"@type":"Question","name":"What is the difference between a 12V G4 LED bulb and a 220V bulb?","acceptedAnswer":{"@type":"Answer","text":"A 12V G4 bulb connects behind a low-voltage transformer, whereas a 220V bulb connects directly to the mains, with a screw or bayonet base. A G4 bulb cannot be fitted to a GU10, E27 or E14 holder: the base must match the fitting in place."}},{"@type":"Question","name":"My G4 LED bulb does not light up or flickers: what should I check?","acceptedAnswer":{"@type":"Answer","text":"First check the power at the consumer unit, then the condition of the pins and that they are properly inserted in the holder. If the bulb flickers or stays dim, the transformer is often the cause: too low a load, an incompatible model or a transformer at the end of its life. Test an identical bulb on another point."}}]}]}

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0677/8598/2228/collections/designix-entete-ampoules-led-12v-g4-v1.jpg?v=1792910374
